It has a really good vibe. Great spot for a date night.
I had not been here since the new chef took over about 2 years ago. It is excellent and, if anything even better than before. The fried chicken rivaled that of Charleston and the pork chop was amazing - succulent and perfectly seasoned and cooked.
The addition of the former private events side of the patio with the heated floor allowed for spaced diners but with enough diners that the space had energy. Our waiter was fairly new to town and very helpful and friendly. I will eat there again.
Nice ambience. Fun for date night or friends dinner
The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, the outdoor seating area equipped with fire heaters, and candles provided an intimate, romantic and safe place to enjoy a delicious meal. The wine and food was delicious. Oh, and the fried chicken is to die for.
The food is interesting but salty. Please lower the salt and let us taste other flavors.
Poor service. Food came out in 6 minutes after we put in the order. Mains came out very quickly after. Turn and churn feeling.
The patio is outstanding. However, the service was lacking. After one cocktail, we were told that the bar had run out of our mixer. The wine took well over 15 minutes to arrive to our table and when it did, it was not the one we had selected because that, too, was out of stock. The steak that my husband ordered, which he stressed repeatedly to be cooked well done, and which I stressed to be cooked "well well well done" because that's how my husband likes it, came to the table very pink inside. It had to be sent back but it couldn't just be thrown back on the grill - the chef needed to start from scratch. Can you imagine how long that took? I had finished eating my own meal and then waited for the new steak to arrive and then I sat and watched my husband eat his "medium" steak. After one bathroom visit, I mentioned to a staff member that one of the stalls was out of toilet paper, and when I went again before leaving the restaurant, all three stalls were out of paper and so I had to find a staff member, notify them, and then wait in the hallway for someone to restock the bathroom. I know Covid has changed things but some of these issues have to do with management and not Covid. I have always liked Hinoki and hope that my husband is willing to give it another try.
Really great experience all around. And their space is well-suited to the current dining restrictions without having to cobble together some parking lot overnight. The staff and food ... it was the best dining experience we've had in months.
Excellent food and ambiance. We very much enjoyed the dining experience.
Amazing food
Love the menu
Good trendy music and casual
Excellent food! Every dish had great flavor and was also healthy, not drowning in oil. The hamachi appetizer and octopus were my favorite! The miso donuts are a must!
They have completely downsized their menu to about 10-15 items which includes appetizers up until main courses. They used to have quite a large menu from the last time we were there. I can understand downsizing due to tough times, but it was supposed to be mentioned upon making the reservation that something that drastic has been changed.
We also had a reservation at 8:30 and their kitchen closed at 9:30. It was not mentioned to us and when we wanted to order more food we were caught off guard.
To go to this kind of a place and spend this kind of money I would not expect that kind of a situation to happen. Overall the ambiance is still good and the food is just as delicious, I just wish those two things were mentioned.
Very hip, mid-century meets Asian decor. Creative and outstanding menu. A little bit of confusion regarding the wine list and what the have available, but definitely one of my favorite spots. Try the asian ribs!
With so many food choices in L.A., service matters immensely. Food was fine, although no “wow” factor (actually the lobster ramen was bland). I’ve had better service at fast food restaurants. The server was even more bland than the lobster ramen. He inexplicably walked away mid-order not once but twice — while we were ordering drinks and ordering main course. No attention to details such as making sure plates and cutlery were on the table when shared plates came. Then....no wonder! A 20% gratuity was automatically added for a party of 4. Our server didn’t have a thing to worry about, so he didn’t. Too bad—Hinoki and the Bird used to be so good.
Please ask the general manager to call me. Thank you.
Food was decent, service was underwhelming. Not sure how they can justify a mandatory automatic 20% tip—this just makes the staff lazy and inattentive.
Great service from waitress. Not great service from the kitchen. 2 dishes of the 5 so spicy we could even get through. They mentioned the kitchen had been making it too hot. Then the duck and rice came out cold with bottom of the canister rice that was hard. Overall amazing ambiance but extremely disappointing food wise and no reduction in bill.
Service is included in the bill. Staff acts accordingly and provides none.
Slow. Very slow.
Worst dining experience I have had in LA in 13 years
Great food
The menu used to have more interesting Asian-fusion dishes. They seem to have settled into more American fare. No entirely. But I miss the Asian dishes.
The food was great but the service was sub par. An appetizer was forgotten and there was no apology or offer to bring it later. Our waiter seemed distracted.
Fresh, clean, and flavorful food with a great patio.
Another great meal at Hinoki
Introducing a newly doctrinated foodie to the various tastes was very enjoyable
Food was good but not good enough to take away from the terrible service provided. Hinoki adds an automatic 20% tip and our waitress sure acted like she did not care to actually serve us.
Terrible service. Server was both inattentive and had a bad attitude. Asked to have another server but there were only two available. He was more helpful but because he had to help us on top of his other tables, he also had a bit of an attitude. Little did we know that 20% gratuity is automatically added. No wonder they could care less about good service.
Visited for the first time because of Dine L.A. Service was attentive but not as prepared or knowledgeable as I would expect. Good was under seasoned and underwhelming (particularly the lobster ramen).
The dumplings were excellent. I’d definitely get it again. The lobster ramen lacked salt. Not that special. Disappointing. The spicy chicken sandwich was very spicy but tasty. I’d order it again but ask for less heat. The restaurant is a beautiful space. Attentive and professional service but not very warm.
Food is always excellent, our favorite place in LA for years. First time I had to sit inside and it was loud. Service seemed to skip us and the staff kept serving dishes to our table that were not ours. We were surrounded by DineLA diners of which we were not, we ordered off the full menu. Not my favorite night out here and I’m assuming the chaos that was occurring was due to DineLA. In the end we were also served a dessert that was not what we ordered and we were given someone else’s check. We saw our server when she took our drink order, then again when she brought us someone else’s check. The host or manager tried to remedy the situation but it was too late, dinner was long over. We will be back but it may be a while. Experience is important when dining in an establishment like this and spending the money for all of it.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to taste the food or drinks because the waiter never introduced themselves within 25 minutes I've spent in there.
Our party consist of 6 people. Everyone thought the portion was way too small thus the price high. Three people wanted steak, and it wasn't available that night.
Absolutely incredible on every level. If you’re looking for a deal, this is not the place. If you are looking for n elevated culinary experience, this is one of the best places you could possibly eat in Los Angeles. The service is as good as it gets. #bravo
New Year’s Eve - food was ok.
This restaurant is beautiful -- great place to celebrate special occasions.
This was a client dinner for a client who lives in the area but was unfamiliar with the place. Everything was great. The food was excellent flavor wise and the service was outstanding. This is a 20 percent tip included menu which is always scary but they were great. Try the Cod. It is excellent. All the waiters suggestions were very good. The noise level can be an issue in West. LA. The clients thought it was perfect here. A really nice place!
Restaurant had a relaxing evening ambiance. Service staff was friendly, professional, and food was served at a good pace. My wife and I enjoyed that there is the option of ordering all six appetizers for a set price of $24, which allowed us to sample everything. Be aware, the appetizers are not samplers but rather normal orders but at a better deal than individual orders of $6 per appetizer. The location was a 3-minute drive from Century City mall, which is convenient. Valet parking is a flat $10. Overall, it was a nice dining experience for us. I heard about this restaurant through a good friend and we happened to be in the neighborhood.
As Los Angeles higher end restaurants seem to be trending to a mandatory 20% gratuity, tips are no longer 'earned', so extra efforts, smiles, and overall great attitudes are gone. Sadly, Hinoki jumped into this ugliness and, along with just ‘ok’ food, I won't be returning.
Always good and innovative. Patio is great and atmosphere perfect. Only criticism is maybe less bread in some of the appetizers. It’s hard not to eat bread when it comes w dish.
It took over 45 minutes for our server to acknowledge our presence, even after we flagged down another staff member who kindly took our drink order. When our waitress did come to the table, she was saccharine and made no apologies for her ignoring us. Following our first interaction with her, she walked by our table once & asked in passing if the food was fine. Finally, it took another 15 minutes for us after we had finished dining to flag her down for the check. Never before in my life have I had such bad service at a restaurant of this sort. I am extremely disappointed in the service and was extremely angry upon reading that there was a 20% service charge included. The food was stupendous, but the service was so atrocious that I can not justify returning soon.
