The ambiance is so beautiful, whether you dine in -doors or in the open patio. Our waitress was attentive and great. Such a great, fine dining experience.
Our server made recommendations which did not disappoint us! Each dish had a distinct personality. Service was well-timed and never intrusive. Appreciated the fresh plates and utensils with each course, as well as serving utensils. Fantastic dining experience!
Great service but everything was way saltier than it needed to be. As in the pasta itself was even too salty!
One of my favorite places in Little Italy, San Diego
The best bransino I ever had!
Love coming down to Herb and Wood, always a great meal. First time in for Brunch and we really enjoyed our breakfast.
Wonderful brunch. Great service, great food - including the basic breakfast and french toast and french press coffee. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
I highly recommend this restaurant. Staff was so nice. We are going back to celebrate our anniversary next!
Good only noisy
Rigatoni was too salty to eat.
Fantastic night out for our anniversary. Great food, service and lively atmosphere. Definitely recommended!
Food and drinks were delicious! We don't usually get an app and dessert,
but the portion sizes were small enough and since our app and entrees were delectable, we could not pass on dessert. Outdoor space had a retractable roof which was great, because it unexpectedly rained. It was lively, but quite loud so not best for serious or intimate conversation.
Excellent drinks, octopus was great, fillet was great, tuna was great, service was great, whipped feta was a little basic but also great.
Honestly, not great.
We were sat in the most ugly corner part of the restaurant with no view of anything other than someone’s stroller that had been left on the side of the wall. Our plates and napkins were dusty and there was a fly that relentlessly attacked us throughout our entire meal.
The food was mediocre at best for an insanely high price. The pizza was dry and barely contained any ricotta, which was one of the primary ingredients.
Our server was nice, but disappeared after taking our order and never returned. He didn’t even deliver our food. Someone else did. We had to ask the person collecting our plates for the check.
Also, everyone has to pay 4% surcharge…for what? Why is this charge added? What is the reasoning? Nothing is explained.
Impeccable food. The flavor profile, attention to detail, and mixture of herbs and spices was phenomenal. Love this place, I’ll be back for sure and price range was in line with expectations.
We ordered 3 glasses of Duckhorn Cabernet at 26$ per glass. It was good. The server, Zach , gave us a taste each and we liked it. Then ordered a strawberry and beet salad with machego cheese. The cheese was cut thin and there were 3 pieces, smaller than a Hersey square, and therefore not enough for the salad. When I had a composed bite, filled with strawberry, beets and machengo, it was delicious. But the cheese was small and sparse so the composed bite without the cheese was just fair. Next we had Tuna tartar. It Had the van du van spice I love, but it drowned out the tuna and onion. The Indian cardoman wafer accompanying the tuna was good, but I would have preferred the tuna without being drowned out with these spices. Then we had the octopus, which was chewy and rubbery. The sauce was tasty but i admire well cooked octopus that’s tender. The mushroom pizza came next. I liked that a lot. Garlicky, with the right amount of cheese, and a truly delicious crust, this was a winner. For a finale we had a berry cassis soufflé with blackberry (sorbet) touted as ice cream, with a marscopine whipped cream and lemon curd. I found that when I got bites with the lemon curd, I was happier than when I just had the soufflé ingredients. I could live without that desert. All in all our server was great, the food we ordered was nothing to write home about but I would come back for the pizza.
Food was utterly delicious and so full of flavor. I must say though that it was a very different food experience. My husband and I attributed the flavors to that of someone wearing a heavy dose of perfume. While the flavors were scrumptious, it was so intense that it seemed to diminish the actual flavor of the item it was meant to enhance. Meaning you couldn’t really taste the meat or fish it was on because you could only taste the flavor. Yet, like I said, the flavors were fabulous. So while it was an amazing dinner, I’m not sure I could frequent this place. Just like a heavy dose of perfume, there is a fine line of smelling desirable and it being so intense that you could only take it for a short time before it forces you to leave the room. That being said, yes, I recommend Herb & Wood as a fabulous meal for a special occasion.
Herb & Wood was the BEST meal I’ve had in a really long time. The food was exceptional and drinks were out of this world. Jeremy provided amazing service. If you’re in San Diego, I highly recommend Herb & Wood!!!
Mostly good. Staff a little slow and clumsy.
This was not our first time dining here and all prior occasions we were quite wowed. That was not the case this occasion which was highly unfortunate since we had family in visiting and spoke so highly of the place.
For starters we were stupendously unimpressed with the new expansion to the dining room we were sat in (the old market). We had come to love the original space and the expansion does not live up to it at all. Between the mismatch furniture, our table butt up against the old counter from the market with staff meeting and commiserating behind the counter and inputting orders like we were at Denny’s right behind us, it was disheartening to say the least. The food was still good, but not outstanding as it has been in the past. Full praise to the deserts which saved the day…
You have done and can do better. Please do so again.
Everything we ordered was delicious, waitress was very helpful. Order the carrot appetizer plate!!! Wife and I enjoyed our dinner date, definitely will return.
Service was fair if I’m being honest. Probably impacted the impression of the food. Some dishes were under flavored, beet and strawberry, pepper helped. The soufflé had too many competing flavors.
Great menu, exotic cocktails, very hip indoor/ outdoor vibe. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience.
Another amazing dinner at Herb and Wood! We had roasted oysters, lobster tail, coffee-rubbed venison, and lamb ragout among our party and all were exquisitely flavored, perfectly prepared, and stunningly presented. We enjoyed them with interesting and delicious cocktails and wine. The service was attentive without feeling rushed and our server was very knowledgeable about both food and wine.
We had three appetizers and the blackcurrant soufflé dessert. The dessert was excellent. However, the appetizers were underwhelming, hamachi and oysters not really well seasoned and the strawberry/beet tasty but very simple. Disappointing because we had last dined here about eight months ago; the execution of plates much stronger. At this price point, I wouldn't recommend the restaurant
Amazing food and service. Highly recommend venison and baby carrots!
Very average service, tables are way too small and you can’t see what you’re eating because the room is so dark! Food was below average for the price!
So happy to finally try this restaurant and it did not disappoint! I was surprised to find 4 walls open to the sky, best of both worlds these days. The Parker rolls will be dreamed about (but $12 for flour and butter seems a lot). The gnocchi with oxtail was so full of flavor I would order again and again. The venison melted in your mouth and the mustard greens were turned into crispy "chips"--nice way to get your greens:) Carrots were a touted side and they were the best carrot preparation I have ever had--a sauce and some nuts and herbs--oh my.
No room left for that black current soufflé', but we will come back for that one! Very nice touch to have the gratis cookie and ice cream to celebrate our anniversary:) Thank you H&W for a memorable dining experience:)
PS To H&W and all other restaurants who care--Please provide pillows for those whose bodies rebel from being seated on hard metal chairs. Everyone deserves physical comfort while dining. Thank you to our server who found me a padded seat:)
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. It’s nice that restaurants like Herb & Wood are open and thriving. The restaurant is beautiful but that was no surprise considering the aesthetics at Animae. We had a party of 4 celebrating a birthday and not only was there the traditional birthday dessert, they presented my friend with a birthday cocktail as well which was a lovely gesture.
We started our meal off with the Smoked Oysters and Bone Marrow along with the PorkBelly. Both dishes were the best preparations I’ve ever had in a restaurant. The bone marrow was absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked. We just wanted more of it! The oysters were dressed with a Mediterranean inspired mignonette which was a great burst of acid to complement the fat of the marrow and the toast. The Pork Belly was also very good. It was a bit charred for my taste but that was easily remedied with the sliced onions vinaigrette that accompanied it.
For our mains,
Whole Branzino — Amazing. The wrapping of speck around the fish was perfect. The soft delicate branzino inside was pure flavor and it was presented beautifully. Again, there was the perfect balance of fat and acid as there were castelvetrano (I think) olives in a light vinaigrette served along side.
Coffee Roasted Venison —. Well flavored, cooked to perfect temp and again well presented atop lentils and drizzled with a chimichurri
Seared local Tuna — very fresh and wonderfully flavored
Roasted Half Chicken — To is, very good but my least favorite but that’s because I don’t like ordering roast chickens at restaurants like this. The person who ordered it is also adverse to capers so judgment on this one isn’t really fair.
Passion and Bubbles —. I love passion fruit so this was going to be a hit and it was. Not too sweet and not too sour. Passion fruit was absolutely the star here
Iberico washed bourbon old fashioned — my boyfriend now had a goal to have meat fat in every cocktail. He loved this and it went perfect
The food is amazing! I ordered the pasta that comes with a lamb ragu, and it was absolutely amazing. Plenty of drinks to select from. Definitely perfect for a date or a nice night out with friends if you're looking for something more upscale.
We booked a reservation based on the pictures of the restaurant and vibe. They put us in some auxiliary room off to the side that had no ambiance
Great dinner, service, and ambiance!!
Truly one of the best meals I've ever eaten! You HAVE to have the chorizo pizza and the branzino--SO wonderful!
Everything about this place is amazingly dope.
One of the best in SD!
Food and drinks were great! Service was also good! Will be back!
We had a reservation for 6:45 on the 16th of June and arrived at 6:40. The table we were given was in a busy walkway and by the bathrooms which didn’t make for the greatest experience. Service was OK, the supervisor with a beard wasn’t too friendly, it was like you were bothering him when I asked a question about the unused kitchen we were sitting next to. I ordered the tuna and a side of summer squash, my friend ordered the filet. It took a while for the food, the squash arrived at the table barely warm, like it was sitting in the pick up window for a while, so I asked the server if it could be redone. The tuna was tasty, my friends steak was overcooked. The squash arrived back the table after I finished my main course, which wasn’t great. The peach cobbler for dessert was kind of raw at the bottom but tasty. $18.00 for a single malt scotch and $22.00 for a Pinot was pretty pricey so beware.
Overall it was decent, I thought pricing was high for what you got and was disappointed that Brian Malarkey’s restaurant wasn’t, in my opinion, “top chef” worthy.
Great food, drinks and service. Patio area ambiance is way better than inside though, would have loved to be outside.
I literally wanted to try everything on the menu, and what we did end up ordering was extraordinarily delicious. Also, as it was our 5th wedding anniversary, they brought us out a complementary dessert to help us celebrate! Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a nice night out.
