Hersh's Ratings and Reviews
We went with another couple, ordered four appetizers to share around, and sampled each other's entrees. This might be the only time in my 20+-year dining history around Baltimore that every single item was delicious and perfectly prepared. Our server was cheerful and helpful but not intrusive and recommended a great wine for the table. Hersh's is a Baltimore gem!
The food was good and the restaurant was quiet. I had high expectations because of the online ratings and friends experiences and I wasn’t disappointed, but I also wasn’t too impressed. The brussels appetizer was different than advertised online and slightly over cooked. The pasta was very good but small for 1 person if I didn’t have other food coming.
Pastas (all home-made) were excellent and we all liked the fact that they came in both small and large portions. The variety of appetizers and entrees was impressive and some were different than usually encountered. We all (party of 3) enjoyed our meals. A pizza to go also proved to be outstanding--great crust. Prices were more than fair, including the wines.
Only blip in the meal was the "Rockfish Soup"--never before encountered on a menu and much anticipated. Unfortunately, while the soup was tasty no fish pieces of any kind or size, not even shreds, were found in the entire bowl--none.
The service was good, as well as the ambience. Cauliflower appetizer was great, but the pizza arrived a bit lukewarm. The biggest negative was the noise level: music was loud, but guests nearby were extremely loud. The latter was not the restaurant’s fault, of course, but it made conversation difficult. A shame.
This is a great neighborhood restaurant with terrific pizza and pasta in Federal Hill. Although it was crowded on. Thursday evening, our table was ready on time. Our server was knowledgeable about both the menu and the beers on tap. It was a great night out.
Hersh's is great for sharing. As appetizers the four of us shared meatballs, shrimp, and fried sweet potatoes and shared two pizzas for our entree with a salad for one of us. Shannon, our server, was efficient and pleasant; but, as is often the case in restaurants today, was a little too eager to have us proceed with our order and not socialize too much.
