HILLTOP 1892 Ratings and Reviews
Menu has very good selection of meats, seafood, and vegetarian plates, usually with a few specials. Good wine listed, moderately priced. The views of Big Rock Ridge and Novato are pretty especially at sunset. Lunch on the lanai outside is great in warm weather. Good bar/bartender.
Varied menu that should satisfy all tastes; service very attentive but not intrusive. All of our special requests were dealt with. Portions generous. Calamarie and crab cake appetizers were just done just right. The filet mignon was done as ordered; desserts are a highlight- moulton chocolate cake with caramel sce! Nice place for family, group dining.
A very noisy and rude 'VIP' table was seated next to us just as our food was presented. The 'din' was so loud that we could not hear one another and we were forced to go find our server and ask her to move us. We were moved to the booth area and while the sound was some better it still was enough to interrupt our dinner and our conversation. We asked the manager to ask the table to be more quiet and he told us that they were VIP's and there was nothing he could do and he didn't see what the problem was. Our server tried to be helpful, but there wasn't much she could do. Others were leaving because of the racket and so, subsequently, did we.
Fabulous night. Our waitress, Sasha, helped make it a spectacular evening. She was attentive and just a delight all around. The noise level was extreme but that was because of a party of about 25 people near us. However, it's holiday time and that was okay. Our party of 4 all had a different entree and each dish was wonderful. The only complaint I would share is that the Rack of Lamb only had 3 chops, a light serving but not a light price. The Eggplant and Acorn Squash were spectacular!
We were able to be seated in the quieter section near the window.
The noise level in the main dining room was too loud to carry on a conversation.
The wine list was affordable and the Bella Pesca cocktail was very good. Our waitress was sullen. My wife was served a different salad than she ordered. Her filet mignon was tasty but it was room temperature when it arrived, while her potato au gratin was very hot. They did warm it up, but when it was returned to the table she was done with the rest of her meal. We liked the choices on the menu and will give it another chance.
We had a wonderful meal from apps to desert with our group of 6 recently. Only complaint was that the service was a little slow. Our server, while pleasant, was preoccupied with a larger group she was also waiting on. Empty dishes sat on the table a while. She made some adjustments to our our final bill as a result. Corkage fee is only $10 here, so we decided to bring our own wine. Overall, we had a very good meal. The restaurant was decorated beautifully for Christmas and we would all recommend to friends.
On my second visit to the "new" Hilltop I had a cup of the soup special - chicken vegetable - which tasted like cream of mushroom with a lonely pea floating in it. The shaved prime rib sandwich which was just fair. Dessert was magnificent - the Guinness brownie with raspberry sauce and ice cream was served piping hot and I scraped the plate! The biggest problem was the service. In a half empty restaurant at lunch, my friend and I sat for 10 minutes without menus and then had to flag down a waiter to order. No one ever checked back on refills for our drinks or water and we had to ask for a dessert menu. The check came promptly however. The great view and friendly hostess don't make up for the shortcomings.
My wife and I love this restaurant! A wonderful location for a delicious meal in a scenic, comfortable, relaxing environment. Worth the drive up from Sausalito, and a perfect central location to meet up with our friends coming down from Santa Rosa and points north. The staff is cordial and attentive. The menu is diverse and full of unique touches. Oh, and the paté is to die for. We'll be back!
I don't know if it was just an off night, but two of us ordered the Brick Chicken after the waitress raved about it. The sauteed kale and polenta sticks were excellent! The chicken was ho hum! My son ordered a wedge salad which arrived half dressed...noted by the waitress, my husband ordered the pork chop which arrived half cooked. Another of us ordered the Butternut Squash Ravioli, as described on menu "topped with brown butter sauce, asiago cheese and crispy sage". It arrived with a creamy cheese sauce...not what you would expect. The desserts were great. We had the Melted Pumpkin cake and the chocolate mousse. Both were delish! Too bad the mains marred the experience!
Would definitely recommend this place. Beautiful and warm setting with great views. The steak with the cabernet reduction sauce was out of this world. The biscuits baked with blue cheese was deliciously creative. The service was the best--friendly and attentive. We want to thank our server, Sean, for making it an enjoyable evening for our family.
Food is consistently delicious with a varied menu selection. Good waiters ready to attend all dining needs. This is one of our top three places to dine in Marin. The noise level is sometimes high which is expected near bar lounge area, but I am one who likes quiet dining.
This is my first visit back to Hilltop since it reopened. I had the petrale sole and my friend had the roasted chicken. Both were excellent. Server was very accommodating and switched out the vegetables for me. We had a very enjoyable evening! Only word of warning is if there is a local game on TV, the bar can get very nosiy!
The brunch at Hilltop 1892 was a very pleasant surprise. The views are phenomenal. I had huevos divoricados with a chile relleno. The chile was wrapped in a fantastic breading--crispy and tender, thicker near the top like a fluffy beignet. My partner had a crab cake benedict and said that the cakes were mostly crab. Bloody Marys were horseradish spicy and a hummingbird cocktail (St. Germain and sparking wine) shined. Would definitely go back.
Fish special was wonderful. Drinks are always a treat! I shared a couple of things with a friend and they split the dishes before they brought to the table which makes it so much easier than splitting at the table. Server was professional and fun. Nice evening.
