Herbie's Ratings and Reviews
Hadn't been to Herbie's since it moved from the Central West End. The commitment to quality and great food and drinks hasn't changed. I had the best hamburger (with pickles, cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato) on Brioche bun that I've had in a long time. It came with terrific fries, dusted with parmesan. I thought the price ($13.00) was reasonable for a REALLY great burger. Service was attentive, too.
Herbie’s came to me as a recommendation from a friend… five years removed from Boston, have to admit I had not heard of it. Wow was I surprised. Escargot was incredible… The best I’ve ever had. Nice wine list. Salmon was best in the city. Of course, my date made it all thr more memorabke.
We came for my mother's birthday and it was just perfect. So many wonderful items on the menu to fit everyone's dietary needs (personally was wowed by the fantastic vegan options), great wine list and outstanding cocktails, and attentive, personable staff. Couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate. Afterwards we moved over to the bar to watch Mizzou play and had an equally wonderful time- again staff was attentive and personable and just overall enjoyed the experience.
My only disappointment was the croutons. I had the Caesar salad and it was very good and innovative except the croutons. They were small and looked like they came from a box on the grocery store shelf.
It was a cold evening and we sat by the windows and were bothered by cold, drafty air.
The staff and the rest of our meal was very good.
Weak Service, Waiter very inattentive didn't check on us and we wanted to order more (but didn't), picked up left over steak for doggie bag-lost it, never did get it. Food slow being served.
Food was very good, atmosphere is wide open (date, anniversary, casual or semi-casual dress), anybody would be comfortable here.
We've been to Herbie's in Clayton for both brunch and dinner. Food is delicious and drinks are good as well. Love the unlimited mimosa s and bloody marys at brunch. The dinner menu offers something for everyone. The caesar salad is amazing as are the short ribs. Our server was fun and friendly. We like the atmosphere as it is lively but not too loud. It is nice to have a conversation over dinner without shouting. We will be back.
Herbie’s was an okay experience. I was expecting a bit more of a warmer reception of Service however they did place us by a window as requested...the windows of a drafty door on a rather cold night. Thankfully, my fiancé’s beef Wellington was good to her liking but the filet mignon was not cooked well at all. Actually it was over cooked, and that just spoiled my appetite for a good cuisine. To their credit, they did ask if they could get me another for which I declined. I didn’t want my lady waiting another hour just for me to receive another plate and then additional time to watch me eat. I guess I’m saying this to say that when someone orders a top notch meal such as filet mignon, you might want to ensure it goes out right. Our server/waiter Jose was really top notch. He apologized as I already knew he’s not the one in the kitchen. Thanks for you time.
Great place to grab a lunch during the work day. I think happy h our here would be fun too.
The servers are very nice and attentive. I was surprised to see that Cardwell's was no longer in that spot, but fortunately I remembered Herbie's was a good spot in the CWE years past.
The first time we dined at Herbie's, we had excellent food and service. Our waiter suggested the shrimp and grits. So happy he did. The best shrimp and grits I've had. Soup of the day was delicious, and the dessert sampler was really decadent. The new location is great.
We came back in November 2017 because we enjoyed Herbie's the first two times. Our first review was five stars. That dinner experience could not have been better. Unfortunately tonight we had one of our worst restaurant experiences in St. Louis ever. The kitchen sent out the wrong entree for one of our group of four. Server said the right entree would be out right away. At least ten minutes later, no sign of the correct entree. We complained. Manager checked on it. More waiting. The other three entrees were now cold. They took away our other entrees. More waiting. Finally brought correct entree and new versions of our other three entrees. The food was hot, but some ingredient must have been left out of my entree. Not nearly as good as when I had it before. Weak apologies from manager and server. They also brought the wrong bottle of wine, same winery but different wine. Offered to give us free dessert, but we weren't interested in dessert. Manager said he'd work his magic on the bill. Comped our two salads and brought us free glasses of cheap sparkling wine. Not what we wanted. 2.5 hours for a meal that should have been an hour on a slow Sunday night. A disaster. Most of the entrees were good, but the kitchen, service staff, and manager fumbled their way through the evening. We had been big fans, but we won't be back after this experience. Nor can we recommend Herbie's any longer. So disappointing. We were embarrassed that we had recommended this place to our friends for a special occasion dinner.
We were regulars at the Central West End location. The new location is closer to us, but lacks a bit of the charm of the old location, especially the "porch." The menu is more restricted. We missed some of our favorite offerings, such as pasta, several salad varieties, and soups. The current menu is too meat heavy for our preferences. We noticed after we had ordered that the menu indicates a vegetarian menu is available upon request. We prefer including vegetarian and lighter options on the regular menu. Please bring back more pastas, vegetables, and salads. And those wonderful baguettes. We will be back to watch the progress.
We went for Sunday brunch and it was delicious. It has a nice ambiance compared to some brunch options. The bottomless bloody marys and mimosas are a plus. There are options for those who want breakfast foods as well as those who want lunch. We will be back.
Food very spotty with a couple of dishes being very good but all others being unremarkable to not-so-good. The beef Wellington, for example , was tough. That should never happen. The pork chop was tough. The shrimp and grits with “tobacco” onions tasted bitter. Two very good things were the salmon entre with risotto and the short ribs entre. The prices were in line with those as generally elevated in Clayton but the food was not up to Clayton’s par.
