There were a lot of competing flavors it seemed. I don’t know if a single dish we had was a harmonious bite. They were unfortunately out of several menu items as well.

Seems to always have large groups which means regular tables may get less attentive service. And the "order everything at once" mandate which means you cannot enjoy a drink with any food before dinner.

The food was mediocre at best and expensive, which is probably why, on a Saturday night, the place was only about 30% full. Too bad. This place used to be a "go-to" for us. The garden setting is lovely, but not enough to justify the big bill. (Note: Service tip is automatically included in the total, but they don't tell you that, they just expect you to see it on your bill, so pay attention!)

AMAZING!!!!!!! Every dish we had elicited audible gasps. Can’t wait to go back and try more on the memo. Salmon crudo and crispy chicken were our favorite.

I had been waiting to come try Hinoki & the Bird for a few years and have to say that I was pretty unimpressed. Traveling from the east cost, last year I had eaten at Gunsmoke and was blown away with one of the most interesting and best restaurants I had ever eaten at and was hoping for an equally exciting experience at Hinoki & the Bird. But to say I was disappointed is an understatement. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing was exciting, unique or interesting. I would say every dish was mediocre to "fine," but not one of them wowed us.

Beautiful ambiance. Great Food. Great service. Great vibe. Easy to speak with your fellow diners. Love everything we eat. Most get the ribs, housemade ricotta, salmon, and Brussel sprouts. Sooo good.

I absolutely love this place. Every time I want to impress someone, I take them here. I brought my new boyfriend here and he was very impressed. Everything from the ambiance, service, food and staff made us feel extremely important. Our time there was perfect.

We had some last minute changes to our party due to illness so the front of house split our table and had us crowd together. It was pretty tight - and no one was seated in the adjacent table for the hours we were there. The disruption seemed unnecessary, given that there were a lot of tables empty.

It’s quickly becoming a favorite spot. One of our group is a vegan so she ordered kale salad and we split *all* the veggie sides for the table. Every single one was delicious but the mushrooms and the Japanese yams in particular we standout dishes. The vegan said it’s one of the best meals she’s had in… forever and we omnivores concur!

Absolute ripoff for Valentine's day. While the food tasted great, for almost $250/person I expect far more expensive cuts of protein to be on offer than squid, chicken, and hanger steak. The staff was definitely under siege unfortunately, serving one course every thirty-to-forty minutes for a 4 course pre-fix menu where the first course didn't even require any cooking. Portions were also stingy. On any other night it's a fun place to be, but skip this for Valentine's Day.

It just happened that it was Valentine’s Day. When we booked the table on OpenTable, nowhere did it say anything about a pre fix 4 course menu for $150pp. Anyways, we all say ok let’s do it and let’s celebrate. When we sat down the hostess didn’t forget to remind us that we only had a 2 hour limit at the the table, you know, it’s LA. They love this after COVID. The 4 of us in our party were annoyed as always by the comment but said ok. No problem, we’ll be done in about an hour. Two and half hours later we still hadn’t gotten out third course! The service was so bad it was unbelievable. I get that they got busy and things were out of control On then kitchen but pleasing the customer was definitely the their last priority if a priority at all. The audacity of still charging that price after the service and how long it took still amazes me. The food was good so there is that.

Husband and I decided to try something different for Valentine's Day, love this area and restaurant has a cool aesthetic (minus the front door entrance – was kinda weird. Its modern and all but weird). We were greeted and the hostess was nice but when she let us know that there’s a 2 hour max limit on dining, I just thought that was kinda rude. The server took forever to even acknowledge us. The prefixed menu was nice, good way to try a little bit of everything. So here’s where it went downhill: tables/chairs were super close to each other, dish took a very long time – 30-45 minutes wait time in between. I almost thought they forgot about us until my husband said something. One of the server actually brought us dessert and was so confused because we were barely on the first course – I almost just took it because I was starving at this point. How are you telling guest they have a 2 hour dining limit when you’re not getting your food in time. And the worst part was that the food was hardly worth the wait. The steak was bland; and the rest was mediocre. Seated at 730PM and left at 1030PM. Bill was almost $600 for 2 ppl (food was super expensive and not worth the price and the auto 20% service fee). Not sure if I would go back to try their regular menu or recommend it to family and friends. One star for location and ambiance. One star for the great conversation and laughs with the couple we met seated next to us, who also complained about the wait and food.

Sat on the patio. Food was delicious but too light on salads. Only a kale salad as a starter. They need more options. After all, this is LA! The rest was great. Good steak and cod. Yummy sorbets and cheesecake. An unusual spin on cheesecake as It was more like cake instead of the normal cheesecake and nice & light.

Fabulous all around! Great server with wonderful suggestions helped make our dinner perfect. Portions are big enough for sharing so since we were a party of 4 we tasted a lot! Cod and Hanger Steak , sashimi, kale salad, Brussel sprouts,and fried rice. All were exceptional. Corkage fee is hefty and prices were high but worth it

The good: The crispy chicken on the “small plates” part of the menu was fantastic and the portion was huge. We tried one and took the other two pieces home. The star of the show was the yams. Absolutely amazing. The pork chop was also quite good. The bad: Black cod was a bit too salty… everything swimming in an oily salty brine. We also ordered a bottle of Kunin Pape Star ($98) only to have the wine director come back and tell us it was sold out and offer us a bottle at almost triple the cost.

We went there for NYE. We waited 20 min for the server. The 3 course pre fix menu was lack luster. The appetizers were very basic. Second course was worst. The fried chicken was undercooked. The Kale salad had no dressing. The Branzino and Cod were ok. The steak was cold. We notified the manager and sent it back. It came back out the same temperature. When we notified the manager again, she said “I will let the kitchen know.” How does that help the customer? I’ve have not seen this level of incompetence and unprofessionalism in a long time! Don’t waste your time or money! At $200/per person, we could have done a lot better elsewhere.

Loved everything about this restaurant. Perfect combination of flavors and the restaurant has a really cozy atmosphere. It’s a hidden gem so not too crowded either. I recommend it to anyone wanting a special date or has out of town visitors or you just want a great meal

For the last 4 years a colleague of mine recommended this place to me. I live in Miami and usually visit Los Angeles every other years. Although I had in mind Hinoki & The Bird, I never had a chance to have dinner there. Covid time also prevented me to visit LA for the last 2 years. When coming back to Los Angeles, I made a point to have dinner at Hinoki & The Bird. I am so upset of myself. What a shame! My dinner at Hinoki & The Bird is one of the best I had from a long time. And I try to visit great restaurants in Miami, New York and Los Angeles. The place is so beautiful; The food is so delicious and original; The presentation is outstanding; and The service was great: Brieann is wonderful. She gave me the best advice on what to order. Everything is there for you to have a spectacular experience in such a pretty venue. I already want to go back to LA only to have dinner at Hinoki & The Bird again.
