Herringbone - Santa Monica

$1 oyster Happy hour was great, the service...not so much.
Noisy, and overpriced.
Server didn't know who ordered what.
It's Not a diner :(
No substitutions at all, even to add a protein (shrimp or chicken to a salad. Kids not welcome, sadly. Hope these policies change as it holds promise.
Service was very good, crab cakes were good....not impressed by the flat bread, french fries were underwhelming......seafood pasta was good, not excellent.......too much salt on everything, was pounding the water later that evening
Great night - great service and food was good - and my date was happy which was the most important.
Beautiful interior, and service was decent. But the food was vastly overpriced. Even the signature "seafood pasta" was something I could have easily made at home; I was simply very unimpressed with the food. Unambitious and boring menu, although the oysters were good. If I'm going to spend $100 per person, I expect the food to be interesting and powerful, and this let me down substantially. We will not return.
When you go to a restaurant that has a premier chef associated with it you expect it to be great. We were very disappointed. Brian Malarkey has been one of our favorite chefs to watch on TV. "Malarkey serves as a judge on Food Network's Guy's Grocery Games, makes regular appearances on the Today Show and Good Morning America, and was a Top Chef finalist and winning mentor on ABC's The Taste, which he co-hosted alongside Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson and Ludo Lefebvre."
I'll start with the good. The service was very good, the waitress, Sommelier, even down to the busboy (even though he was a little too eager to clear the table taking things we weren't done with).
As for the food... that was a big let down. Everything was bland and needed salt. My wife and I started with the Caesar Salad. One of our big pet peeves with chefs is when they puss out and don't put the anchovies in the dish. One, if not the best, key component in a Caesar Salad is the anchovies. It was bland and just boring. My wife and I also ordered the Seafood Pasta. This too was bland and needed salt, lots of salt. My aunt ordered the Crab Cakes which I tried at her request which were also bland and uneventful. Another part of the meal that we thought was cheesy, was that they didn't provide bread for the table at the beginning, you had to buy that if you wanted some.
Overall I would not recommend Herringbone - Santa Monica or would I bother giving it another try. There are too many restaurants to try and too little time to try them. As a bit of advice to chefs who have a lot of restaurants and aren't always there to make sure the food is the caliber they demand, I would suggest making an incognito undercover visit once and a while to see what goes on when you're not there because I honestly don't believe that Mr. Malarkey would be happy with what we were served if he were judging it like he does on TV.
Absolutely love Herringbone! The food is fantastic and the service was wonderful! Our server was extra attentive and we never felt like we were waiting long or in need of anything. He was always checking in and refilling our drinks (bottomless brunch!). The decor in Herringbone is beautiful, too. What a beautiful spot to get together with friends and family!
Our waiter was great
It’s a beautiful place but we had a terrible experience in terms of the food. Cold pork chops even after we waited for them to serve a second time. terribly over- salted ceviche though it was gorgeous. Drinks that were so outrageously sample even I. Modern times. Big foodies- huge disappointment. Maybe it was a bad night.
Generally Herringbone is great- especially the weekday happy hour. I’ll chalk up the lapse to the Oscars.
Great experience for a party of 12. Amazing!
The service was impeccable. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was not all that great. First thing that happen was I had to keep the hostess from seating me right near the kitchen, when there were tables in open stations to spare. Next thing that happened was that someone opted to sit on the patio when the temperatures outside were below 50 degrees, so arctic wind blew into the main dining room every time someone needed to go outside to the patio. In regards to the food. The menu seemed to have diminished from the last time I was there, and the offerings were limited to oyster plates and oyster specialties. Other seafood had been available the last time I was there that did not center around oysters. I had a shrimp cocktail that was good for an appetizer and then a NY strip for my main course. I asked for Medium well. For some reason the chef thought that meant searing it on both sides and leaving it raw. As I talked to my dinner guest, I noticed her eyes got wide, and I looked down at my plate to find it full of blood from the steak. They took it back, and one server commented that I had asked for it rare. Thankfully our server, said no it was Medium well and when the other server checked the ticket, there is was. He walked off and got the manager, who brought back a brand new steak that was supposedly medium well. Half of it was, the rest was raw. I just put it to the side. The part that was done, had not been seasoned and was tasteless. I was glad the shrimp were okay. I cannot in good conscious recommend this place presently to anyone, but it was not for lack of trying on our servers part. She was awesome and dynamic, and really cared about patron happiness. It was nice to see.
It was a nice evening. Celebrating bdays .food was good. The whole thing was overall a good experience
Not as great as other locations I've been to...or maybe my memory is just more fond than the experience this time. Regardless, oyster hour is definitely worth while!!
Nice place... a little bit of a challenge for parking. good for a special occasions. Going to try happy hour next time
Food was fantastic, super foody and well done. Waiter was attentive, and did a fabulous job adjusting the wine to something that worked great with our meals.
Food was great, 2 of the 3 hostesses were rude
Had a great experience here! Love the ambiance and our server was great! My biggest pet peeve is customer service and our waiter Sal was attentive and very cool. Our food was perfect the fish was super fresh, we started off with the buffalo octopus and boy I was in for a surprise! It was amazing! For our entrees Sea Bass while my girlfriend had Branzino, and it was nothing short of great dining! We will definitely be back to try their happy hour as well as their brunch!
We were really happy with our brunch at Herringbone. It was easy to get a reservation, and the food was really yummy! And the coffee was the best part.
Despite being late to our reservation, the host was accommodating and service was fantastic. The food was quite delicious--from the popular sticky buns to the main course, topping it off with mimosas and bellinis--it was perfect. I would definitely recommend for small or large parties. Their indoor and outdoor dining are both equally bright and airy. The server even let us move tables after we were done with our meals, so we could enjoy the sunshine on the patio with our beverages. Will definitely return.
We had to wait over an hour for our table. It was very busy when we showed up for our reso and I fear we were lost in the shuffle. We were brought an appetizer in the cocktail area as a consolation prize, which was very nice, but nobody followed up. I had to go to the host stand to summon a busser to clear the table and a server to order more drinks. When we finally sat, our new server was very friendly and competent. We were gifted an oyster each, which was delicious. Everything was coursed out well. We had a Caesar, arugula salad, and flatbread to start, all great. Branzino was good, but the sea bass was overcooked. Serious bummer after waiting so long. I love that fish. I appreciate the friendliness of the staff very much, but not our best experience.
We enjoyed the place and the food apart from the receptionist that we found quite unfriendly and to some extent rude.
Herringbone was awesome - great brunch with a group! Yummy food, 👍🏻 Bloody Mary ! Trendy vibe, great service !!
There was no acknowledgement of my birthday even though I marked that as the dining occasion.
Great food and service. They were very accommodating for the kids in our group too.
Hostesses were weird. Meal was delicious but ended weak with cheap milk and cookies desert.
Too loud of a restaurant. Not amicable to conversation unless the person is sitting right next to you.
Service was slow. Requested bread and we recieved two small slices for the 3 people seated. It was insulting to say the least. Waiter did not flinch when he put the bread on the table and we had to point out to him there was 3 of us and did he expect us to share one of the slices.
This place is good for Happy hr only!
Went for the DineLa menu with 6 friends but the waiter said that everyone had to order off the DineLa menu. One of our friends did not want the DL menu so we spoke to the manager but it was company policy that everyone had order off the menu. No where on the menu or anywhere did they state this. That’s just bad customer service. Food was average and way over priced. Not coming back here again.
Great food and service. Good value ... But a bit too noisy
Recommended by hotel concierge. They placed us at an inside table where the draft was so bad, our menus would blow into our lap. After they moved us, hostess introduced us to new waitress and said we would get great attention. Although they weren't busy, wait staff was AWFUL. I had to get up three times to refill our wine glasses with our $100 bottle of wine. Same with water - wait staff ignored us, so I had to go to bus station to get water pitcher. French fries, which are hard to screw up, were mediocre at best. Bread basket was offered half way through dinner.
With all the amazing restaurants, don't waste your time here.
The restaurant itself is ok, the service was great and the food was mediocre. Not much flavor n the food won’t be back
Mussels was great.
All good was great.
Good for the dinner.
We had a romantic dinner night in the Restaurant. The atmoshpere was really great and the service from Andrew was amazing. Highly recommend the Restaurant again.
Very good and Ihighly recommend this restaurant for a night out personally or for a fun business dinner.
Tried Herringbone for a New Years late dinner date and loved the special menu, the food was amazing and the service was excellent. Would 100% recommend this restaurant to friends or family and will most likely come back for their oysters!
Came here for NYE and it didn't disappoint - Food and ambiance were great!
Visiting from out of town and found through Internet. Excellent experience, my halibut was superb and my husband liked his flat bread. Out server was great, she was very attentive and made us feel so welcome. We had the opposite experience the night before at s highly recommended seafood restaurant down the street. Highly recommend Herringbone!
