Located in Ballard's historic Firehouse No. 18 built in 1911, the Hi-Life serves up a quarterly rotating American Grill menu that features the best of the four seasons here in the Pacific Northwest. With an emphasis on seasonal ingredients and brick oven, our line turns out tasty, full-flavored foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner each and every day.

Cool environment, it was an old fire station, with casual dinner menu and good cocktails. Service was slow and we didn't see our waitress for quite awhile after being seated. Then she checked in repeatedly on us to order. We ordered 2 orders of ribs on a Friday night and about 15 minutes after we ordered, she returned to tell us they only had 1 order of ribs left. They also lost my friends pizza ordered. The manager nicely took the pizza off our bill but it was very odd for a Friday night when the place was not packed. I think I will try other places in Ballard for next time.
Normally this is a great place to eat, but I've seen the quality of the food decline recently. The lamb sliders were overcooked. I get they are small (actually small even by slider standards), but cooking them past well done is unforgivable. My LDC had the vegetarian plate. She asked if it was spicy and the server said it was more sour and not spicy at all. The vegetables were either too hard to eat, too spicy for her, too bland, or a combination of these. I've never had pickled butternut squash, but if this is any indication, it should never be done. It was not softened in the least. Imagine slicing a squash to about 1/4 inch and dousing it in spicy vinegar for a few minutes. Not sure if we'll be going returning again.
Our server was rude and completely not attentive. Half of the food was brought 10 minutes before the rest and it was served cold. Not even room temperature, I mean cold. The manager fixed everything but the server was so rude it just felt like a huge fiasco. There was very much a feeling that we were putting them out wanting water and hot food.
My husband and I went for the Sunday night fried chicken dinner. It was phenomenal. The chicken was perfectly cooked with a tasty crispy batter. It was served with homemade mashed potatoes, carrots, and a light gravy. It's upscale comfort food. Our server was friendly and efficient. We both enjoyed the meal and will definitely go back! The only negative was a very large party next to us that insisted upon standing between our tables instead of sitting in their seats to converse. They were loud and distracting and in everyone's way.
Had a party of 9 for my wife's birthday. Made the reservations the day before, and our table was ready for us at 7:45pm on Saturday evening, absolutely no wait whatsoever. The service was exceptional, the food was good, the ambiance was nice and the music wasn't too loud (which is a hard thing to find, in my experience). Would happily go back for a group or one-on-one.
Really disappointed. This was my 3rd time here and I had a pleasant time at the other 2. The food was burned or overcooked so we had to send 2 things back, but should have sent 1 or 2 more back. She shoved the bill in my face before I had my second bite of my meal even though we noted we were there for a birthday and wanted desert. We ordered coffee and had to wait 30 minutes because they had already started cleaning the machine at 9PM on a Friday (with lots of other tables). The bill was wrong so I sent it back to take the extra wine off and it came back with automatic gratuity because she was afraid of not getting a tip after making so many mistakes. When I asked her about it (nicely - I swear!) she cried! Now all my friends are asking me why I am so mean and I feel like a total jerk. I just didn't want to pay for wine I didn't have!! Manager never came over to see what was going on with clearly a mess of a situation. None of us will ever go back. Really the worst dining experience I think I have ever had.
It took 65 minutes for us to receive our meals after ordering and the restaurant wasn't even that crowded. The food was unnecessarily spicy- something called a squash goat cheese pizza should not make my eyes water with every bite. It's a cool venue but slow service and mediocre food.
We came for a family dinner over the weekend. Overall, mediocre food, expensive for what you get. Roasted vegetable salad was bland. Indifferent service and the high ceilings and wood everywhere make for a very loud atmosphere. I definitely would not recommend for dinner.
Love Hi-life happy hour and have been going there consistently for the past 2 years. I just recently found out we could make reservations and now hi-life has won me over completely! This is my absolute favorite place!! Their mac and cheese is perfection and you get a huge bowl full for $4 thanks to happy hour.
Great food and nice atmosphere. We had a good experience despite having to send the steak back to the kitchen for proper cooking. The management was very responsive and worked with the kitchen to get our order right very quickly. All the staff was friendly and helpful.
Because it was a Saturday night we chose this to avoid a wit. We needed somewhere to go but not too late without a wait. The menu was limited especially for people who are looking to dine on seafood. There are much more choices available but seems they are busy, especially on the weekends. Worked for us in a pinch.
We are one-time Seattle residents who now live in Oregon, and we wanted to take my in-laws out for a nice meal. I did a quick search for Kid-friendly restaurants near our hotel, made reservations, and showed up a few minutes early. We were seated almost immediately, and the service was great for the whole night! My five year old loved her salmon- she ate the whole thing, which is unbelievable! My two year old ate most of her hamburger- it was a super good burger for a kids meal! And my king salmon was AMAZING. We all shared dessert, which was delicious, and even my foodie in-laws were impressed with the meal!
Hi-Life was off the night we went. My food, supposedly ribs, was like a pot roast. My husband's dinner was poorly prepared. They give kids cookies to decorate and they get them at the end of the meal. One of the two cookies at our table was burned. How do you tell a child that the desert he was looking for wasn't edible? That was bad. They do have cute kids menus -- stuff to do while waiting for food. They had GF options and one, I think, vegetarian option. Overall, our experience there was average. Not good, but average.
