Higgins Restaurant & Bar
Higgins restaurant is as always dependably delicious and creative. We went to celebrate my husband's birthday and had a lovely evening.
The service was excellent. The skirt steak was very good. The fisherman’s stew was served on a bed of pesto which as cold so all of the seafood was cold and did not have as much taste as I would have liked. Also the croutons were a mismatch with the potatoes. The strawberry shortcake was excellent. The rhubarb cobbler was delicious but was dry needed more cream and I was charged when I asked for more. I thought that was petty. Overall, the meal was not as good as I remembered from previous visits to this restaurant when the food was more hot and hearty.
Visiting Vancouver for a work conference & decided to cross into Portland for dinner. We had a party of 7 - our table was ready when we arrived and we were able to immediately relax and enjoy our time. The staff were gracious and accommodating. The food was amazing. Of the 4 days we were there, Higgins was by far our best experience
We took a sizeable group to Higgins. The reservation was made for 12 and we wound up at 18; Higgins staff seamlessly addressed. Food was outstanding as usual- and everyone at the table was served within a couple of minutes of one another. Cannot speak highly enough of the staff's professionalism, the level of service- and as always the quality and thoughtfulness of the menu and food.
Bar was GREAT, but reserved seats in bar only occur on Saturday night. Service was really good - better than what we’ve had in restaurant.
Very accommodating. Delicious fresh food and great cocktails!
Kami was fantastic. So helpful in making menu selections and very friendly. The food was delicious and beautifully presented.
This enduring high end Portland restaurant has maintained a stellar reputation due to its elegant refined setting, excellent dishes using local ingredients in creative ways. On this visit we thoroughly enjoyed the duck with rhubarb. We loved two Fresh Oregon strawberry desserts, one nestled is a chocolate tart and the other accompanying pistachio pound cake. It was a special occasion for us and we were treated royally.
What can one say about one the best Portland restaurants? A James Beard award winning chef that is consistently great. The amazing fact is, this restaurant as been at the top for years. That is rare.
Classic old school but excellent restaurant in downtown Portland. Excellent fish and top notch service.
Always a favorite for my wife and me...the overall experience is well worth stopping by for when we are in the downtown Portland area.
We already have recommended you to two people we know. One couple said, our Granddaughter works there from time to time. She's a student wo studies nearby.
Our waiter's name was John. From Sydney, I think. He, and the lady who kept us served with water and came by to see if everything was going well, together with the superb meal, made this an evening to remember for a long time.

My favorite go to Portland restaurant. Highly recommend it
I had the halibut which was excellent but my husband had a ribeye steak which was very poor quality. It was at least 1/4 grisetle and tough all the way through. We should have said something to the waiter but we chose not to complain. Given the prices, Higgins needs to check the quality of their meat cuts more closely.
We were spending the weekend in Portland and enjoyed Saturday dinner at Higgins. Great service, food and atmosphere. They always make you feel welcome. Excellent wine list. It's one of our go-to restaurants for lunch and dinner in Portland.
Excellent food and service in a setting that is polished but comfortable.
Excellent service. Food much better tasting (and simpler) than described. Menu still too complicated-many items listed for each dish needed an explanation. Server was at least very knowledgeable and could answer the questions. Environmental noise is uncomfortable at times. Too bad for such an elegant restaurant. A Portland dining landmark we will always return to but an expensive one we visit infrequently.
We had eaten here several years ago and it was excellent which is why we returned. The food was disappointing. We ate in the bar side which afforded us a quieter table. The service was great. We won’t be coming back which is sad as we had such fond memories of our last visit.
It may be a bit old school, but it's a cool old school. Go. You'll like it.
Good lunch venue if you are looking for more of a fine dining flare. Linen table cloths. Attentive staff. Good wine selection. Impeccable service. Duck confit foccacia was innovative and delicious.
The food was lovely and our server Dave was outstanding!
Higgins has always been one of my favorite places to bring special guest from out of town. Foodies from New York and Tokyo always enjoy the Northwest Farm-to-Table specials at Higgins, and there is alway something great on the menu for vegetarians, pescatarians, and red meat eaters. The server are always exceptional and work hard to create an intimate experience. So, last Thursday night was true to form!
We’ve been coming here for 25 years. The food and service never disappoint and this continues to be our all time favorite restaurant in Portland with our all time favorite server, John. Thanks for making our 24th anniversary (and many others before this) so special.
Limited menu selection and very pricey. Service great. Ordered appetizer and left hungry. Went on a recommendation. Should have looked at menu and prices. My fault.
Higgins was suggested to us by the bartender in our hotel. It proved to be an excellent recommendation. We made a reservation and when we arrived we were promptly seated. Our waiter, Pauly, cheerfully greeted us and took good care of us all night long. His recommendations were spot on, from the food to wine to the dessert. We couldn't have been happier. We will definitely return to Higgins the next time we are in Portland.
I had asked for Dining reservations but only bar seating was available. It is an entirely different dining experience and not what I had in mind for a dinner with our guests. Similarly, if I wanted an informal bar-type light dinner, I wouldn't want to be switched to the dining room. Both restaurants are good, they are just not compatible.
We equate Higgins Bar to neighborhood bars in European cities - great food, ambiance and professional service. The menu changes with the season and yet still provides signature dishes year round that are always delicious. What more could a diner want?
Higgin’s continues to change up there vegetarian options which are always very interesting
Great beer list. I would highly recommend going to the bar here.
Higgins has maintained a high standard for more than twenty years. Never twice the same but uniformly excellent.
We had high expectations and were very disappointed. We had a table of 8. The food took over an hour to arrive and we were all very hungry. We were ALL still hungry after we had cleaned our plates. The portions were very small, except for the pasta dishes. The entrees were also very expensive. I will never go there again, nor will anyone else in our party.
Over priced and over rated.
Waiter was good, but busy requiring an effort to get his attention.
Superior, creative and authentic Northwest cuisine in an elegant setting. We eat here every time we come to Portland. The first time was in 2001. We have never been disappointed with the quality of the food, the service, or the overall experience. The restaurant has not lost s beat.
Everything was fine. There was nothing special about the experience though.
Food tended toward bland, service tended toward disinterested.
Vibe was that of a retirement home on puppy day.
Had a great server which helped us enjoy the entire evening. Great food too.
The original farm-to-market restaurant of Portland. Food is always excellent.
Have dined here multiple times and never had a "bad" meal. However, the place is getting tired. The menu is fairly limited, the carpet is worn, attention to details of cleaning need help, staff needs to spruce up. Seems relying on a great dining location is helpful, but not the be all, end all to bring us back again.
They did a fabulous job of getting us taken care of prior to the event that we were going to. Really impressive wait staff. And great food.
Always reliable. Local, in season dishes. Willingness to split orders. Good value wine list. Despite splitting dishes, the total cost was a b it of a surprise.
Waitress was focused, fun and quick with humor! Congrats on having such amazing employees!
