Higgins Restaurant & Bar
We were in the bar side, so we expected the moderate noise level. We've been in the regular restaurant side several times before and it was a bit more quiet.
As always, the food was fantastic and service impeccable. The potato and asparagus soup was wonderful! It's nice to see long-time employees!
I was hosting friends from LA for their ONE evening in Portland, and Higgins was my first thought. It was terrific as always and they were delighted by everything - the look, the service, the food, the atmosphere. Thank you!
Excellent attention to food and details. Wonderful staff, especially John our waiter, always paying quiet attention and ready with ideas and suggestions.
Before our show I took my grandmother here for dinner. The noise level was pretty extreme and the service wasn’t quite like it usually is. We waited about 15 minutes and our waiter still hadn’t shown up so the person who was working the front desk/seating came back and took our drink order and told us about the specials. It was a about another half hour before our food got to us. I wouldn’t order the steak again but the flavor and attention to detail pertaining to the food was excellent.
Always a delicious meal, with excellent service and such great atmosphere. Higgins sets the bar for all of Portland's food scene, always has.
An icon leaves much to be desired. The goal of sustainability is laudable, so is the goal of providing an enjoyable evening with quality food. The service was condescending, the hard surfaces of the decor and the overly loud groups proving they were having a good time annoying, the food well prepared but no longer cutting edge, and the prices too high for the experience.
A real treat, best place we've eaten in Portland.
Wonder fresh fish and meats, fantastic sauces, and great waiters!
Food was outstanding, the bartender, host, and waiter we interacted with were professional and super friendly and the experience was very enjoyable overall!
Higgins is my “go to” restaurant in Portland. It is always well above average of the pricey. I guess you get what you pay for!.
I have been thinking about the bouillabaise/cioppino for years: sadly, although the online menu said it was available, it actually was not and there was a maitelote seafood preparation that was really uninteresting when compared with my recollection of the bouillabaise of a year or two ago. Still good, though.
I’ll be back - but I’m waiting for the bouillabaise to show up again!
The waiter was excellent! He knew all the specials by heart. The food was perfect. It was slightly stuffy in the restaurant - could use more air conditioning.
Always a treat to eat the fine food at Higgins. Never disappoints!
I love everything about Higgins. It is one of my two go-to establishments for before- or after- performances at Portland Center for the Performing Arts, Schnitzer Concert Hall, Keller Auditorium or Portland State University. The perfectly prepared, delicious, locally-sourced food and impeccable service have amazingly maintained their high quality for decades. On this occasion, I had asked to be seated in the bar, where I generally prefer the more casual ambience. Ordinarily, I am there later in the evening (post-performance), and was not quite prepared for the “very lively ambience” on this early evening. I love those beautiful old tin ceilings, but they can bounce around a lot of loud voices. Next time I’ll opt for the dining room for early evenings and save the bar for post-performance occasions. Everything else was as perfect as it always is!
I ate at Higgins years ago and it was quite nice. The service was good during this most recent visit, however the menu was limited and the specials Salmon and Halibut were lacking for a price of $48.00. For the price there are better venues in Portland.
Cosy and friendly feeling with a selection of colourful foods using local ingredients. Seems like a beloved place by local people and the atmosphere was welcoming, home-like, not too formal, yet still somewhere recommendable for elderly or special guests to accompany.
Higgins is consistently one of the best restaurants in Portland. The food experience is magical. It’s spendy so don’t go overboard on drinks
ALWAYS GREAT SERVICE AND GREAT NW FOOD. EVERYONE SHOULD GO AND EAT THERE.
Had an excellent lunch with a friend, followed by a delicious sorbet. A totally enjoyable event.
We've come to Higgins a number of times for lunch to celebrate our anniversary. The food is consistently outstanding, the service is professional, and the atmosphere is perfect.
I always have great meals and wonderful service here!
Excellent , especially the service.
It's great to find a restaurant where you can have a conversation.
Higgins has been our go-to restaurant for special occasions for many years. We still love it. The great food, excellent service, and romantic ambiance are always memorable.
Pleasant surroundings and great service. Higgins is a good place to enjoy a meal without being deafened by the noise from neighboring tables. Food is generally excellent and based on fresh locally sourced ingredients. The prices are high though.
This place is dated. The food is clunky and poorly executed from a technical aspect. Items are raw, under seasoned, unrefined, poorly paired etc. There is nothing fresh or current about it. It need a re-think on a few levels. Also pricey considering the quality of the product. It's a wonderful location and could be a real gem with a new approach.
We've gone to Higgins several times over the years and have never been disappointed. The food is consistently high quality and we really appreciate that the restaurant uses local produce and other ingredients.
We prefer the bar area since it's a little more casual and we've had great service in both it and the main restaurant.
A date with my husband after going to Broadway show.
We love razor clams and that’s what the special was on Saturday!! Yay for us...
Panna cotta for dessert was yum..
Higgins restaurant is as always dependably delicious and creative. We went to celebrate my husband's birthday and had a lovely evening.
The service was excellent. The skirt steak was very good. The fisherman’s stew was served on a bed of pesto which as cold so all of the seafood was cold and did not have as much taste as I would have liked. Also the croutons were a mismatch with the potatoes. The strawberry shortcake was excellent. The rhubarb cobbler was delicious but was dry needed more cream and I was charged when I asked for more. I thought that was petty. Overall, the meal was not as good as I remembered from previous visits to this restaurant when the food was more hot and hearty.
Visiting Vancouver for a work conference & decided to cross into Portland for dinner. We had a party of 7 - our table was ready when we arrived and we were able to immediately relax and enjoy our time. The staff were gracious and accommodating. The food was amazing. Of the 4 days we were there, Higgins was by far our best experience
We took a sizeable group to Higgins. The reservation was made for 12 and we wound up at 18; Higgins staff seamlessly addressed. Food was outstanding as usual- and everyone at the table was served within a couple of minutes of one another. Cannot speak highly enough of the staff's professionalism, the level of service- and as always the quality and thoughtfulness of the menu and food.
Bar was GREAT, but reserved seats in bar only occur on Saturday night. Service was really good - better than what we’ve had in restaurant.
Very accommodating. Delicious fresh food and great cocktails!
Kami was fantastic. So helpful in making menu selections and very friendly. The food was delicious and beautifully presented.
This enduring high end Portland restaurant has maintained a stellar reputation due to its elegant refined setting, excellent dishes using local ingredients in creative ways. On this visit we thoroughly enjoyed the duck with rhubarb. We loved two Fresh Oregon strawberry desserts, one nestled is a chocolate tart and the other accompanying pistachio pound cake. It was a special occasion for us and we were treated royally.
What can one say about one the best Portland restaurants? A James Beard award winning chef that is consistently great. The amazing fact is, this restaurant as been at the top for years. That is rare.
Classic old school but excellent restaurant in downtown Portland. Excellent fish and top notch service.
Always a favorite for my wife and me...the overall experience is well worth stopping by for when we are in the downtown Portland area.
We already have recommended you to two people we know. One couple said, our Granddaughter works there from time to time. She's a student wo studies nearby.
Our waiter's name was John. From Sydney, I think. He, and the lady who kept us served with water and came by to see if everything was going well, together with the superb meal, made this an evening to remember for a long time.

My favorite go to Portland restaurant. Highly recommend it
I had the halibut which was excellent but my husband had a ribeye steak which was very poor quality. It was at least 1/4 grisetle and tough all the way through. We should have said something to the waiter but we chose not to complain. Given the prices, Higgins needs to check the quality of their meat cuts more closely.
