I probably would recommend solely based on food/drinks, just not on New Year's Eve. Prices went up 33%, staff seemed in a rush to get people out and although the live music was nice, the place was really loud. I made a reservation, but we got seated by the bathrooms and a (cute but) very loud train that overpowered the live music, while half the restaurant was empty. The groups that attended made up for that though... the Riesling was amazing, the chicken schnitzel was great. Cranberry sauce would have made it even better.
We went with a group of 10 friends and tried a wide variety of dishes and it was wonderful! The atmosphere was full of Christmas cheer, live music, decorations and fabulous service. I want to go back with my family so they can experience the fun.
My 2 brothers and I took our 87 yr old mother out for a some Christmas time fun with just her boys.
The food, atmosphere and service here are exemplary. There is a friendly, family vibe that makes you feel at home--you cannot do better in terms of food, either. I cannot say enough about this gem.
This was our first time at Himmel's. We were very happy with the food and service. Our server was very personable and helpful. We will definitely come back. (We were lucky to get a parking space right in front, but I can see where that might some time be a problem.)
People should know that the once 1/2 Italian 1/2 German menu days are over. Menu is 90% German.
First time there. Brought Mom,aged 90. We all loved it.
Had a blast, had accordionists when we were there Saturday. Regulars made it even more fun experience. There was a dance floor to polka! Food was authentic and delicious! Portions very generous! Their bread was out of this world!
Food outweighs service. I recommend they ditch the iPad or tablet table service; it's a matter of personal opinion. Need more servers on busy evenings.
The food was very good, with generous portions, but the service was terrible. To be clear, we had a great busboy who was friendly and attentive, but our waiter completely forgot about us (a table of six!). Things reached the height of absurdity when we were trying to leave. I must have waited for twenty minutes and asked at least two other employees before the waiter brought me our check. By that time, I had long sent the rest of my dining party home, because my one year old had started getting cranky. Really soured an otherwise pleasant evening.
Love Himmels especially on the nights with their accordion player - it’s impossible not to feel happy when you’re there! The food is a treat and it’s got a wonderful “neighborhood place” feel to it.
Wiener schnitzel is outstanding! Service was friendly and prompt.
This was our second time and the four of us had a nice time. We were early so it was quiet and got busy later. We all had German dishes which we all liked. Next time may try the Pizza or an Italian dish.
Table cloths and Friday night guitar entertainment make for a pleasant outing.
Himmel's was a delight! The German atmosphere was tasteful and most authentic, as was the food. The Wiener schnitzel was thin, well-seasoned, and tender and the Bavarian potato salad was light and flavorful. The pork shank and liver dumpling soup also evoked memories of our travels to Switzerland, Germany and Austria, and the spätzle was homemade. There is no luncheon menu at this time and dinner portions were huge, but we enjoyed our meals the next day. We would prefer a luncheon with smaller portions. Service was excellent and friendly. There is live music on selected evenings and we hope to try their specialty pizzas in the future. We would highly recommend Himmel's to anyone who would enjoy a lovely European meal.
We just LOVE Himmel’s!! VERY consistent on the food...huge portions, delicious and authentic (both pizzas and German food.). Nice pours on wine. Lovely atmosphere with fun live music on many days. A real gem, we will keep coming back!!
Food was delicious. Service was friendly but very understaffed.
Always kind of quirky when you go . . . kind of like you don't belong. This being said, they have some of the better German food around (so difficult to find good examples of this cuisine in Chicago).
We were very pleased to find such excellent and authentic German cuisine in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Service was excellent and friendly. We truly enjoyed this experience.
It was an extremely hot evening and just after our food arrived, my wife asked if the air conditioning could be turned up a bit. Although our waitress tried, she was met with a blank "No" from the bartender (in charge of the A/C, I assume).
That, plus the overly loud accordian player, (and I get that people go there for the music, it was just too loud from my point of view) meant that we asked for our food to be boxed up and we left. I swear it felt more comfortable in the 90 degree heat outside.
Our server was not attentive. It was extremely busy that evening which could have been the issue, however she did not check on us once we ordered. I had to ask the busboy to find her to order a beer and also for the check.
The level of noise was terrible. It was very difficult to carry on a conversation.
Having said this, the food was amazing and I will return and continue to recommend Himmel's.
Wonderful service, friendly wait staff, friendly environment for small children and delicious food!
Great German food! I’ll be returning. The pizza is quite delicious as well and not your run of the mill standard offerings
Outstanding Schnitzel ! I wish the two sisters would reopen the Brauhaus !
Dinner was wonderful and our server was very knowledgeable and guided us through the menu. It was a bit difficult to understand.
We go here for the pizza and the schnitzel, which were great as always but today the service was less than ideal. The waitress was either new or very unsure of herself and unfamiliar with the promotional schnitzel-fest menu that was in place this day.
The food is fabulous. I really love the potato pancake appetizer. My steak was cooked perfectly. My husband had the pork tenderloin in cream sauce and loved it. Plenty of food. Large portions. Will definitely return
We always come out of Himmel's satisfied. Great food, wonderful drinks and fabulous staff. I recommend Himmel's to everyone!
Good food, German atmosphere,friendly service
Celebrated a birthday. Great food. Great service. Fun atmosphere. They even worked with me and let me drop off a cake early to set up the surprise. Will definitely be back.
Fantastic and kitsch. Food was traditional German and great.
It was my mom’s birthday and I wanted to treat her to dinner. It was a great experience; the food was delicious and the staff helped me set up a nice birthday dessert and asked the musicians to play happy birthday. The whole place sang and my mom was so happy!
My favorite place to chill out Friday night: good food, great music.
Great spot for German food and atmosphere. We had a wonderful meal and loved the live music.
We are frequent diners at Himmel's. Food is always excellent and portions are more than generous. Service is inconsistent and busy times make it worse. The best time to go is for an early dinner to get the best service. The owners are really friendly and will always greet you or walk to your table to check on you when they are there.
We went for my husband’s bday. Service and food were great!
Himmel's was fantastic. The food was superb. The staff was very friendly and we enjoyed dancing to the accordion player.
The food was great alone with the atmosphere and service was great ,friendly and a welcome feeling as soon as we walked in.we will be back enjoyed the evening thank you
Excellent food and drink. But, on a windy day, the smoke from the ovens wafts thru the seating area. All 4 of us left smelling like smoke.
Yeh dinner was great until they ran out of strudel !!!’ Who runs out of strudels at 7pm in a Saturday night ?
The food was fantastic (vegetables could have been cooked a little longer) but the service was horrible. The server forgot about us after dropping off our drinks and it took about 25 min before we finally asked the busser to get her for us. It is a small restaurant and we could see her going in and out of the kitchen with nothing in her hands and chatting with the bartender. Then when the food came, I got the chicken spaetzle and I was turning my plate because the chicken was hanging off the edge, the server without asking reaches down and spins the plate back around getting grease all over my silk top (still cannot get the stain out). She checked on us once and we had to ask the busser for boxes. She then came to our table and asked us how we were, we asked for the check and she didn't even have it on her even though she could see the boxes on our table. If we ever go back I will definitely make sure we do not get that server again.
