Higgins Restaurant & Bar
The restaurant food did not meet the expectations of what I had heard or read about Higgins, I would not eat there again.
The food and service were impeccable. Attention to detail with the food was next level. Never disappointed from appetizers, to main course, to desserts. Even choices of draft beer was outstanding. The Shea wine with dinner a delight.
Excellent Service for a very poor food quality.
Best lunch in Portland. The Higgins hamburger is the best in the city. Drinks are strong and meant for true Portland citizens.
“Pepper salsa verde” with pork was overpowering. Could not taste the pork.
Waiter poured first glass of sparkling water and Elk Cove pinto noir. The remainder of the meal I poured every glass - not expect this lack of service from this establishment. Had to ask for an ice bucket for the champagne - really?
Have enjoyed Higgins since the year it opened. I am hopeful that this is not indicative of where this great restaurant is headed?
Very nice service and good food, along with a great spicy Bloody Mary for a couples birthday dinner.
John, our server, made our evening PERFECT! Lovely table for two next to the window started us out with a big smile. John followed up with impeccable service paired with divine offerings from the chef. Perfection!
They accommodated a huge group at last minute (17 of us!) and were extremely helpful. Good and service was fantastic. Everyone in my group raves about it!!
Wonderful meal with freshest NW ingredients. Ate in the Back Room, which has warm, cozy feel and very attentive service from outstanding, long term wait staff. Kennedy was our waiter, and she was fabulous. Enjoyed fresh Chinook salmon and rib eye steak. Lovely burrata salad and excellent wine from Walla Walla Valley. Amuse bouche and dessert were on the house, in celebration of our anniversary. Extensive wine/beer/spirit list with many local and international options. A long time favorite of ours, and a place we will visit again and again. A Portland institution not to be missed!!!!
Very lovely - will return!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We had a delicious meal, the heirloom tomato buratta was exquisite. It's meant to be shared. My partner had duck with huckleberry sauce, he felt it rivaled his favorite duck from the Vermont Inn in Killington, Vermont. I had the salmon special. Yum. We opted for Tom Collins drinks instead of wine...our hotel was serving them earlier in the night...and staying with that theme rounded out the meal. Ended with a BlackBerry peach crumble. Life doesn't get much better.
Not a fluke that this place has been in business for as long as it has and that the staff, many original, are all still here serving wonderful cuisine to its old and new patrons. Had the Tomato burrata salad, Salmon special, and the duck, all exceptional, and paired up well with our Domaine Drouhin Pinot. Would absolutely come back here and highly recommend this to anyone visiting Portland. Another plus was it’s just a pleasant walk from the Nines Hotel!
Excellent restaurant for a special occasion! Expensive but mostly worth the cost.
Food was delicious and service was top notch. The chocolate moose was the best I have ever had.
Enjoyed the in season heirloom tomato salad and regular menu duck. Food was delicious. John our server was a delight and offered three very good wine pairings to compliment the meal.
We were delighted with the staff who greeted and seated us in the Bistro. Gin & Tonic was to die for. Each selection was cooked and plated perfection, and the portions were just right. Desserts were tempting, but we were sated. The lights were turned down during our meal, and it wasn’t until we stepped out that we understood why—so people didn’t step out from bright interior lights to night blindness on the sidewalk.
Higgins has great chefs! It was my husband’s pick for his birthday dinner. His salmon was the best we have had— cooked to perfection. I had zucchini fritters with balsamic rice and tzatiki. The dinners were presented artfully.
Our waiter was charming and very attentive. They brought my husband a free desert. The busboy was on top of keeping our water glasses full and cleared away our plates as soon as we were done with the course so we didn’t have to sit with a dirty plate.
Now the negatives: Higgins in hands down the noisiest restaurant we have eaten at even though it was a Tuesday night. We had last come here to celebrate our daughter’s graduation from Reed and she is now 40 so it has been awhile. It is noisy to the degree that it is quite difficult to hear the person across the table. Maybe our hearing has gone down hill but I had to ask my husband to repeat just about every thing he said. For the cost of all items on the menu, there is a charge for bread with olive oil which is nice with one’s salad. Well at least choosing not to pay extra for bread left us with room for desert. To be honest, I am evidently picky. The cost of bread was a nominal $2.50 but on principal we decided not to order it. The other pricing surprise is that we had to pay an additional $2.50 per salad for crumbled blue cheese on them— butter lettuce and julienned carrot strips so blue cheese is always nice on a simple salad.
Our two meals, plus one glass of Chardonnay came to a little over $100. Final assessment: I’d rather pay more and get items included that other restaurants just provide such as bread and blue cheese crumbles on the salads. Not much difference between $100 and $110. The restaurant was filled and we’d come back for an early dinner or lunch next time.
Higgins is my neighborhood go-to restaurant, and it never disappoints.
Went to Higgins before a concert at the Keller Auditorium. We are not from Portland and found this restaurant in a guide book. We were not disappointed! The food was delicious and the service was amazing!! It's a little pricey, so definitely save this as a "go-to" for special occasions.
Food was great - we had the duck and rockfish special. Service was awesome, friendly and professional. Yet I did not love there ambiance, old fashioned and elegant but I felt not a place for younger folk.
Whenever we are in Portland we have dinner at Higgins - never been disappointed. We just got back from Depoe Bay area and had dinner at a very “prestigious”?? Restaurant and it’s didn’t come close to Higgins. We love Portland and we love Higgins!!
Inspired cuisine. Adventurous use of spires and herbs. Comfort food options and new ideas. Everything perfectly fresh.
It isn't cheap eats, but MAN the flavor packed into their food is Amazing. I've been a number of times, and this last one was a bit noisier than I'd have liked but it died down rather quickly and our server made us feel at ease right off the bat. The atmosphere is traditional Portland (if you were here in the 90s this will feel like home) and the seasonal menu always has something for every palette. Higgins has never let me down over the course of the last decade plus, and I will continue to go there for my special occasions. They're Awesome!
The albacore was amazing!! Such a great summer test, food is delicious and portions are big.
I would not go again! The food was not that great at all, my husband s dish was nothing as described. We had a great salad and one great wine, other than that we didn’t enjoy much of anything. The waitress was very nice.
Great food, service great deal old restaurant hasn’t changed its values in years and yes it’s perfect
Wonderful wood paneled dining room with excellent service and delicious food. Highly recommend.
Fantastic Chinook Salmon, delicious Ciopino, and a very nice dry French rose from Provence. Delightful service. We did not taste, but an extensive beer list was presented.
Excellent food and service. Highly recommend.
Wonderful spot to grab a nice white table cloth lunch in Downtown Portland!
Wonderful experience all around!!!
A wonderful overall dining experience. Excellent, attentive service with perfect timing, outstanding food that is artfully presented. Could not be happier!
Outstanding food and service start to finish. Great salads to share, Greek seafood stew, salmon.
The menu was excellent, with many great choices. The food was cooked and prepared excellently (the salmon was soooo smooth and creamy), and the service was correspondingly excellent. The dish portions were good (not skimpy). Other patrons were noisier than I'd expect from this classy a place, and it was difficult to talk to each other without speaking loud enough for other tables to hear, but otherwise we loved it!
Server brought the bottle of wine but didn't open it. Had to flag someone. Steaks were a bit too charred on the outside for medium well. Given the prices, we expect perfect. Everything else was great - various fish, soup, and salad dishes and fresh bread nicely done. Wine list good, although our selection of a Caymus chardonnay was out.
Higgins has been one of my favorite Portland restaurants for years. Service top notch and food quality is exceptional. Higgins was on the forefront of the farm to table movement and uses incredibly fresh and seasonal ingredients. The wine list and drink menu are also topnotch. I highly recommend it for any event, including business lunches and dinners.
Great dishes made from fresh local ingredients. Waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful.
One of the best pieces of salmon I’ve ever eaten. Food was fantastic and the longtime waiter was attentive and perfect. Love this restaurant.
Great food with incredible service.
We celebrated our wedding anniversary at a dinner for the two of us, and it was wonderful. The food was excellent - perfectly prepared - and the service was very attentive. This was our third time eating at Higgins, and we have enjoyed it every time. I had the smoked salmon salad & the Thai curry soup (soup of the day). My husband had lamb. We also shared the baretta appetizer, which is excellent. Higgins also has a good wine list, and the bread is delicious. Highly recommend.
