Hickory Lane American Bistro offers an eclectic aspect to American classics by adding international ingredients and flavors to give Philadelphia diners a new and unusual experience. With artisan-crafted sandwiches, chef specialties and appetizers on the menu, it would be difficult to leave Hickory Lane American Bistro unsatisfied.
One of the unique sandwiches is the duck �Rachel� which includes a house cured duck pastrami, cabbage slaw, gruyere cheese and 1,000 Island aioli on toasted sourdough. It is served with sweet potato fries and a pickle. Another house specialty is the Scottish salmon which is served with garlic spinach, cilantro jalapeno cream and quinoa. There are a number of vegetarian options on the Hickory Lane American Bistro menu as well.
The veggie burger was unusual and was one of the best I have had in a restaurant.

The burger was delicious and pulled pork was savory.
The food was excellent and our server, Harrison, was outstanding. He was courteous, attentive and very pleasant. We would go back.

My daughter has been coming here for breakfast often and so finally I had a chance to try it out. I really like the quaintness and the location. The staff was exceptionally nice, everyone was pleasant & greeted us upon entry and exit. I had the blueberry French toast with a side of eggs and turkey bacon. The French toast was delicious, the eggs were, eggs and the turkey bacon could've been cooked a little longer. My daughter had the shrimp and grits. The shrimp were huge, I wasn't a fan of the grits, they were too thick and lumpy for my taste. I'm not sure I'll be as frequent a visitor as my daughter, but there were a couple of other items that I would like to give a try.

If you're looking for a quick and casual brunch spot in Fairmount with great food and good service check out Hickory Lane. I've eaten outside a few times, they usually have tables available and it's never too crowded. They have good options for picky eaters, as I am not the adventurous type. And they're helpful in allowing you to take out something you don't like or add something you do like (small fee depending on what you're adding).
Good meal with nice wait staff in a comfortable environment. One big negative however is that they refuse to stock any decent scotch Whisky
The meal was very good. However, I almost lost my guest waiting for the tart dessert. Much too long. Wine list is VERY limited. Need a most extensive choice for full bottles.

This is a very pretty restaurant- in an area which is growing, and quite walkable. We'd gone for brunch here several years ago, (had a great experience) and were looking forward to showing our our of town friends a nice place/special dinner.
Our dinner came to ~$200- so one would expect that the basics would be there. The food was ok- drinks ok- but the water needed filtration (awful.. and we are from Philadelphia) and the after dinner decaf tasted like a watery sanka from the 70's. Each ruined the taste of our lovely after dinner profiteroles! The restaurant was not crowded, and neither the server nor bartender were busy. Server, however, was quite polite and attentive.
It just seems like the quality has fallen off sharply since opening. Every restaurant has an off-night so we're willing to give the benefit of the doubt- but just an extra focus on the little things would have made the time with our guests so much more pleasant.
Thoroughly enjoy this local Fairmount eatery. Sunday brunch is terrific as is every day dinner. Service and staff are friendly and attentive. Always a good choice. In nice weather, wonderful to sit outside. Gets busy for Sunday brunch and may be a little boisterous if its packed, but its still a great place. Always a good neighborhood go to.
Some of the best French toast I've enjoyed in quite some time. Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Served with syrup on the side, you hardly need it, as the powdered sugar does enough. Topped with fresh strawberries and blueberries, in the middle of winter (HOW?), this is dessert for breakfast.
Mimosas are generous and light, large pours and large glasses, keeps the champagne flowing.
Pork Belly Eggs Benedict is generously sweet, savory, and oh so rich. The portions don't appear at first to be very filling, but a little goes a long way, particularly with those crispy house potatoes.
Recommendation: If you're going for brunch on a Sunday, they take reservations, and it's worth it!
Dined at Hickory Lane before but this time decided to "introduce" a better cuisine to our 6-yo granddaughter.
Being in the area didn't hurt either :)
While we had a 4:30 reservation, we got to HL slightly earlier. Although the kitchen was still closed we were greeted very warmly and seated immediately. Our waiter took our drinks order and gave us plenty of time to look over the menu.
5 mins after the kitchen was 'officially open' he took our order and was constantly attentive throughout the whole meal.
We started with the cheese plate, I then opted for Red Pepper bisque and the famous HL burger, while DW went for Duck Raechel and GD - Mac-n-Cheese

I was visiting my friend who just moved to Philadelphia and we found this spot on open table. It is situated in an up and coming part of Philly, close walk to the museum of art. I thoroughly enjoyed the eclectic menu and the friendly service.
We had the special--Fig french toast and the egg platter breakfast--we shared them both. My friend had a bloody Mary that turned out to have just the right kick to it--a bit spicy. We sat for a long time and the waitress was very friendly and most of all, they did not rush us out. The place is quaint and comfortable. It appears there a lot of locals that frequent this restaurant.
I highly recommend it for the food, service and ambiance.
Cocktails not great
Came here for brunch on a Sunday and it was somewhat chaotic. Tables are so packed together that the waitress accidentally spilled coffee on the jacket of the woman at the table next to us (they were about a foot away from our table so I can see how an accident like that could easily happen). The woman was flipping out the whole time and because she was practically sitting at our table it was very distracting. They packed way too many tables into this small place, but I can see why they needed to because the food was delicious and the french toast was out of this world. I would go back at a time that wasn't so busy to truly enjoy this spot.
Food was great. We showed up early for our reservation and they were very accommodating. Would definitely recommend to friends, and we'll be coming again.
Food was great, scallops perfect. Music selection and volume combo was IDEAL. Can't wait to come back. Price/taste/ambiance/service = COMING BACK A LOT.
My husband and I love going there for brunch and went back there for Easter brunch. We love their brunches. We also had a great waitress.
We've been here a few times for dinner and always enjoyed it - we were excited to try it for brunch. We found the menu heavy on breakfast/egg items and sweet items (french toast, etc.). My husband who wanted more lunch than breakfast was disappointed. They did have 3 sandwiches and one salad, but most of the menu was breakfast items. So go with that in mind. I had the eggs benedict and it was very good; our friend had the waffle, which I frankly thought was over-priced. One smallish waffle with a few stawberry slices on top for $10. Coffee was good and the service was very nice. Would go for an occasion, not just for the heck of it.
We were able to secure an outdoor table for brunch and the restaurant was most accommodating to allow us to keep the table even with part of the party running late.
We ordered and while the food was tasty the service was spotty. The food came out at all different times and we also had to wait 15 minutes for our check to be settled. Nevertheless the staff was friendly and the food was good.
We enjoyed Sunday brunch before heading off to the Phila Museum of Art, a 5 minute walk away. We've eaten here before, and I have to say, it was better the first couple of times we tried it. I had the Tex Mex poached eggs creation, and it was mostly tortilla chips coated in salsa, with a little chorizo as a base for 2 poached eggs. Don't think I'd get it again, but the 2 teenage boys dining with us enjoyed it! My bloody mary was really spicy, with too much black pepper. Nothing special. My husband enjoyed the duck hash, and the cherry french toast special looked fabulous! All in all, a little disappointing.
The French Toast on the brunch menu was awesome! The drinks for brunch are fun too and the outdoor seating is great for nice weather. It is a bit small inside so make a reservation ahead of time especially if you have a group larger than 4!
Had the burger and the wife had the chicken. Burger was good; however, I ordered it medium rare and it came out more medium. Drinks were fun!
Discovered this place when my Son and fiance and I were looking for a place for an afternoon snack after visiting Eastern State Penitentiary. Location - great. Good off street parking and a lot just a block away. Nice neighborhood with other eateries and shopping. Went back with my husband and daughter and everything was very good except for the waiter. The rest of the staff was as wonderful as the first time. He looked new and not so in tune with everything. Overall though I would definitely go back again.
We went to Hickory Lane for Valentine's Day it was just perfect. We were able to walk there from where we were staying which was an added bonus! Great cocktails and beer list. I had a sangria which was wonderful! I also had soup and salad and my husband had a sandwich. We loved everything. Great, fresh ingredients. Everything tasted really clean and simple and we didn't feel stuffed to the gills at the end of the meal because it was well prepared and not overdone.! We had some chocolate covered strawberries for dessert which was the perfect ending to a great meal! We will definitely go back next time we are staying in town.
Tables are too close together. Had to send drink back twice to get it the way we like it. Each time
they agreed with a smile. Great place overall.
In a city offering a number of great brunch spots like Sabrina's, Honey's, etc., Hickory was just fair. My husband had french toast, apparently a house specialty, which he described as "okay". I had an $11 omelette that was a bit rubbery, truly nothing at all special. I'm not a carb eater so it didn't matter that there was no bread offered and the small accompanying portion of potatoes seemed under-cooked. Coffee was ok but service was so poor everything, including the coffee, came out warm, at best. I practically had to beg for a second cup as the waitress was busy conversing with other staff rather than watching out for customer needs. The experience overall was like that we might expect from a par to sub-par local diner. The hostess was welcoming, but interestingly called to confirm our reservation less than 10 minutes from the time we were due, finding us searching for a parking spot when she called. Just a bit odd, it seemed, esp. as the restaurant was almost empty for the first hour we were there. While I rated ambiance as good as it's generally attractive and might seem even nicer in warm weather, we were sitting next to a window and it was quite drafty. Layout is poor as food waiting for server pick-up is left unattended right at the front door where patrons enter and exit, grab coats, etc. Again, with so many proven options otherwise, we're not motivated to return.
Definitely a must-try for anyone looking for a new place. The cocktail list is seasonal and the wine list had a nice variety. My friend and I shared the cheese tray, which was good-sized and presented a range of artisan cheeses. Our server was friendly and accommodating and didn't mind that we lingered a bit over the appetizer. As for the entrees, I had the tagliatelle pasta with chorizo and sundried tomatoes and my friend had the steak, both of which were really good. And we split an apple tart that came out warm and tasted like it was baked especially for us. So glad we went - I'm looking forward to visiting again!
I had never been to Hickory Lane Bistro and figured I would give it a try. I am really glad I did. I went there for brunch on a Sunday. The food was very fresh and they do a great poached egg (which can be quite difficult to pull off correctly). I also liked the ambiance and "sunny bistro" feel. I can't wait until the weather warms up so I can sit on their front patio area. I will definitely return!
Smokey Mac n cheese was delicious. The pasta was good too. Loved the restaurant week menu!
Food was not good. Served quickly but cold somehow. Won't be a return visit. Waitress was nice though.
Good value for restaurant week food, BUT if you cook the salmon before the patron is ready all the edges will dry terribly. The part that was not overcooked was very good, so it was a disappointing waste. Service was excellent and front of house kind. We return to try them again, but wishing there was consistency here.
We had a later night reservation .... 8:15 .... for 5 on a Wednesday evening. There were other seats but our 5th person was seated at the head of the table literally IN THE AISLE of traffic. Not a good way to start of dinner. Server was excellent and the food came up quickly. I was not impressed with the food at all. The onion soup was way too salty and truly disappointing. Burgers were good but overpriced. I have always wanted to try this in the Spring for the outside seating. Probably will pass.
Went during the first few inches of Storm Jonas. The food was delicious and waitstaff was attentive. Both ordered the burger--it is good! Definitely wanted us to leave (it was 10:00 and the storm was picking up) after we paid, despite still having to finish our drinks. Would go back--but for brunch and during warmer weather.
