Highlands Ratings and Reviews
I was too early for my reservation but they were most accommodating. In fact, I was the only person there. However, they didn't suggest I sit at the bar first but showed me to my table. They have an amazing scotch list and serve it in correct size cut-glass. I was hoping for original "bangers and mash" since this is a "scottish pub". This was not available but their dish of the day was lamb and cranberry sausage with sweet potato mash and onion gravy; it was delicious. For dessert I had sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream...delectable. When in the area I would certainly visit again.
We went there for a book club meeting as it is one of the few "SCOTTISH" ( guess the country where the book originated) restaurants in NY.
Noise can be a big problem for us, but the wall between the bar and dining room made conversation possible for the first couple of hours. Then it got a wee bit loud
The food was great. The ingredients seemed fresh...pastry was not soggy and the smoked trout was a perfect portion.....no, no one had the haggis. In fact, for a pleasant change we did NOT all have bags to take home.
They did not rush us; indeed my only complaint is that they went to all the trouble to give us separate checks and slapped the group fee on each indi idual bill. Their loss.....i always overtip on these group things
We were absolutely floored by the food here. No matter what you order, literally everything on the menu is spectacular. Even the fish and chips (which in Scotland is a kind of "comfort food" item) was mind-blowingly delicious. As a Scottish person who misses home from time to time, Highlands seems less like a restaurant serving authentic Scottish food than a restaurant which serves the platonic ideal of Scottish food - what Scottish people WISH their food tasted like most of the time. It's on the high end in terms of price (for us, at least) but you really feel like you're getting every penny of it back in outstanding food.
Excellent selection of single malts from all regions of Scotland - bar area is rather boisterous and crowded; the dining area much quieter, cozy and set apart, tastefully evoking a Scottish homestead... the Haggis is surprisingly good, and the perfect compliment to Islay scotch 👍
Highlands continues to impress me year after year. I love the authenticity, great quality pricing, amazing cocktails and desserts. This is truly a "Gastro-Pub" - but there is nothing "pubby" about it other than the really warm feeling when you are inside. It's a place that feels like it should have been in NYC for 50+ years, but is barely a decade old. My favorites: Haggis, Beef Wellington, Bread Pudding Dessert, any of their craft cocktails, and amazing Scotch menu. You can't go wrong here.
We came for the Whiskey and were in Single Malt heaven. After several wee drams at the bar we had dinner, it was most excelent! The haggis appetizer was wonderful. The Scotch egg was, as my wife put it, Total Yum! The next time we are in the city the Highlands will be on our dining list.
Took my boyfriend for his birthday.. made a reso but arrived early to take advantage of the happy hour. Excellent whiskey options, we each had a cocktail and then shared the 3 whiskey flight for $20, great options & the pour size was generous. Dinner went smoothly and since I had mentioned to them that it was for a birthday, they were kind enough to put a candle in one of our desserts. The food was delicious and we left extremely satisfied and stuffed. We are looking forward to going again to try other items on the menu!
Even with a vibrant bar up front, the dining room in the back allows actual conversation over superb tipple. How could we not love a Greenwich Village spot that offers us a different Irish whiskey every time we go there? The crew are uncommonly kind & adept. The kitchen cooks with love & talent, sending out plates at perfect temp, with crunch & yield in proper proportions--& if they tell you a dish, such as the sublime shortrib, is prepared with garlic but just a touch, you can bank on it. The salads are original, restorative, fun. The only change we would welcome is a little more variety in the menu, maybe one ore two more dishes from the lighter side of gastropub. If they ever open for lunch, we'll be permanent fixtures.
I think I may me judging this restaurant a bit harshly because perhaps I over-expected. Regardless the appetizer and meal were nothing to write home about nor was the drink selection. I did like the overall feel of the place but I think I was hoping for less-hip and more Highlands.
I love this place but sadly they brought out the wrong dish for my friend and then when they finally brought out the right dish the fish was way under cooked and had to be sent back again to be recooked. This kind of thing obviously doesn't make the experience quite as enjoyable.
