Hiro 88 - Old Market Ratings and Reviews
It was a business meeting and the sound level was high, we asked for a private table and they seated us in middle of room, the hostess just the menu down and walked away when I asked for a private table was not her problem.
No more business meeting for me at Downtown Hiro
I had a group of friends out after work for a birthday happy hour on Tuesday 11/21. The hostess was very rude when I asked for another chair for our table. She told me they had more reservations and couldn’t seat us until we knew EXACTLY how many people were in our party. After we sat down, she spoke very poorly of the group to the girl who was pouring water in Spanish. Um. I know Spanish. I don’t appreciate calling me and my friends names. And, we were there for several hours and there was never a point when the tables around us were full so I’m not so sure why there was a huge issue with one extra chair as we were providing more business than expected. Other than the hostess, the service was awesome.
We were all in town to go see a theater show.
My mom and sister and I try to go to Hiro occasionally when we can get to Omaha. We try new sushi rolls every time and are never disappointed. Although our favorites include the cornhusker roll and the Las Vegas roll. (May not really be sushi, but delicious nonetheless)
After arriving to our reservation we sat for 20 minutes wondering why everyone was getting service and we weren't. Later i found out our server walked out. Thankfully richard picked up our table and gave us GREAT service. He really did make us forget about the incident earlier! Thanks richard!!!! :-)
I don't know that I would necessarily recommend Hiro 88 in the Old Market. My friend and I were sat, and we had to go back up to the host stand in order to have a server come to our table. Additionally, there was a blue 'floater' found in my Mango Orange Mojito that did not belong there. When our appetizers came out, we had no silverware or napkins to eat them and had to go in and get them ourselves. Finally, when our sushi came, we were not given soy sauce dishes, so I again had to go inside and ask for them. Average food, below average experience for the money...kind of a nightmare service wise to be honest.
We used to enjoy, but this visit was like a different restaurant. Our table was dirty. There was food on floor under our table and around the several near us (no one was dining at these tables). I almost went to ask for a vacuum because I wanted to enjoy the experience. The waitress was kind, but clearly not trained as in the past. We miss the old experiences we had with Hiro, and Imperial Palace prior to that. I hope they get back.
Hiro 88 was a nice little place to go especially since I have a gluten allergy. Their gluten-free options are clearly marked on the menu and the waitress was very accommodating on finding out if certain things were gluten-free if they weren't marked. I had the imperial chicken and it was excellent. The chicken satay didn't have as much flavor as I thought it was. But overall it was a good first experience there.
I made my reservation easily online for 7:30 on a Saturday night with 45 minutes before, which made us very happy. When we walked in I noticed the decor was lovely and the staff was very nice. What I didn't like is that they seat you right next to a filled table when there are plenty of empty ones. I noticed they did that for every couple that walked in. For date night, it made it less romantic and I didn't like how I could hear the other's conversation and vice versa. However, our waitress was very knowledgeable and kind and made our experience better. As for the food and drinks; the cocktails we had were very delicious. But, we both ordered sesame chicken and the chicken was super dry and to be honest Hy-Vee would have been A LOT better. I probably won't go back for awhile and will stick with a small business Chinese restaurant or Hy-Vee.
Mixed drink called princess was very tasty! I would definitely order it again. Food was above average, very good variety. The tables are a little small to hold all the small plates, glasses, menus, etc. Overall a very good experience. I would go back again.
