Food had a unique & creative touch that makes them original and stand out on their own. Food was delicious. I was looking for something different but good for breakfast and we found the perfect place. Too bad we don't live near by.
Nice choice of food options. Delightful staff at the bar which is where we often choose to sit. We enjoy watching them as they hustle and bustle with smiles and occasional laughter. Quick friendly service of beverages and food.
Our waitress was great (sorry don't remember her name). I didn't know what I wanted to eat and asked her about 4 things on the menu. She recommended the clams and ahi tartare off the small menus and I couldn't have been happier. Both were delicious! She had a huge table near us, for an engagement party but we never felt neglected.
We went for the Sunday fried chicken dinner and it was fantastic. The chicken was crispy with just the right amount of spice, the mashed potatoes were great, and we got carrots as the vegetable and they were cooked to perfection. Also, the service was fantastic.
Our server was spectacular. She had great recommendations and a wonderful attitude and sense of humor!!! Food was fabulous!!!
Good casual dining in great old building, with old bar and neighborhood feeling. Food is good, but not great, some imagination in menu.
Food was good. Service ok. Sold my email address and now I can’t stop the spam! That leaves the ultimate bad taste in my mouth......
My kids love this place because of the make-your-own cookies. But, the last 2 times we've been, it has been so loud that it's hard to talk, and both times one of my kids got overwhelmed and wanted to leave early. This particular visit I was also a little annoyed that when my kids asked what kind of soft drinks they had, the server included not only the free ones on the kids menu, but also the bottled ones that cost $4 each. Of course my kids wanted the bottled ones, and we had to negotiate a compromise. This visit felt hectic and busy, and not particularly enjoyable, but I will probably be back since I've had better experiences in the past.
Cool environment, it was an old fire station, with casual dinner menu and good cocktails. Service was slow and we didn't see our waitress for quite awhile after being seated. Then she checked in repeatedly on us to order. We ordered 2 orders of ribs on a Friday night and about 15 minutes after we ordered, she returned to tell us they only had 1 order of ribs left. They also lost my friends pizza ordered. The manager nicely took the pizza off our bill but it was very odd for a Friday night when the place was not packed. I think I will try other places in Ballard for next time.
Loved the building and the history. The food was delicious .
We hadn't been here for a while and were reminded that we need to come more often. Our meals were very good—and compared to restaurants in the area—we found it very affordable.
Excellent food and service. We were there New Year’s Eve and had a blast. We sat close to the door. That spot was a little chilly. Will sit somewhere else next time.
My wife had flank steak. I had blackened pork and grits. We shared a small plate of gnocchi. All were great! Our server was fun and friendly. We will be back.
Normally this is a great place to eat, but I've seen the quality of the food decline recently. The lamb sliders were overcooked. I get they are small (actually small even by slider standards), but cooking them past well done is unforgivable. My LDC had the vegetarian plate. She asked if it was spicy and the server said it was more sour and not spicy at all. The vegetables were either too hard to eat, too spicy for her, too bland, or a combination of these. I've never had pickled butternut squash, but if this is any indication, it should never be done. It was not softened in the least. Imagine slicing a squash to about 1/4 inch and dousing it in spicy vinegar for a few minutes. Not sure if we'll be going returning again.
Our small office chose Hi-Life for our Holiday lunch. The food selection was diverse enough to keep everyone happy. The atmosphere, from the cool building to the chill clientele and the friendly wait staff made for a memorable and comfortable occasion.
Yummy food and farmhouse ambiance. My friend and I shared a couple of plates and it was just enough food. Highly recommend the ribs!
Our server was rude and completely not attentive. Half of the food was brought 10 minutes before the rest and it was served cold. Not even room temperature, I mean cold. The manager fixed everything but the server was so rude it just felt like a huge fiasco. There was very much a feeling that we were putting them out wanting water and hot food.
Went to the Sunday Chicken Dinner special. A great deal, the chicken was plentiful and delicious. There were plenty of side dishes that were great. The Sunday dinner has become a family tradition
My husband and I went for the Sunday night fried chicken dinner. It was phenomenal. The chicken was perfectly cooked with a tasty crispy batter. It was served with homemade mashed potatoes, carrots, and a light gravy. It's upscale comfort food. Our server was friendly and efficient. We both enjoyed the meal and will definitely go back! The only negative was a very large party next to us that insisted upon standing between our tables instead of sitting in their seats to converse. They were loud and distracting and in everyone's way.
Excellent midweek meal. Generous business who donates to local area nonprofits.
Reservations were easy on Open Table. Our table was ready when we got there, friendly competent help made us feel very welcome and the ample Sunday night chicken dinner was comfort food at it's best for our crowd of eight. We'll be back!
Hi-Life has been a standard for me when in the Ballard area for years. I particularly like the fried chicken dinner they hold on Sunday night as it is really good. Menu changes seasonally but not always the best for someone who has dietary limitations.
This restaurant is in a old fire station. Beautifully done, and the food is excellent. Great beer and cocktail selection. Also, the Sunday chicken dinner is legendary.
Had a party of 9 for my wife's birthday. Made the reservations the day before, and our table was ready for us at 7:45pm on Saturday evening, absolutely no wait whatsoever. The service was exceptional, the food was good, the ambiance was nice and the music wasn't too loud (which is a hard thing to find, in my experience). Would happily go back for a group or one-on-one.
Great good and love the firehouse building. Very friendly staff.
Really disappointed. This was my 3rd time here and I had a pleasant time at the other 2. The food was burned or overcooked so we had to send 2 things back, but should have sent 1 or 2 more back. She shoved the bill in my face before I had my second bite of my meal even though we noted we were there for a birthday and wanted desert. We ordered coffee and had to wait 30 minutes because they had already started cleaning the machine at 9PM on a Friday (with lots of other tables). The bill was wrong so I sent it back to take the extra wine off and it came back with automatic gratuity because she was afraid of not getting a tip after making so many mistakes. When I asked her about it (nicely - I swear!) she cried! Now all my friends are asking me why I am so mean and I feel like a total jerk. I just didn't want to pay for wine I didn't have!! Manager never came over to see what was going on with clearly a mess of a situation. None of us will ever go back. Really the worst dining experience I think I have ever had.
We always enjoy the Hi-Life--nice for an easy dinner with kids. The anaheim mac and cheese is fantastic. Good variety on the menu.
Great! Would definitely go back.
It took 65 minutes for us to receive our meals after ordering and the restaurant wasn't even that crowded. The food was unnecessarily spicy- something called a squash goat cheese pizza should not make my eyes water with every bite. It's a cool venue but slow service and mediocre food.
We came for a family dinner over the weekend. Overall, mediocre food, expensive for what you get. Roasted vegetable salad was bland. Indifferent service and the high ceilings and wood everywhere make for a very loud atmosphere. I definitely would not recommend for dinner.
Food just wasn't good. We tried two new seasonal items and two every day items. All were underwhelming at best.
Love Hi-life happy hour and have been going there consistently for the past 2 years. I just recently found out we could make reservations and now hi-life has won me over completely! This is my absolute favorite place!! Their mac and cheese is perfection and you get a huge bowl full for $4 thanks to happy hour.
The best fried chicken dinner I have ever had. Highly recommended.
Love the food here. Love the fact that the menu changes quarterly, keeping it fresh
The menu is quite varied with lots of choices. Only complaint was the there were several noisy groups at the same time. No complaints about the place, food ,prices or service.
We came on a Tuesday for all night Happy Hour. Great food at even better prices! We also really enjoyed the history of the building!
Fantastic Fried Chicken on Sunday nights. Some of the best I've ever had.
Great food and nice atmosphere. We had a good experience despite having to send the steak back to the kitchen for proper cooking. The management was very responsive and worked with the kitchen to get our order right very quickly. All the staff was friendly and helpful.
Because it was a Saturday night we chose this to avoid a wit. We needed somewhere to go but not too late without a wait. The menu was limited especially for people who are looking to dine on seafood. There are much more choices available but seems they are busy, especially on the weekends. Worked for us in a pinch.
We took some friends who were visiting on a Tuesday night so we were able to sample from the all-day happy hour menu. We ordered way too much but the food was excellent. Paul, our server, was very helpful. We'll definitely go back again.
