The Kobe Beef dish was delicious. The hostess and servers were nice. The restaurant was on the noisy side. The main problem was my wife's meal who was there on her birthday. She had the Lentil, Wild Mushroom dinner. They should take this dish off their menu. They do not know how to cook these vegetables. It had no taste, favor, or appeal. My wife could not eat it and left most of it on the plate. Do yourself a favor and remove this item from your menu.

Menu is somewhat limited, though the steak and frites are outstanding. Other courses were pretty mediocre. Service staff tried hard , but it wasn't the best we've ever had by a long shot. It's the bar and view that make this place special. I miss the escargot and free appetizers from the old days. Everything is adequate, but nothing to rave about.

We ate outdoors, and staff provided the heater when requested. We started with the Cheese Platter, and it was generous and tasty. Maybe could add a few slices of French bread to the crackers, but very good. I enjoyed the Lamb Shank, and my wife had the Pork Chop. Both very large portions. We had an excellent Merlot from the wine list by the glass.

Pleasant view from the small deck off the bar area, but still quiet.

We had reservations for 7 and a lovely table was waiting when we arrived. The food was delicious. Everyone had something different. The staff was very attentive and friendly.
We will come again very soon.

I have a so-so feeling about Hilltop. On one hand, it's a lovely place with a great view, and the menu seems promising. The servers all seem like nice people, but not all are great servers. There are no apparent bussers - at least not during Sunday brunch - but they're necessary. If we need water (that the server completely forgot despite our specific request - and when we asked her again, she had NO recollection of the prior request), or extra maple syrup, or a replacement utensil, a busser could do that - but no. When asked if something has an ingredient in it, the server might say yes/no - but they they're wrong. For example, I asked, "I don't eat xyz, does this dish have any?" The answer was 'no.' Then it arrives with xyz right on top. Also, the cooks aren't always executing the menu items as described on the menu. This is really frustrating for both servers and customers. I don't feel there's anyone overseeing things. The waffles are in quarter segments and somewhat artistically layered on top of each other of a medium plate with the waffles/fruit/butter/syrup/whipped cream filling the plate so much that it wasn't possible to eat without pushing something off. Why not use the larger plate that another diner had? Food sent back due to two mistakes took a long time to replace, as if it took it's turn after all the other pending orders, vs. a faster execution due to the mistakes made...stuff like that. I saw no manager, nor felt the presence of one in a flawless execution. We've been there at least 12 times.

We went for a Birthday. Arrived half hour early, thinking we would sit at the bar and wait, but there was a table open...good thing because the bar was full and a bit noisy. Very excellent sole picata dinner, and wine by the glass was reasonable with ample choice. Recommend highly for dining experience in one of the oldest venues in the county.

The view was spectacular as always! Salmon special with lentils was very tasty and a nice presentation. Server was knowledgeable and knew when to leave us alone and when to come back to check to see if we needed anything else. Good drinks& good dinner!

There were 4 of us for a mutual friend’s birthday and we had a wonderful evening. Two of us had the filet mignon and it was one of the best I’ve ever had!

Very comfortable restaurant without being too casual. Lighting was perfect; not too bright, not too dim. Server was attentive and friendly; however, there was some issue with our order without any explanation other than an apology for the delay. Burrata appetizer was excellent and was plenty for 3 adults. entrees were delicious and well portioned. The nighttime view from the restaurant was lovely. Looking forward to having our son's wedding rehearsal dinner here!

The food was good but out waitress was terrible. She kept asking us what our order was and brought the wrong dishes. She never wrote anything down and then kept apologizing saying they were training new people. Everyone else was great. She was the one that kept messing up. But the food was good and I will go back as long as she is not our waitress.

We generally like having a special dinner hear. On our last visit, the service was very slow and not attentive. The food was generally good, with the exception of the Sole Picatta, which was dry and flavorless.

Needed a place to eat lunch in Novato with the family. We made a reservation and they were able to accommodate us well. It has a nice atmosphere and good views. We had lunch in the lounge rather than the dining room and the service was very slow. The food was OK. Not great. Probably the giant pancake was the best . If I come here again I will ask to be seated in the dining room where I assume the service will be better . I won’t come back for the food but I might for the view

The views are lovely but food just so so. Menu reads well but quality does not hit the mark. My husband had something called Yorkshire pudding but it was flat and tasteless. I had the pancake with bacon and eggs but everything was bland and the bacon was burnt.
I would only go here for a drink but there are so many more.great places to go for that.

Server told me he couldn't do separate checks for 6 people even though I requested that ahead of time. I have a difficult time believing that he "couldn't". Food was cold when arrived at the table. Could have been more potatoes & hollandaise instead of the tiny amounts that I got.

He did add 2 additional scones to our order to accommodate all of us, that was thoughtful. Menu stated butterscotch, they were blueberry & not cooked all the way through not his fault, of course.

Friendly and knowledgeable server. We enjoyed our appetizers and food overall. I ordered a Mojito, but it had way too much lime juice in it that it was too sour to drink. I had to add sweetener to it and kept adding water to it to make it drinkable. We ordered the meatloaf, short ribs, and pork chop entrees. All were delicious, but the pork chop was very tough to cut into and was hard to chew even though it was seasoned nicely. The chocolate snowball dessert was a good dessert.

This place is going downhil. When it first changed ownership after being closed, we were not impressed, but then the last couple of times, including Thanksgiving 2017 we were pleasantly surprised and looked forward to going back. We just went for Valentine’s dinner and were not at all impressed. Our waitress came once for introduction then took our order, then we never saw her again. No more water, how was our food, etc. The manager (didn’t introduce himself but he seemed like the manager) did come over to open the bottle of very expensive wine we brought. The special menu was confusing, as it said Chef’s menu $69 per person without wine pairing, $110 with. I wanted to order that. She took the order then came back and said I couldn’t have it without the wine pairing, I had to pay that price. ??? She said the manager explained it was for their record keeping or ringing it up, etc, which made no sense. I asked again and no explanation. The chef’s menu items were not offered on the regular menu. Disappointing. Food was okay but not great, and the desserts here were SERIOUSLY lacking. My bread pudding was tasteless. Overall, it seems they are slipping but we might try them one more time.

Food took 50 minutes to get to the table, they forgot a dish, then delivered it over cooked. Server had far too many tables and wasn’t attentive. No steak knives, water, drinks left empty. Manager bought the over cooked dish which was the right thing to do and we appreciated it. Others food was terrific. This is the most inconsistent restaurant and it’s the best spot in Novato - they can do better. The bar is always inviting and busy. There is one cocktail waitress to avoid. So Roll the dice in the restaurant or go for a drink at the bar at sunset.

We went on a Friday night during Mardi Gras week so the bar area was really bustling. There were a few specials on the menu and I got the jambalaya which had chicken, shrimp, and lots of sausage. It was a little spicy but it was delicious. I couldn't finish all of mine. My husband got the blackened catfish which came with veggies and mashed potatoes. It was good but he wished it were a bit more spicy. I washed mine down with a hurricane drink so it was a great ending to a great meal. The view is always beautiful up there and the service is always attentive. We've been here several times and have never been disappointed.

Lovely spot on top of a hill with nice views. Friendly service, good place for a special, midweek birthday lunch. No reservations needed then. I enjoyed my salmon and my father his ahi tuna.

The only downside to the lunch was the fact that my 87 yo father, who likes to have bread with his meals, specifically asked for some bread from the waiter when his food was brought to the table. The waiter responded that he would heat some up and then bring it for him. It never arrived. By the time we realized it wasn’t coming, it was too late to ask for it.

It is such a small thing, but it mattered for the overall experience

Hoping for a great meal and friendly host, waiter/waitress. It was my mother’s 75 birthday and her friend of 40 plus years plus 82 birthday. So disappointed we were seated near a large group we had a difficult time carrying on a conversation because they were so loud. My mother and I ordered the special and it was barely warm, the bread on the sandwich was to much for the amount of meat you received. The bread was not a good choice lacked taste. Unfortunately when I mentioned this to the waiter he asked what kind of bread should it have been I told him I wasn’t sure. I really expected him to remove the cost from my tab which he didn’t. He came across a bit rushed. So disappointed I can’t go back and do my moms birthday over.

Beautiful view, wonderful & friendly service, excellent cocktails (loved the Corpse Reviver #2 and the classic Margarita), good selection of rye whiskey & solidly good wine list. Wednesday nights are 50% off selected bottles of wine (a good selection) and we enjoyed that. The truffle fries were excellent - I won't usually order truffle fries because most truffle oil is fake and you can get a nasty aftertaste. My friends said they didn't care and I was shocked at how good they were. I also got an order of plain fries - wonderful. My friends burger was delicious, my other friend had the pot roast - also delicious. My husband and I both ordered the Creekstone NY steak with mushroom risotto. They steaks were properly cooked medium rare as we had ordered, but they were a bit tough and didn't have a lot of flavor. It didn't bother my husband as much as me, BUT, I write on agricultural and ranching and I have the advantage of buying beautiful grass-fed West Marin/West Sonoma county beef including Wagyu that sets the bar extremely high. The risotto was the only thing I would say was bad. It was a big glop of mush. But that's okay because I just ordered more fries! We were celebrating 2 birthdays and our server brought out a very nice little bag of sweet treats for both of the birthday guests. I'm looking forward to trying their brunch. If you want a really quiet place to gather, it is very lively. Our server was wonderful helping us select a table not near other large tables and the four of us don't mind lively.

I have eaten at Hilltop many times and they have never disappointed me. Their short rib pot roast is excellent and they do a great job on fish as well. This time I had the special steak and risotto and it was excellent. My colleagues ordered the lamb and fish and were all pleased. Wednesday is half price bottle of wine night so we go there often on that day. We always ask for Natalie and she is a really outstanding server. I have known her for years and she does an excellent job. I am sure we will be back.
