The chocolate souffle was the highlight of our dinners. It was PERFECT with a warm custard sauce. We ordered sauteed sweet bread with some kind of wine sauce as appetizer. It was good. We ordered duck confetti with orange sauce and lobster tail & halibut served on white wine sauce. They had all met our expectations. The wait staff was attentive & wonderful. We are looking forward to our great meal at Hexagone.
There for 3pmish holiday meal. Half an hour between drinks and each of the 3 courses at a minimum. Had plenty of staff for the number of tables. Must not have a big enough kitchen to support the space. Price seemed fair for the menu. Food was very good. If I lived in the neighborhood I might come back, but I am not driving across town for it. Small kids would go crazy waiting for everything.
The place is pleasant, but our dinner was strictly so-so. We ordered the turkey dinner and the turkey was OK. The plate included a very tiny scoop of mashed potatoes, and a 1-inch piece of yams. The menu included cranberry sauce but it was not served. Service was virtually non-existent.
I ate lunch at this delightful restaurant last weekend to celebrate my birthday with family. It was the first time for all of us. Well, what a wonderful place. Our waiter, Donovan, served us impeccably. He was friendly, engaging and really made our visit special. We all ordered different meals and we all give the cuisine two thumbs up. Don't miss the lamb chops and the scallops.
Menus were completely inconsistent from one person to the next which got things off to a rough start. We had reserved a table but were given one in a high traffic area and away from all the windows. The fact that this location is close to the Old Globe Theatre and offers a free shuttle and free parking means we will probably come back. If you use a coupon, be sure to read the fine print.
Very disappointed!!! Service was rushed didn't even welcome us asked us what we wanted. My wife I said I would like to order a drink and he walked away from us. After 3 times I finally stopped him and said please we would like to order it is very frustrating because you keep walking away from us. We order the beef Wellington which was used with a sirloin rather than the filet. Not happy at all with the service and the food was not up to par. This place of capable of being great but the most important thing is the service which either makes or breaks a restaurant.
I visited this restaurant with a coworker at 6pm. We had no trouble getting into the restaurant or getting seated. Free parking was provided in an underground garage around the corner.
We both got the Beef Wellington, which was not on the menu but was a special they advertised on the website. My buddy also got the French onion soup. Bread and butter were provided shortly after the waiter took our drink order. We both got a glass of merlot.
The loaf bread was tasty. The soup looked great and my buddy said it was delicious. It seemed to be a very big portion. We both enjoyed our Beef Wellington. It was very obviously fresh cooked. The meat was oustanding--tender, juicy, beautiful color. The puff pastry was a beautiful golden brown. It was served with some carrots and asparagus, both of which were seasoned and cooked wonderfully. The sauce was the perfect companion for the dish.
The atmosphere was what you'd expect from a quiet, French restaurant near downtown. Nicely appointed, clean, candlelit. If I had know about this place sooner I would have enjoyed taking my wife there for Valentine's or our anniversary.
I recommend this restaurant for smaller groups or couples. I believe it was a great value.
We have been to Hexagone many times in the last few years, and the food never disappoints. It is a charming neighborhood bistro, with a pleasant but at times loud atmosphere. The service is always appropriate, tell them you are there for a leisurely dinner and they will allow you to enjoy your experience. On the other hand, let them know that you will be attending the theater and they will make sure everything is served with enough time to make the show without feeling rushed. My only criticism is that they do not seem to put much focus on their wine list. If you would like a very good bottle to accompany your dinner, I suggest you bring your own.
The restaurant was not a cheap place...But there were no hosts and looked all servers were busy, they were not even aware that I reserved... Bad impression already. And after having our table, the table cloth had some stains. Our server looked so busy all the time, and we needed to wait until he took our order. The food was not too bad, but absolutely not reasonable for the price. I will not come back here again.
You must try this establishment. The food is just great. Had the duck which was delicious and moist. Partner had salmon and enjoyed it just as much. We Always make a point to stop and eat at this restaurant when we are in San Diego. Try it you will not be disappointed.
Filet was tough, not tender. Dessert (chocolate with rouges) was not as advertised. Waited for at least 10 minutes after being seated for server to come to the table. Server was slow and inattentive through out the meal, even though the restaurant was not crowded. Big drop off in service without Jerry working!
We went on a Tuesday so it was not that crowded. Our server took care of us right away. I tried the Coq au Vin, which is basically chicken marinated in wine the whole night and my wife had the sirloin steak. The chicken was very good, but the stake was excellent. I will make sure to get that one next time. The waiter (French man), was nice and attentive.
Woud definitely recommend this place.
The ambience of the restaurant was nice, clean, and the service was great. Our server was very attentive and charming. However, the food was 3/5 stars, not the best and WAY overpriced. I would never pay full price for what we ate, and that definitely diminished our final impression of the place. Would not go again both because the food was only ok and because of the price.
We've been here a few times. Had the special prix fixe dinner, The duck leg was excellent, that's what got to the 4th star. The salmon, calamari, and even lobster bisque were good - not great.
It's a quiet place, and a generally older crowd.
Had a waiter raised in France, and he was excellent.
We love coming to Hexagone on our way to the Old Globe Theater. It's a nice stroll, and they also offer a shuttle service for dinner guests. I like the mix of customers -- happy old couples, starry-eyed lovers, long-time neighborhood regulars and out of town visitors. Everyone seems happy, comfortable, and pleased with the food. We especially like the lovely salads, and the happy hour in the bar area is a great deal.
The service was terrible. Waiter forgot us entirely after we received our menus and drinks. They took dinner orders from 6 other tables that arrived later than us, until we finally flagged the waiter down and asked him to take our order. The halibut with crab & shrimp was the special, at $34. But you get a tiny-tiny whole crab that you can work at for an hour with your fingers and utensils to get shells off and look for any crab meat and finally, maybe, get one bite of crab meat. Under that was a tiny puff pastry with one shrimp in it, with tail still on. So again, you cannot eat it with a fork or bite into the pastry & shrimp. Once I opened the pastry, pulled the tail off, I got one bite of shrimp. Then next to the 1-shrimp pastry was about 3 oz of halibut, that appeared slightly flour-breaded and fried..., about 3-4 bites of a tasteless fish. Overall, it was very unsatisfying and while I am a petite older woman with small appetite, I was left hungry, and ate when I got home. The woman next to me had to return her salmon meal and order the steak. Several other patrons did not seem very happy with their meals either! This place charges a lot and gives nothing of value.
Hexagone is one of our favorite restaurants in San Diego. Last night I had their special "John Dory with saffron sauce. It was excellent. From their regular menu, I recommend the Sea Bass with Mediterranean tapanade and the lamb chops. The frog legs are also very good.
