We went for a night out with friends, without children. The location is lovely and the staff was very attentive. The food was fine, but I'm not sure it was worth $100 a person including drinks and tip. I had the octopus appetizer, which was mostly couscous and hardly any octopus. My husband had the kale salad which he said was very good. Two of us had the short ribs and the other two had the steak frites. The steak was very good, and the short ribs were ok. I might give it another try, but not anytime soon. There are better places in the area.
Nice venue with good service, but unfortunately food is basically inedible. Went there w my husband, uncle, and mother. Ordered steak, burger, and salmon. Steak was like rubber. Burger was raw. And salmon was terrible, so bad that my 91 year old uncle who never complains actually says it was bad. My husband had ordered an Asian salmon burger which he also said was terrible. The desserts were also disappointing. The cheesecake had a refrigerated taste. This used to be a place w great food. What happened? Very disappointed. I did not complain as it was my birthday celebration and was just trying to get through the meal but will admit i regret going here, and so does my mom.
The historic Hohokus Inn is beautiful and cozy inside . Service and food were outstanding. My only disappointment was that when I asked for the Crystal room I was shown to a table for two outside the main room. The main room where the big crystal chandelier is was set up for tables for 4 or more. I pointed out that nobody was there yet, but was given the reason that it is ON LY for 4 or more seating at a table. We made a 5:30 reservation and NOBODY was even dining yet! When we left, about 1 1/2 hours later, only 2 other tables had been seated. Everything was perfect...except for that.....and it was date night for us.
Great place and service was excellent. Oysters and Apps were great. Entry and deserts were just ok. My table of 4 all had the same option. Short ribs were dry as was the brisket. I have th scallops which were great.
Desert was disappointing. The chocolate lava cake was fake! I was a little surprise to see that with the prices. Service was excellent. I would question going back though so don’t that kind of money in just “ok” food.
We enjoy Mondays at the Inn when it is possible to bring our own wine. The Inn is usually very quiet on Mondays and service is superb and food especially carefully prepared. It is possible to have a leisurely meal with friends and not feel rushed at all. We enjoyed a variety of oysters, a lobster pasta dish and the gently poached salmon (the special) this week.
Stopped in for lunch on a random Thursday afternoon in order to take advantage of their outdoor seating area because it was an absolutely gorgeous day out.
There's a parking lot for the restaurant and then there's plenty of street parking within a block of it as well.
The outdoor area is great and it's very cozy. The parking lot is right next to it, but they do a decent job of keeping it separated by some greenery. There's approximately 11 or 12 tables outside so being seated, especially during lunch should not be an issue. We had to wait for approximately 5 minutes, so it wasn't bad at all.
This was our first time here and we were very impressed with their offerings.
We started with a kale salad which we had split between the two of us. The portion was more than enough to accommodate the two of us. I then had the NY strip sandwich, which was absolutely fantastic and full of flavor. My wife had the half share of scallops with beans, broccoli rabe and chorizo, which was also very good. We added in a couple glasses of wine and our meal was complete. They have a decent wine menu by the glass.
The prices were fair and comparable to everything around us. Service was efficient and effective.
Overall, we had a great time and really liked the food and the atmosphere in which it was served. We shall return for dinner since I did not get to see the inside this time and the food was more than good enough to return.
Food was very good. Waitress was a complete ditz. Got our drink order wrong. The offered to take away the proper drinks after we started them. Have gone there in the past and service was fine. I just think it was this one waitress but she obviously was not trained.
Dinning in the comfortable setting is a delight. The atmosphere created by the the staff is top shelf, you and your guests are the center of their attention. From the wine to cocktails, appetizers to main course, desert and coffees, the presentation, selection and quality is spot on. Looking forward to my next visit to the inn
The food was terrible! It was not fresh and had zero taste. We were embarrassed because we picked the place. Buffet for brunch is nothing to rave about either. It's such a shame because it's a beautiful place but will never return. Save your money!
Service was outstanding. We booked last minute and in order to get an immediate seat we sat in the library room with the bar. Very nice time. Food was great! Have been back to the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn 4 times in the past two months.
Mixed experience. My steak frittes was excellent. Crab cake appetizer was tasty and well presented but tiny for $18! My wife ordered lobster pappardelle at the suggestion of the server, but she did not care for it (too spicy). The server graciously offered something else so she picked the salmon. After a while it was fine finally served, but the salmon was raw on the inside. They took it back.
When we were first seated it was quiet and kinda romantic, which is what I was going for. Later on, though a large family was seated with an infant and two preschoolers. They were well behaved but LOUD! Ruined the mood.
Manager was very visible and tried his best to help. Highest marks for service - a classy place. But it will be a while before we consider returning.
My husband and I had wonderful meals from appetizers through dessert. We were nervous having read reviews about poor service; however, our server was very nice and attentive. The pace is relaxed, which we didn't mind because we enjoyed the food and atmosphere. We will be back!
I'm from NJ but have lived in NYC and LA for the last fifteen years. Very pleasantly surprised by Saddle River Inn in past visits so decided to try HHK Inn this time. While the place itself is as beautiful or moreso than SRI, the food and service just don't compare. No points for inventiveness. No points for execution. No points for service. All in all a good meal but definitely not a great meal.
The waiter gave us the menus and we figured out what the four of us wanted to order. Only after he returned to take our order did he tell us that the entrees that 3 out of 4 of us wanted were not available, nor were the oysters that 2 out of 4 of us wanted. Back to the menu to pick new options. We asked a few questions about some of the dishes, in particular the beef short rib, and his responses took a lot of liberties in describing what we actually ended up getting. Not sure if the waiter was new but he didnt seem to know anything about the food menu, same goes for the wine list.
Have not been for years; between the (astonishing) $$ rating and the dearth of 1930 tables, gave it a try for a quiet date. Surpassed expectations. Las time around I lucked into an upstairs table in an alcove, almost private; this time I drew a table in the corner of a larger dining room on the ground floor. Still had a cozy, quiet feel. And the food rivals preparations at twice the price. I need to go here more often.
Shrimp skillet appetizer with delicious garlic base and Tuscan kale salad worth a try.
Halibut crepe over white beans and greens was good and satisfying. Scallop entree over broccoli rabe and beans prepared well with scallops a bit smaller than usual.
Banana cake dessert with like ice cream easily shared and nice. Enjoyable evening.
I have been to this restaurant before and this was the worst meal that I have had at this restaurant. The Ceasar salad had virtually no dressing on it. The lettuce was not crisp and I don't believe that the cheese had been freshly grated. I have had better salads come out of a bag.
I had the lobster pappardelle. No where on the menu does it mention that a half portion was available. I assumed this when the check came and it indicated that it was a full portion. I would have ordered a half portion if that had been option since I took at least half home with me. In terms of how the pappardelle was prepared, the pasta stuck together which leads me believe that not enough sauce was put on or not enough oil was put on after it was cooked so the the pasta was separated as opposed to clumped together.
My friend had the duck and that was excellent.
However, two out of three is not good - especially for the amount of money that it cost.
The night we ate here there was a 75th bday party . The restaurant was not prepared to deal with that party and the rest of the diners. We (just 2 of us) waited a long time to get menus, our drinks, and so on. Our server was lovely, but overly stressed. The food was mediocre. I was excited that my favorite tuna dish, Ahi Poke, was on the specials menu. But it was nothing special at all. Just tuna with a sauce breadcrumbs and avacado on top. Not true marinated poke. Was our first time there. Not rushing back anytime soon.
Ho Ho Kus Inn never disappoints . It is lovely ambience, food is excellent, service is accommodating and lovely. It is a good setting for either a couples night out or a small dinner with friends. It is not overly loud - so the ability to have a conversation is strong. It also offers numerous options for private party settings as it is set in a historic house - which offers numerous of dinning rooms of varying sizes.
The chef should be fired. Each dish compromised the integrity of wonderful ingredients by masking them in overpowering sauces and toppings. The grilled octopus appetizer would have been delicious if it were not topped with an abundance of siracha nor sitting atop a bed of over- seasoned curry couscous. While I was excited to try the lobster pappardelle especially since the server informed me that they were just hand-made, I have never experienced ANYTHING like what was served. Rather than having the pappardelle and lobster shine in this dish, a tomato sauce that tasted more like pure tomato paste dominated. The dish was covered in it, so much so that I was unable to identify if I was eating pappardelle, lobster or a whole pearl onion. It wouldn't have mattered anyway as everything on my plate tasted like bottled tomato paste. It was inedible. The frites were so overcooked and hard that you couldn't bite through them. To make matters worse, they were covered in mounds of parmesan. The arugula salad was also inedible as it was drowned in dressing. The manager (who was very nice and professional) apologized and offered us complementary dessert to which we politely declined. He comped us a meal and appreciated the feedback.
