I have gone to Higgins for years. It has been reliable and its location near the performing arts center is a real plus. Saturday night was the first really substandard meal I have gotten there and it was expensive to boot. I had one of the chef's specials and the chicken was overcooked to the point of being uncuttable. I told the waiter to please inform the chef (I wasn't asking for any accommodation--I just wanted the chef to know that he/she had missed on this one as I would want to know if my performance was substandard). The server made no reply, slung down the bill and left. It was a disappointing performance all around.
My wife and I realize that things can't go back to pre-Covid levels. We loved the food at Higgins (as always), but were disappointed that the stalwarts in the bar were not there. The bar was our Cheers -- hugs all around, knowledgeable beer people (Pauly - we and others miss him!!), and a general convivial feeling that isn't there now. It may come around so we'll just have to wait and see.
Higgins has done everything possible to make you feel “ safe” during the pandemic. The food is memorable Higgins quality. Service is great. It is so good to be back again . Thank you Higgins.
We always have a great time at Higgins - and will keep returning with family friends until we can’t anymore - because we are oldsters now. Thanks so much for the great service and friendly atmosphere and excellent food!
From the appetizer to the dessert the food was very good and well presented. It was our first indoor dining in 19 months and we were delighted. A very pleasant experience, and we felt well protected from Covid-19.
WONDERFUL flavors... everything was excellent....the duck was phenomenal...the pork nicely smoked... charcuterie was DELICIOUS.... fresh bread was great. The wine was REALLY great as well...And The service was impeccable!! I highly recommend this restaurant...first time in for us on our anniversary and it was very special feeling!
Noise level was "energetic" because of a loud table near ours. Otherwise, everything was wonderful. We came in after the symphony and had outstanding desserts. Very great service from our waiter -- we would give him lots more than five stars if we could.
All around excellent experience! And, so wonderful to be able to dine inside safely! Thank you, Higgins!
It was great to be back in our favorite restaurant. We were celebrating our anniversary and as usual, the food and service were outstanding.
Always a great place even though they just reopened indoor dining post covid..
One of the best restaurants in Portland. Great food, great people, great service!
Wonderful dining experience, with vaccination records check before we were seated, adequately spaced tables, and high-quality air purifiers in the dining area. We were a little disappointed with the last-minute shift indoors (and the resulting higher menu prices), but we went with the flow and enjoyed the amazing seasonal offerings that makes Higgins a Portland institution.
Had a delicious dinner at Higgins last evening. The duck was perfection though dessert was only so so. When in Portland splurge and have a great dinner.
I've been coming here regularly for 17 years. So happy that the bar is open again. Classic, cozy, welcoming, first class but completely unpretentious.
Amazing setting, and food is wonderfully presented, and the taste follows through.
Higgins does everything with class. At first I was hesitant because my reservation was for Piggins, but it was a wonderful experience. The service and food were of excellent quality and the outdoor seating was enchanting.
A Little spendy for the "quantity" of food that you get... What you get is Outstanding.. But $35+ for about 4-6oz of Ling Cod?? Outdoor on a paper plate..?
Like I said.. Food is (and always is) great.. just seems like you should get a little more from a glorified food cart (Now)..
The duck sandwich was so good, my wife wanted it two days in a row.
Magical dining experience on a summer evening. Hope you will do this again next summer.
Came here with a friend before a show at the Keller. Due to covid outside seating with a truncated meanie was all that was available. EVERYTHING that we had from the menu (appetizers, main course and dessert) was spot on with full flavor and presentation. The waiters were friendly and knowledgeable. Can’t wait to come back and try again. Higgins doesn’t disappoint.
Disappointing and many steps down form last time I was their several years ago. Overpriced for what was a mediocre food and drink experience.
Higgins used to be one of my favorite restaurants downtown but I was very disappointed in our recent experience.
A beautiful outdoor setting, and the consistently delicious quality food I am come to expect from Higgins year after year.
So wonderful to experience Greg Higgins’ wonderful food in such a lovely setting.
We were disappointed with the quality of the dishes we ordered at this price point. The paper plates may be convenient but also are lacking relative to the cost. Price and quality simply do not match well.
The setting is superb on a nice evening.
The Duck Confit sandwich is a revelation!
Awesome menu! Great place to relax in the early autumn.
Higgins website did not specify that all dining occurred around the corner in the Piggins cart space. The menu was limited. However, the charcuterie board was excellent as usual. Our server was inattentive. We were disappointed based on past experience dining in the restaurant.
This review is for Piggins, the outdoor space on the upper patio of the Oregon Historical Society. It’s important to know this is the casual, COVID makeshift space for Higgins, so it’s not as ‘fancy’ as the indoor restaurant. Food is served on a combination of paper plates and ceramic, and you’ll be sitting on outdoor plastic chairs. The space is nice in the sense that it is elevated off the street, and shaded by the big trees of South Park Blocks—it’s just not as elegant as the food.
But the food. Wow. This restaurant has been on my list since arriving in Portland 2 -1/2 years ago, but somehow (thanks COVID), I’d never made it to Higgins/Piggins before. I am a new convert! I had the Heirloom Tomatoes and Burrata, and their burger. Both were delicious. I’ve had a lot of grass-fed burgers, but the Piggins burger is exceptional. One of the best I’ve ever had! Just from these 2 dishes, you easily get the sense that it’s all about the ingredients. The flavors were 5 star.
I’m looking forward to dining in the Higgins restaurant, to get the full experience of ambience + food. BUT…the food AND the service were excellent, so I’ll definitely be back. A special shout-out to John, our waiter, who has been with Higgins since it started 27-1/2 years ago. He was on it, and made the dinner even better. Overall…go!
We took guests who had never been there, and they were amazed at the quality of the food, and the attentiveness of the staff. The starter, Charcuterie, was share-able for 4 people, and the variety of items was amazing. We'll be back!
When it is a nice weather day, lunch and dinner at Piggins is great. Nice venue, great food and beverages, and great service.
Higgins food in an outdoor setting on blue sky summer evening. Perfect. The menu is more limited than their traditional but still varied and wide ranging. A new take on an old favorite.
The outdoor tables gave a « cafe » ambiance. Food was very good and the service was just as we wanted. We had a Reuben on a GF bun and an appetizer salad, which was meal-size. Definitely recommend going!
Higgins is consistently excellent across the board. The charcuterie was spectacular. As was the entrees. Service is extremely attentive yet not rushed. Highly recommend.
Excellent flavored sauce with the prawns. I would get it again if they have it.
Absolutely the best outdoor dining in Portland! You can’t beat the ambiance or the food and gracious service. Get over there while the season lasts!
A delicious lunch, helpful servers and a beautiful day for lunch outside with friends at Piggins. So happy they are able to serve outside in such a pleasant space.
Another great meal at Higgins. Sirloin and zucchini fritter entrees. Great wine pairings. Perfect c
The outdoor area was nice but the food and service was not even close to the normal Higgins experience - yet the price was.
