HIX Oyster and Fish House
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.
A lovely meal In a beautiful location. Wine was also of a good if slightly pricey standard
As always, we had a marvellous time at Hix, Lyme Regis. We were there to celebrate my mother's birthday, and the staff treated her like a princess, which made the day so special for her. The food was excellent, and the service and attitude of the manager and his staff were exemplary. Thank you so much. Stephen FC
Had oysters and Lyme Bay prawns as starters. The frying of the prawn shells afterwards was a nice surprise and very tasty. The brill on the bone was excellent and the accompanying greens, salad and chips were very good as was the hake and mussels. Felt very well looked after by the staff.
Excellent service, lovely venue disappointing main course
Fine setting and nice quirky ambience. Food has definitely gone downhill this year. Minuscule John Dory fillets that were also tough. Whisky and marmalade ice-cream was sweet but to our taste had neither whisky or marmalade in it. The red wine listed (£35) was not the domaine brought to the table. When challenged the correct one was brought! Service overall was pretty good but all the staff seemed new and were not as attentive as their predecessors had been on our several visits. We’ll probably recommend that friends give it a go as we may have been unlucky. If it goes wrong again it will be our last visit especially when the Harbour Inn has got its act together on quality service and price.
Perfect for my girlfriends birthday. Fish was cooked beautifully and the service was knowledgeable and professional yet relaxed. Definitely recommend
It doesn't know what it wants to be.
High prices. Laminated menus, kids in football shirts.
Having to ask for side plates.
I have been over 4 times this year, twice in the last two months, I am struggling to justify the extreme pricing against the totally relaxed and no special feeling.
Perhaps another chain gone BAD.
A lovely warm place on a cold wet lunchtime, and a warm welcome with wonderful views. My fish pie was good but not outstanding in any way but the apple pudding was excellent. My only gripe was when the bill came it had the 'discretionary' tip already added which we were happy to pay as the service was good but as we split the bill we were 46p short, but still left a 10% tip (because it was just easier for us all to pay £45 each not £45.11!!!) They then came back to our table to ask for the 46p!! Unbelievable and unnecessary and very confusing for my ageing parents. I think the waitress should be aware that a tip is optional and not compulsory.
Started well with a nice table for two overlooking The Cobb - but all downhill after that. Two glasses of wine purporting to be NZ Sauvignon brought to the table - origin doubtful. Breadboard not attractive nor tasty. The Atlantic Prawn Cocktail was just about OK but overpriced for what it was. The Smoked Salmon slices were tasty and enjoyed. The choice of Mains was disappointing - no Halibut, no Turbot, no Dover nor Lemon Sole - just Brill, John Dory and another 'on the bone'. We chose the alternative of a Medley of 3 Mixed Grilled Fish - BIG mistake. Overcooked, dried out, and little more than skin and bones - £55.00
Service (for which a discretionary 10% was added to the bill) was amateurish in the extreme and alleviated only by the pleasant personality of our waitress. The Maitre d' picked up on our dissatisfaction and kindly offered complimentary sweets and coffee. Just didn't feel like a top notch fish restaurant.
Eat a many fish restaurants - I would say cooking at hix was average
and not a vegetable available with main course? Disappointed!
Staff were excellent.
Fantastic food, Beautiful venue with a great ambiance. Well worth a visit. Not the cheapest. A special of the the day would be a nice of option to add ?? Overall outstanding. Would definitely recommend.
Excellent food and location. The staff are knowledgable and the food is exceptional. Somewhere we plan on returning to. From the welcome to the departure we felt like the only people in there due to the care and attention we received, although it was busy!
Simply put , Hix oyster and fish house failed to meet our expectations.
Restaurant with a view - worth a visit just for that reason. The food is great & generous portions. Will definitely return when next in Lyme.
Welcoming and efficient staff. Excellent food choices. The restaurant is in a fantastic location with wonderful views! Highly recommended. Can’t wait to visit again!
Really excellent food and service. Delicious Lyme Bay prawns with mayonnaise, very fresh oysters and perfect ricotta, cherry and honey crunch pudding. The only let down was that the tables are set parallel to the view so inevitably half those at the table face away from the view and look at the back of the restaurant. Perhaps they could all be swung 90degrees so that everyone gets to see the sea? It must be one of the best sea views in England...
We visited this lovely restaurant in 2017 and it is still as good. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. A minor issue was that we got a bit chilly towards the end of our meal and so moved tables.
I was worried after reading other reviews but we had a lovely evening with great service. The food is pricey but was all delicious.
The mackerel was very good, the views are exceptional. As we have just moved to the area, this restaurant is the first on my list to come back to.
Always love to eat here ..the views...the exceptional attentive staff..the food!
Absolutely beautiful food served here with a location to match!
Fabulous Food, drink, and atmosphere. A highlight of our calendar is a trip to Hix. Everything you touch, taste or drink is beautifully selected and the staff are an utter delight, even when we were running 20 minutes late. After Oysters, shrimp, fish and chips, burrow hill brandy truffles, we then set off for a delightful "let the food go down" wander around the cobb. An utterly wonderful way to spend a blustery Saturday evening.
Lovely views over Lyme as it’s in a great location! Starters and fish was delicious. Just a little disappointed with my fish pie as tasted no different than mine I make at home. It said Lyme Bay fish pie but had mostly Salmon in it.
Absolutely amazing even though it was raining outside the food and service were fantastic loved it
Best fish I've ever tasted in the UK! Having eaten what is the best fish in the world in Matosinhos, Portugal, I never thought I would ever find a fish resturant in the UK to come close, however tucked away in Lyme Regis there is one!
Service atrocious, food very disappointing, very uninspiring
Overpriced and underwhelming. Without the location it would be nothing. Everything designed to squeeze as much money out of the customer as possible. Mediocre at best.
Great views and nice friendly staff.
Wine was nice and oysters lovely.
Really enjoyed my apple pie and the fish delicious.
Everything about our lunch was very good indeed. The service was friendly, professional and unintrusive. The food was outstanding and the time between courses was just right. We have visited several times in the past both on our own and with guests who were equally enthusiastic. We will definitely be visiting again as we live locally.
The restaurant has a great view overlooking the harbour, and is magical at night. The service was really excellent - friendly, cheerful and swift but discreet. The food was fine but not particularly distinguished. In a restaurant where the name and the price carry expectations, the food was fine but certainly not outstanding and really didn't justify the cost. Perhaps we suffered from end of season weariness!
The food was good and the value ok. Our fish pies were not overly special but they were tasty enough. I particularly loved the oat soda bread and my porter stout was lovely, one of the best I've had. All in we had a nice evening with lovely views over Lyme Cobb.
Having read some negative reviews I was rather concerned about booking a table but as it was my sisters birthday I wanted to go somewhere special and thought that some reviewers were being too harsh. I found the menu very limited and somewhat simplistic but opted for grilled fish and my sister had the hakes head - which was unusual but sounded interesting. My fish was boney and small and underwhelming and the hake was not as interesting as hoped. We ordered sides of veg (very expensive) and were given some sort of potato dish which was a tiny portion and pretty tasteless we were also presented with cold, wet greens also very small. However, my fish soup stater was very good as was my sister's pasta starter and the oysters were good, at £2.95 each I guess they should be!!. So in all it was a VERY disappointing meal and SO expensive and miniscule. To top it all when we were asked if we would like a dessert- the very one we wanted was unavailable! So this turned out to be a very expensive evening with extremely mediocre food. Of course neither of us wanted to complain (and I normally do) as it was a birthday treat and didn't want to spoil the evening by complaining. Come on Mr Hix surely you should address the complaints your diners are posting and create a wow menu with wonderful fish dishes.
Absolutely delicious meal. So enjoyable, service and food/wine are first class.
The food was fine. Our visit was let down by slow and unengaged service. It took way too long after we were seated to take our drinks order.
Delicous food (though prawns a bit tasteless and such a fiddle!). Very kind and helpful gentleman serving us.
Late table not great as most people finishing and leaving so no ambience at all.
This was my 4th or 5th visit and the food has always been just ok for me. I was quite excited when I clicked on the link in the email to say I was definitely coming to see that the menu had changed quite a lot since we'd last been. But it wasn't a current menu, although it didn't say sample, and it was all pretty much the same as ever. Fish pie, fish & chips, a curry, grilled fish. I love the restaurant and the staff are always brilliant but there's nicer food for me in Lyme.
I don't think the food is particularly special given the prices. The wine is very nice but hugely expensive .
It needs a bit more of a speciality other than fish curry, fish and chips, smoked salmon and prawn cocktail.
We have been visiting Hix in Lyme for a few years now but this visit something had changed. The food wasn’t quite up to the standard previously had. Hopefully this was because it was end on lunch and out of season and this will of changed the next time we go.
Excellent quality and presentation of food, good selection of drinks, a lovely setting above the shore, clean and well managed with good attention to detail.
