Hilo Bay Cafe Ratings und Bewertungen
Tried HBC on recommendation of others and on-line reviews. After several previous trips to Hilo on our annual visit to the Big Island, we made a point of coming here. Our dinner here did not disappoint in terms of taste, quality and service, being seated in the bar area sucked. We ordered ribeye steak and the scallops special. Both were wonderful and expertly done! Ian our server was great, very personable and attentive. My Our only complaint is where we were seated.
Yes, it was a Friday night, but we did have reservations made some time in advance. If I had known the booths in the bar area were a tight fit for a big guy with a bad back and the adjacent bar noise, I would have waited for another table in a quieter part of the restaurant (they don't lower their prices at these tables). It would not deter me from coming back, just smarter on where to ask to be seated. Again, superb dinner, backed by great service, just not the best seating to make it rise above an acceptable dinning experience.
Went there last night for my 25th birthday. My boyfriend and I have heard good things about it so we thought we’d try it out. We got there exactly on time, they had popcorn on the table that was stale and chewy. We ordered a half order or bread, a sushi roll, and steak and pasta for our entrees. Maybe about 20 mins in we got our sushi and bread. They didn’t give us soy sauce with the sushi which was kind of annoying and they didn’t even check on us so I couldn’t ask for some so I just ate it without. It was okay, honestly the bread was the best thing we had from there. An hour goes by, nobody comes to check on us and we’re wondering where our food is. Other tables that sat down after us were getting their food and the table along side us ordered nearly the same thing and their appetizers and entrees came within 15 mins of each other (if that) after about an hour and ten minutes our entrees come. I’m starving and cut into my steak which was raw. Not rare, not medium rare but RAW! My boyfriends pasta was swimming in who knows what, the shrimp wasn’t deveined it was just kind of mediocre. The waiter comes by and my boyfriend shows the waiter the steak and he was like okay I’ll take that back that looks definitely undercooked.. yeah, I could mentally head chef Ramsay saying “RAW” in my head. A few minutes after that someone brings a complimentary bowl of edamame for waiting for my food. Honestly I wish someone gave me that before since I was waiting over and hour for my entree but nonetheless that’s nice. My boyfriend was starving so I told him to go ahead and eat. My steak finally came back, perfectly cooked just over-seasoned. Thankfully I had a side of rice because it was extremely salty, so was the vegetables. I couldn’t even finish it because of how salty it was. I ordered the wine that was advised to have with the steak, oh god that was a mistake. They did not pair well AT ALL! Anyways, not a happy birthday for me :(
Went for Valentines Dinner. Regretting we sat inside as the restaurant has outdoor seating. The lighting inside was way too bright. Like eating in a cafeteria A restaurant should have romantic lighting especially on Valentines Day. Ruined the dinner for me.
So I called hilo bay cafe. I asked for a manager. The girl asked what it was regarding because she said it's really busy. 😡 I said a complaint about last night. She put me on hold and Anna answered. She was nice. I asked if she was working last night. She was. I told her that Tasha who was working up front forgot about me and that she was even sitting people without reservations. Anna told me that Tasha wasn't feeling good and went home early and thinks that she overlooked the reservation. But then she said it's not an excuse. I told her about the email this morning saying i no showed. She said she going call open table and make sure I get my points and talk to the owner Kim to see what they could do for me. Anna called back a few hours later and did I have a $40 gift card.
It took about 40 minutes to be seated. People who didn't have reservations were seated before us. I had 2 young kids getting irritated and was hungry. We almost left.
Location overlooking the Hilo bay was absolutely beautiful! We were surprised at the limited menu selections. Our waitress was very personable; however, she either had too many tables to service, or she was inefficient. But we enjoyed a beautiful sunset in a wonderful location!
Service is very good. We've enjoyed eating at HBC about 6 times of late, as we drive up from Kau. We love the lanai and the view. Ambiance is so naturally a 5 star event, since the bay is right there. The food is unique. They accommodate some quirks foe me, which I appreciate. The bar drinks are very interesting. Hilo's got a winner here!
Terrible service...actually worse I have ever seen: we waited at the hostess desk for 5 min with no one coming despite heavy waiters traffic...then the hostess came to the desk , did not even acknowledged us and called another party before running away....needless to say that we left at this point! Will never go back.
Hilo Bay Café has consistently great food! Always tasty, you can depend on making your taste buds happy. The service however, can be quite mediocre. Sometimes great, our service was disappointingly inattentive. We felt like we were an afterthought and the waiter didn't seem to listen to our requests. We ordered desserts and some other employee brought them, bringing something we didn't order (ice cream flavor) to one of our party. We had them take it back and then waited 10 minutes for the correct dessert to arrive. Everyone else was mostly done with their dessert by the time the other person received the correct dessert. The waiter seemed distracted with talking to other employees rather than attend to u .throughout the meal. : (
We have eaten there before and it has been okay but this time the food was excellent. We ordered steaks and they were cooked exactly how we requested them and the seasoning was perfect. The pupus were delicious and our server was very attentive. The tables on the lanai overlooking the bay just make it a more enjoyable evening.
Beautiful place, food was good, but a little artsy. Sea food pasta was good, but not really a pasta dish, more of a soup. Crab-cake salad was good, but not much for 17.00. Great service, food was good, just not quite what I expected.
We usually eat here when we visit Hilo. Food is good. Menu hasn't changed much since they opened. I somehow think the quality of the food was better at the old location, but this is fine. Service is good. But waitress kept using the term"my dears" when taking orders, checking in on us, etc. A bit too much. We chuckled. The scenery is excellent so its a great place for visitors to go for a nice meal. There aren't too many choices in Hilo.
2nd time dining here, and love it. Travel 45 min just to go. Heather, our server, was fantastic. What a friendly and warm person that took very good care of us. Food was amazing. Burger, Pot Pie, Ribs, and Fish & Chips. AND the dipping donuts for dessert. AMAZING! This will be a regular spot to take any out of town guests.
I was in Hilo for over a week and dined at Hilo Bay Café multiple times! The food and service is fabulous, the restaurant itself is attractive, and it is quiet enough to have conversations (and no loud music, thank goodness!). Thumbs up!
Did not want to honor our reservation, said it had "just come in" hostess was rude, insulting condescending... . No compensation offered.
Spoke to manager today. Admitted that we weren't treated correctly. Still no offer of compensation.
Hadn't been to Hilo in a long time and didn't expect to see a place like Hilo Bay Cafe there. Loved the vibe, very comfortable, clean, food made with quality ingredients . We had a hard time deciding on what to have. Ended up with the Mauka/Makai Sliders, Makai Roll and the Mauka/Makai Chirashizushi and homemade lemonade made with pink lemonade lemons! We had a great lunch with terrific service! Thank you!
