Always good and innovative. Patio is great and atmosphere perfect. Only criticism is maybe less bread in some of the appetizers. It’s hard not to eat bread when it comes w dish.
We have booked Hinoki several times for corporate dinners over the years and I have always got rave reviews back from my diners. For participants, they love love love the food -- Everything is good!!! For me, they are extremely easy to work with and book space. Given the volume of robocalls these days, I'm finding that NO one answers their phone any more so it's difficult determining cost and/or availability when I'm trying to schedule something. Hinoki makes it possible to do everything on line, with no deposit required. That they are also within walking distance of Century City is an added bonus.
Great food and location.
If you read recent reviews you'll see a lot of complaints about the service. Our meal was great and the service throughout was actually good too... We wondered what the fuss was all about. People say its because they include automatic 20% gratuity, I don't know. We booked the table through OpenTable, and it happened to be our anniversary so I checked that box with no expectations. At the end of the meal, we passed on dessert, and after a long wait were surprised with a little ice cream/fruit dessert with a candle... a nice touch. I paid the bill, the waitress went off to do something, and as I was signing the check I noticed a charged line item for "Bday Dessert" or something to that effect. I waited for a bit but didn't see anybody and was just annoyed and wanted to leave. I circled the charge and wrote "Ha, nice" next to it. I went to the bathroom on the way out, and was stopped as I was leaving with one of the more awkward experiences I've had at a restaurant. Another server asked if there was an issue. I asked what he meant, and he said he cleared the table and noticed the bill. He asked if he could give me coupons for a free dessert next time. I said no thanks, and he asked If he could adjust the bill. At this point I was in a rush, and I'm said whatever. He said ok, well I am going to..... which he never did. So long story short, the service DOES suck, and its a bummer because the meal was otherwise really nice albeit pricey. And for that price the service shouldn't suck.
If you're looking for reasonably healthy food, interestingly and well prepared, in a lovely, relaxing setting (outdoors in the back) try it. I did and I've been back several times since.
So good. Return visit is a must
We celebrated my wife’s birthday. We love this place and the service/ food is always great.
Great ambiance and noise level. Food was okay.
Very pretty patio area, but very limited menu. We all ordered the bass, which was good. Side dishes mediocre.
Good, imaginative food in a nice setting with incredibly poor and slow service, even on a quiet night. Also, I will refuse to patronize restaurant who charge a compulsory 20% tip for a dinner of 2 people. ESPECIALLY when the service sucks. Never again.
Food is great it came way too fast
always a great vibe and tasty, but the service is uneven at best...feels like servers are running around with no purpose...my second drink came after the check, never a good sign...and with a guaranteed 18% gratuity it kinda makes you wonder if the staff has any reason to try...
Food was sub par. Previous meals have been better. This was a very off night. Some dishes were inedible. Felt rushed by the server on an evening where there were tons of tables available
Heard great things and wasn’t disappointed - perfect location for my meeting and customer. Group of 4 and the noise level was perfect, could have the discussion we needed and then relax and enjoy. Will definitely be back!
Service and taste got lost at this restaurant. It used to be a lot better establishment.
food was horrible. service was terrible! this was our 6th time at this restaurant and our last. it was one of our favs... now it’s off of our list!
The food is still very good. It was excellent in the past but still very good. That’s the only positive thing I can say other than the 1996 Marsannay that was recommended by the Somm was delicious after the original red Burgundy we ordered had changed vintages which I think the somm was hoping we would simply be happy with but a 2013 is not the same as the 2012 we ordered. These were the highlights. The BAD is really bad. Our server was lost - we received entrees before appetizers, courses were brought without any spacing with dishes piling up. Then to top it all off the server puts a 20% fat gratuity on the entire check and makes the comment that “we don’t want you to do any math here”. We were a table of 4! WTH? If it’s a no tipping restaurant then the tip should be imbedded in higher prices for food and wine the way Danny Meyer restaurants do it. Sad - will never go back because of this bad experience.
Service was terrible. Waitress was uninterested and downright rude. 20% service charge was automatically included so perhaps she has no motivation to be pleasant or efficient. Dropped our $600 bill on the table without a single word, not even a thank you. Food was forgettable. Portions were small for the price. Ambiance was nice but not enough reason to come back. Overpriced and underwhelming.
I really like this restaurant. This is my 4-5th times to visit there. All foods are very very tasty. Love, Love, Love. but service is not great. Waiter doesn't seems like he cares. Vey cold. Their silver ware they use is way too cheap. The amount of money we spend there, I think I should have better service.
The bar is fantastic, the selections are always original and the staff is cool. The resto has great ambiance and the staff is welcoming and kind. The food is to die for. It is my favorite resto in LA.
What used to be an amazing restaurant has gone downhill. Food was terrible
Love this place but it took a half hour after sitting before we could get a server’s attention.
I was much looking forward to the evening, especially after reading so many rave reviews. The venue was beautiful, especially the outdoor area.
The food was good, not great, considering the prices, portion and other great restaurants in the area. While the hostess and bussing staff were very diligent and helpful, our main server was hard to locate and barely checked on us. The drinks we ordered either arrived very late or not at all - the coffee with dessert never arrived and the server only noticed the missing coffee when she came to drop off the check and we had to ask for the coffee to be deducted from the final check. This kind of service does not merit 20% service charge.
We had a reservation but the wait time was still over 1 hour
Waited for an hour and half for a table that we already teaerved
Valentines menu is not a good value nor as good as regular menu
They had a prix fixe for Valentine’s Day which was not clear when booking. They had no dairy free option for dessert and charged me incorrectly. I pointed it out 3 times they refused to correct the bill. I finally showed the manager and they corrected with no remorse. I sent back my fish it wasn’t properly cooked and they never brought it back. A shame.
The food was absolutely wonderful! The chicken sticks in my mind - scrumptious! The only problem was the service. We piled our dirty dishes at the ends of our table, trying to make room on the table and help the server, but they just sat there. And they could have made more money, had anyone thought to ask us if we wanted more drinks. I will definitely go back for the food - fingers crossed that the service (or lack there of) was a fluke.
Server could not open wine bottle, bathrooms were out of service, server unattentive, food undercooked. The food that was cooked correctly was good though, as it should for such expensive prices. Not as good as it used to be!
Terrible service, food was not worth the price. As a cherry on top, every toilet in both the men's and women's restrooms was out of order. We had to relieve ourselves on top of other people's waste. This place needs to be shut down.
This place is expensive. We’ve been before but it’d been a long time so we were excited to take friends that were in town as we remembered it being an excellent spot. Trying to not write an essay so lowlights include:
- no working bathrooms, they’d flooded.
- waitress did know what drinks the bar had and we were swapped waiters without the original telling us.
- told an order had run out after everyone else’s mains had arrived but theirs.
- food was mediocre at best, no one, but me, liked their food.
- crazy expensive bill.
I’ll pass next time.
Creative food, prepared beautifully with unique and delicious flavors. Interesting decor that matches the unique menu.
Meal was overall good but mixed. We were surprised to get a reservation so easily at the last minute but now I know why. Food is overpriced but good. Service is overpriced (especially considering they include service charge) and overall poor.
We had two waiters (one regular, one trainee). Super attentive in the beginning through the delivery of the meal. After that they disappeared. Waited 10-15 min in an almost empty dining room for our check to be delivered and returned. On the way out we spotted all the waitstaff gathered together watching one of them do card tricks or some other such nonsense.
Took my girlfriend for date night everything was amazing we enjoyed it very much
we love the food at Hinoki and the Bird and our server was excellent as well. what marked them down was that the speed of the drinks service was slow and my G&T when it eventually arrived was flat and watered down, the replacement i requested was the completely amazing and what I had requested.
Food is good, Ingredients fresh, but won’t pay that value again. Ambiance is lovely, but the noise level is high. Access to the building is not great, since I didn’t drive there.
Also, the cocktail menu on opentable is outdated. They no longer serve one of the drink I was planning on getting.
Came for DineLA. The truffle dumplings was AMAZING, and the lobster ramen was great too (expectations a little high from an Instagram photo than reality but hey it was still good). Not even a donut person but I liked the miso donuts too. Yum!
This was my birthday dinner - I was expecting a far more subtle greeting, instead I got a
I had a reservation for 2 people at 8 o’clock this past Saturday at Hinoki & the Bird. When I arrived the hostess said she had no record of the reservation. When I showed her the reservation on my app she said even if she had my reservation the wait would be 25 minutes and we should wait at the bar. We put our name on the list. However, there were no seats at the bar (this was obvious when she suggested it), so I told her I wasn’t going to wait and let her know she could take us off the list. She didn’t offer to validate my parking and watched me walk out. I’ve called management that night and was told to leave my name and number so they could contact me. I’ve had no contact from them and it’s been two weeks.
Terribly disappointing experience.
Disappointed. I had heard wonderful things about this restaurant, but it did not live up to my expectations. First, we were seated 55 minutes late for our reservation. The service continued to be poor. We waited a long time between appetizers and entrees, and when they were finally delivered, they came without utensils. Then that was another wait to find a server and ask for utensils! The food was good but not extraordinary. Actually, the dish we liked best with the butternut squash ravioli that was delivered to us by mistake. In the end, we discovered that they added on a 20% tip automatically, so I guess reviews are the only way to express our disappointment in the service. Please try harder!
