Higgins Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
The service was just fine, but the oyster 'Po Boy (one of my favorite sandwiches of all time) was extremely disappointing. On a very large roll were only three fried oysters. The sauce was underportioned (for my taste, as the messiness of a 'Po Boy is part of the joy) and the slaw on the top bun was dry. The vegan pureed parsnip soup was under seasoned to the point of utter blandness.
Stopped in for lunch and wanted to experience the old school of Portland... great creativity in the menu... soups that warm you and create sunshine even in Portland!!
Salads a reasonable size and the mains use local ingredianets with great flavor and locally sourced.
I have a lot of food sensitivities that makes it quite challenging to go out to dinner. The chef was wiling to cook something special for me using the very flexible combination of all available ingredients listed in the menu. It was not only a healthy meal for me, but it tasted terrific!
Higgens is quintessential fine Portland dinning with a European feel. The staff are top notch and very professional. More intimate, quaint vibe. The bar has old world charm and some of the best selection of European and local beers on tap. We really impressed out out of state business guests.
Higgins used to be really good, but this time the menu was really not very appetizing and not very special. The food was OK but not worth the price; several of us felt that we would have dined better elsewhere. Get it together guys...we'd love to come back but we'll need to see some changes in the menu...back to basics please.
We've been dining at Higgins for 10-15 years. They accommodated our special request with ease and friendliness. Our only off-comment was that the main course food was just warm; it should have been much higher temperature, and the plates hotter, too. Service was great, and dessert a delight.
We were promptly seated, having arrived 10 minutes early. The wait staff knew exactly what they were doing and we could tell they were all professional. Cozy ambience. Tables placed at good distances from one another, for easy conversation. We ordered the two seafood specials: fresh rock fish and fresh Alaskan cod. Both were complimented with luscious sauces and correctly cooked sides. Excellent in all ways. We will return here on our next trip to Portland
Had heard such wonderful things about Higgins but was very dissapointed.
Room was very pretty and service was good but felt rushed. As soon as we sat down, we were told the specials before even ordering a drink. We got our drinks and were asked if we were ready to order. Once we ordered, the appetizers came too fast and then the dinner immediately after we were done with the first course. I had a pasta dish which was delicious but was not hot- barely warm. The cod was ordered by another in our party was quite tasty but the potion was tiny. The flat iron stake was amazing. The vegetarian dish was listed as dumplings, but there were no dumplings. The meal was very good but not as described.
We didn’t order dessert and then immediately given the check without having asked for it.
It was not the dining experience I had expected.
Greg is a gem. The staff includes several people who have been with him since he opened. That says a lot about the character of a restaurateur. The food is consistently great, seasonal and local. There are a few constants on the menu, but seafood stew and mussels, while always available, are given fresh treatments throughout the year. This place is a favorite.
I had dinner here with 2 business associates and the service was excellent. The waiter was very patient with us us we were having a long conversation. We ordered the fresh tuna and it was delicious. One of us ordered the fish stew and his remark is that it was very fresh. The salad starter could have been a meal in itself.
We waiter brought us sample of the 2 wines before we ordered the bottle.
Excellent restaurant and I will definitely return on my next trip to Portland.
Our table was ready when we arrived and the staff while attentive were available should we ha e required them. The food was served and presented well. There was an appropriate amount of time between courses and there was only a $10 fee for cutting and serving our own cake. A very pleasant experience.
We have been dining at Higgins for years and it never gets old. It remains one of Portland's best restaurants. They always use the best seasonal, fresh ingredients and whether they are serving an old favorite like the fish stew or something they just created that evening, the flavors are amazing. The service is sharp and friendly. We just love this place!
We really enjoyed our evening at Higgins. The wait staff was superb, the setting cozy and we did not feel rushed at all. I can't think of a restaurant where I've been recently where the wait staff made me feel so welcome. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu, wine, etc and did a good job of going over the specials. The food was certainly good, though I wasn't as overwhelmed by the food as I was by the atmosphere and service. Loved the fact that it was relatively quiet and we were able to talk. Sadly, that's often not the case in even fine dining establishments. We'll be back.
