Hi OpenTable, our Fargo, ND, HoDo, reservation was a VERY bad experience. My wife and I made a reservation on your app, we were super excited to go, we dressed up, we arrived, and the doors were locked. A sign stated the restaurant was closed for a private party. Why would you even accept our reservation???
We had the corner booth and our waiter was so attentive.
Overall great experience, was worried after reading other reviews about slow service and disappointing food. However, our server was awesome, she was attentive and cheery especially given she was one of only two servers that we could see working. The restaurant isn’t too large and it wasn’t super busy on a Saturday night surprisingly. Food tasted delicious, we ordered from the sandwich and burger section of the menu which was quite reasonably priced. The dinner entrees on the menu however were on the pricey side, which I feel wasn’t warranted as the restaurant presentation and atmosphere just didn’t exude fine dining, staff and customers were all casually dressed, I felt overdressed in my blazer and dark jeans ensemble. Great restaurant for a nice date or business meeting for sure.
Great service all around. Nice atmosphere, food excellent
My only complaint is I could taste the lighter fluid/propane/whatever fuel they use in the torch for the brûléed Parmesan mashed potatoes. It reminded me of the smell of branding cattle from when I was young which is a bit off putting. I pushed the Brûlée aside and then it was delicious, as was the rest of our meal. Please fix your brûlée torch!
Service was slow this time around; about 30 minutes until order was taken, appetizer long to arrive and received about 5 minutes before main course. First time service has been slow in our experience, steak was not quite medium well-more pink than usual.
I booked online but because it was very cold (January) the restaurant was closed but the full menu was being offered in the lounge. The food was outstanding but the ambience was lacking because we had to eat in the lounge. It was nice but not the same as eating in their beautiful restaurant.
We were finishing up a 5 day trip; 3 days in Minneapolis and 2 days in Fargo and enjoyed 4 other dining events before this. All were very nice but both my wife and I agreed, this was the best. In Minneapolis we stayed at the Hewing Hotel in the warehouse district. This is a very trending district and we had access to many "high end" restaurants and did enjoy 3 excellent dinners; Tullibee, JD Hoyt's and Monte Carlo. In Fargo we also dined at Vinyl Taco, which was more of a fast food restaurant.
I definitely recommend this restaurant (lounge).
New Year’s Eve
We have stayed at this hotel, frequented the rooftop bar and lower lounge and decided to try the restaurant for New Year’s Eve. The service was barely minimal and mostly because I believe they were way understaffed, however it affected our evening and dinner. The food portions were small to say the least for the prices that were being charged. We were at a table in the centre that had huge drafts from the windows and very awkward seating for conversation.
Needless to say, food, service and ambience all on a poor level equates to a less than stellar New Years.
We went here for NYE. I’ve been going to the HoDo for New Years three years in a row. This year they overbooked, and put us in the lounge. I made a reservation in plenty of time. Instead of a quiet, intimate meal with friends, it was noisy as the band did a sound check and cold with the front door opening all the time. The food and drink is always good and so was our server, but if it wasn’t NYE, we would have left to dine elsewhere. In years past, the lounge handed out champagne. We didn’t receive any and our drinks were late. So I went to grab a champagne, when I was yelled at by another patron claiming that it was his. He already had a glass in his hand. for our consistent patronage and money we spend, I expected better. We will not be returning for NYE next year.
It was a slow night the service was ok. When we walked in there was no one to greet us the booth tables were uncomfortable. The table base was large and uncomfortable to sit at. The food menu didn’t look great for the prices, we got a drink an appetizer and left. The live keyboardist was a little distracting and loud. Overall it wasn’t a bad place just not what we were looking for that night
Fantastic service and wonderful food.
We made a return trip here, when the HoDo Restaurant accepted our OpenTable reservation. Unfortunately, the restaurant was hosting an event and was not actually serving on the day we went. Instead they shunted us to the HoDo lounge, which was much too noisy for a business dinner. They should never have been accepting reservations if they were not going to have tables available in the restaurant itself.
The food was slow to come out. When our shared bread appetizer was brought to us (by a staff member other than the wait staff member who took the order) we had no small plates, and no silverware to use the butter / pate / chutneys that were part of the appetizer. It took over 5 minutes for anybody to stop by or otherwise be able to be caught to ask for plates and silverware. The bread plate itself was good, but not good enough to excuse the poor service.
Main food orders were fine, but not great. This was quite different from our first visit about 18 months ago (the last time we visited Fargo). I'm sad to say, there's no way I would return to this place, because our first impression was good. Our local hosts indicated the decline in reputation and service had been noticed by others. Too bad.
I chose the restaurant so we could visit......We were all coming from different parts of the country. It was quiet so we could converse easily. Most of the food was very good....My walleye was too charred and very small. Otherwise it was great. We had a very enjoyable evening.
Six of us for dinner on a Friday night. Not busy. Appetizers were great. Dinner was good. My Salmon was a little over cooked but taste was good. Dessert was good. Great service.
Our food , though plentiful, was bland and without character, a fact that I'm certain the chef could easily have rectified if our server, whose name I unfortunately don't know, had bothered to ask how our a la cart salads were, or how our entrees were, or how our desserts were. Regrettably, he did none of those things so that overall, HoDo was a culinarily unimpressive, though moderately expensive, dining experience where we were treated more like a nuisance than welcome guests. We will not return.
My wife and I went to the HoDo for our anniversary supper on a Friday night. The place was not very busy and was quiet. Drink selection was great. I had the bison burger and fries and it was very good. My wife had the fish sandwich and fries and the sandwich was heavily breaded with more breading than fish. The service was great but the food was good, not great.
Excellent Ecperience & Amazing Menu!
Looking Forward to our next visit!
Nice place with very good foods and beer and very pleasant waitresses
The food was fabulous. Since there was only one waitress the service was a little slow. However she was very helpful and friendly. Missed linens on the tables.
Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere and excellent service!!
Ok. I will probably go else
Great burger and pineapple cider.
Nice swanky restaurant and lounge. The service was excellent.
Our waitress was really good, but when me and my girlfriend got there we sat at a table in the lounge and a different waitress come up to us and said “arms up kiddos I haven’t cleaned this table yet” I’m almost 28 years old and have full grown beard and I am a veteran of the Iraq war, I am not a kiddo and she looked at least three years younger than me, so that really annoyed me. Other than that the waitress who actually waited on us was really nice and did a good job, hodo is a really nice restaurant with great food.
Disappointed that 20% gratuity was put automatically onto the check. I went to the restroom, left my 81 year old my with my credit card and $20 for a tip. I think the server should have said the gratuity is already included. She got a $34 tip on a $70 bill. It was a buffet.
I have been coming here for many years. All my food was cold except a few pieces of bacon. It tasted great but was all cold no warmth at all.
We went to HoDo for the Mother's Day Buffet. It was $30.00 per person (which we were aware of before making the reservation) and did NOT include coffee. We had to pay another $3.50 per person for everyone that wanted coffee. The omelet bar took so long that myself and others in our party abandoned getting eggs and opted for French Toast - which was cold. The set up of the buffet is awkward and contributed to the issues with the omelet bar. I had heard such good things about the "HoDo" buffet that I was excited to finally try it to celebrate both Mother's Day and my son's college graduation. Wow what a disappointment!! Will not be going back.
We had a reservation at 6pm to give us time for an 8pm show. This very rude, sourpuss girl seated us in the ugly restaurant side where we waited 30 minutes for a cocktail. They said they were busy because of multiple events in town...so then staff up. Anyway, 30 minutes for a cocktail later, we ordered the hummus plate and a veggie sandwich - not super complicated. By the time we left we had only gotten the hummus and had to cancel the rest of our order (this is now 7:35pm). An hour and a half for a drink and hummus. Our final bill consisted of the items that we did NOT get. Overall, just terrible service and no one had the decency to acknowledge it and just kept smiling at us - we've all worked in restaurants, admit when it's crazy and do what you can to make it right. We heard good things from friends about this place but there is no way I will ever go back there.
Our server was fantastic, but we had to wait a long time for our food. We were one of two tables in the restaurant on a Friday night, which felt odd. The salmon dish i had was good, but it was overcooked and dry. I enjoyed the vibe in the dining room, but we should have had our food served ratherly quickly as it was extremely slow for a prime dining night. This place made it seem like it would have provided a top notch experience, but our outing was really only saved by our very friendly, knowledgable, and accommodating server. This restaurant is very lucky to have her! It seems like the kitchen could use some help.....I will only go back to this place if i hear their kitchen is stepping up or a change in management.
Would not recommend. Went excited about the tasting menu, but left instantly as it was listed as "fine dining" and the server looked like she worked at a truck stop; wearing tattered jeans, and a dirty white tee shirt. The atmosphere was awful, and there was only two other tables there. Tables were chipped and did not look clean. From outside looked beautiful, inside up close was different. Decided it was not worth even attempting, so left to a better restaurant. Do not waste your time going here.
Food is average overall...very very salty home cut fries...which is a shame because the looked nice. Homemade ice cream was very icy too, not smooth. Pasta was very over cooked...almost mushy.
This isn't the first time we've been to the HoDo, and every time we seem to have one problem or another. The most frequent issue is the slow service, especially for drinks. The lounge is usually busy and the bartenders either can't keep up or they preferentially service the bar over the restaurant. In any case waiting 20 minutes to get your first drink after being seated isn't acceptable. We ordered an appetizer (lavosh) that was very good, but that came out before our drinks. I ordered the salmon and was very disappointed. It was thin, dry, and overcooked. The accompaniments were delicious, but the salmon was bad. My wife had sirloin braciola, and it was good, but not excellent. One expects better from a fine dining establishment, especially since you are paying fine dining prices. It's too bad the HoDo can't get it together in the restaurant. It has a premiere location and nice ambience.
They sat us in the bar at a high top with bar stools even though I had made a reservation for the restaurant weeks in advance. There was a band loudly setting up and testing equipment. It was very cold. The food was terrible. One of the worst restaurant experiences I have had. Not fine dining. Not even close to worth the prices they charge.
Went for Valentine’s Day, had a very nice evening.
Food was good, service was great, but our table was close to the door so a frigid breeze would hit us every time someone came in the door. I could see probably 4 or 5 other tables that we’re dealing with the same thing.
Everything was spot on. I would recommend to anyone looking for good food in a pleasant atmosphere.
We go there anytime we are in Fargo. Service can be slow if you arrive prior to 5pm, so we just order a charcuterie board to munch on before our meal arrives.
Beautiful restaurant that was recommended to us by several. It was a quiet evening...not many guests that night...however, it took a very long time for our food and when it arrived it was cold. My husband's meal was delicious despite it being cold but mine was somewhat bland. He had the flank steak and I had the ragu fettucini. We stayed at the hotel, which was fun and loved the art. Plan to give the restaurant another try due to the positive feedback of friends who ate there at other times.
Such a lovely evening! The food was great and the service excellent. I certainly couldn't ask for anything more. :)
