Herb & Wood is the latest concept brought to San Diego by celebrated chef Brian Malarkey. Chef Malarkey has created a “Secret Garden”-style dining escape that incites long dinners, conversation, and culinary delight.

Our friendly and knowledgeable staff serve up delectable raw seafood dishes, house-made pastas, wood-fired pizzas and seasonal vegetables, along with the finest meats and fresh fish.

Seating is available both indoors and out, including plush booths, a garden patio, and an iron chefs table placed directly in front of the display kitchen. Herb & Wood can also accommodate your private party or event, with private dining rooms and event spaces available for groups up to 100.

I loved this place but the experience was tainted by the service. First of all, we were seated 30min after our reservation because they were running behind. We were then seated in a table that was clearly an 8 top but they had just pulled apart so we were on top of the other table of 4 next to us. Next, the waitress accidentally broke two wine glasses behind the chair of one of our guests. The glass sprayed on the guest, was in her hair and in her chair seat. We asked for a different chair since it was covered in glass. The waitress informed us that there were no extra chairs in the restaurant and proceeded to try to pick out each sliver of glass from the chair. The manager came over and just checked in, did not say anything more. The food was amazing and the restaurant is beautifully decorated. But our experience was affected by everything else. To top it off, we asked for coffee at the end of the meal and the waitress brought us 4 freezing cold coffees. She apologized and said she did not check when the coffee was made or if it was warm when she served it. There was no acknowledgement of everything else that had occurred and we were charged for everything except the coffees. Overall I would go back to the restaurant because it was absolutely incredible food but the customer service was shockingly horrible.

We celebrated my wife’s 40th birthday and the staff went above and beyond with their service. From the fireside seating to the dessert to end our night, we loved our time at Herb & Wood

Hands down the best meal I’ve had. Our group of six shared a variety of entrees and small plates and everyone at our table was in awe of the food. Stellar menu. To top it off, our server was incredible. Attentive, experienced, personable, accommodating. He even waived our corkage fee for my girlfriend’s birthday. Highly recommend.

Amazing!!! Our server Jeremy was great, ambiance is perfect and every dish incredible! The shrimp and swordfish are both a must as well as the pizza and cauliflower!

This restaurant rates high for the food. The sushi appetizer was superb, as well as their signature dish, gnocchi with oxtail, amazing. Their peanut butter chocolate cake is a treat for serious chocolate lovers, delicious. Good, lively, unstuffy atmosphere, and great service. It was a cold night and I'd have liked the heaters to be a bit closer to my table, but otherwise, no complaints. Great service too. We will return!

Everything was fantastic! From the drinks to the apps to the main course ... and the service was terrific.
It was everything we wanted it to be for a night out entertaining family visiting. We are looking forward to coming back soon!

Absolutely delicious!!!

Chef Malarky was actually at the restaurant on Thanksgiving Day. He also took a picture with me, and it made my day! The restaurant speaks volumes to me about his commitment and dedication to his profession.

After reading reviews on line, we were looking forward to our Thanksgiving day meal here. We were greeted promptly and shown to our table. The server was efficient however we sensed it didn't matter to him whether we were there or not. It seemed very scripted, zero warmth or conversation. Where the experience fell apart for us was with the quantity and quality of the prix fixe Thanksgiving dinner. We felt the few pieces of deli sliced bland turkey and shared sides of mashed potatoes, stuffing and green beans were something we could have acquired for literally 1/10 of the price we paid. It was about $17.00 worth of prepared food we paid $191.49 out the door for. ($15.00 average tasting Manhattan should be deducted from food total above). We were thankful that they were open and everybody worked on Thanksgiving, but at these profit margins, I would too.

This review is specific to Thanksgiving because we have been there for cocktails and appetizers many times before and loved it. On Thanksgiving they offered a fixed menu for $65 with an extra $25 for wine pairings if you wanted them. We knew this going in and the menu looked delightful! Unfortunately the portions were so small of the “family style sides” that we actually ended Thanksgiving dinner hungry. Maybe not hungry, but definitely unsatisfied. One mini Parker roll per person, and a very small dish of stuffing, potatoes and green beans for the table to share. The mashed potatoes were by far the most delicious part of the meal so we were all sad we only got a large spoonful each. It was a lesson learned. We won’t go back for special events but we’ll definitely be there for their Happy Hour.

The food was outstanding, we ordered several dishes, small plates and entrees and there were no leftovers when the two of us were done with dinner, the ambience was relaxed and vibe energetic. The swordfish was superb moist and succulent and well balanced with the accompaniments. The iberico pork entree was served as strips, had a crisp finished exterior, while the meat was moist and tender, thought it would be a single piece. The octopus had us looking for more meat, delectable tho'. The grilled carrots and the beet salad were refreshing. Sweet Coconut kafir lime sorbetto was delicate and delicious. pinot Noir recommended complemented the food. The service was excellent and the wait staff were smiling, pleasant, courteous, knowledgeable and lovely too!

Very trendy restaurant with a fun vibe. Would definitely recommend this place for a group dinner or girls night. I went here with my husband for a date night and though we really enjoyed it, I think I would choose a quieter place for our next date night. Really good food and fun place, we will definitely take out of towners here!

The food was phenomenal! Love the Branzino and duck dishes. Started with octopus, grilled carrots and burrata. All we exceptional. The only downside for this restaurant is the noise level. You can only hear the person next to you and across the table. Regardless, I'll be back!!

I came into Herb & Wood on the early end of a weekend evening as a solo diner. The food itself (beet salad, hamachi, venison loin, black pepper thyme gelato) was delicious and flavorful but I found the service lacking. Couples and groups around me were greeted warmly, walked through the menu, and given a rundown of specials, none of which were offered to me by the same server. Wait staff also tried to clear my plates prior to finishing several times, which made me feel like they were rushing me because I was alone. I suggest solo diners head next door to Juniper & Ivy, where I had a superb experience the previous evening for about half the check. total.

Herb and Wood is so consistent. This is my husband and I's favorite restaurant. The oxtail gnocchi is to die for. I get it every time. We just went for my husbands birthday and I had a special announcement to make to him. I reached out to herb and wood to help with the surprise. They were very responsive and so amazing during the planning process. The surprise was flawless and my husband had a memorable evening. I would like to thank Nick and our amazing waiter for their time and service. The food of course was fantastic! We will definitely be back soon.

bread rolls were fantastic! So light and fluffy inside, such a lovely crust on top. Overall I enjoyed my meal but its definitely for those that embrace herbed dishes (Makes sense for the name/concept of the place. I'm in, my company was maybe not). The Octopus was a little tough in my opinion and big chunks of parsley were a little overbearing. The Oxtail Gnocchi was amazing as were the carrots. We split the venison which was good, but I wouldn't say the star of the meal. Overall an enjoyable meal and the crepe at the end was perfection!

Had the branzine again. While fish was just as good it was in a greasy sauce which detracted from delicacy and flavors of fish. The cauliflower was also not as good as lat time — overcooked.

Other than some disappointingly bland and textureless avocado toast, this was a win all around. (Nowhere in the world have I ever had shrimp toast that was this good. It brought back treasured memories of sopping up Moules frites at a street cafe, but was somehow even better.) Fantastic assortment of side vegetables... Attentive service, lovely table... we could even hear ourselves talk. Can’t wait to come back. Thank you.

Well, we knew it would be expensive, and it was, but this was no surprise. The food was very good, but not excellent. My friends said the pizza was very good, but, hey, it's pizza. I had duck with a great flavor, but honestly it could have been rendered a little more and was slightly chewy. The octopus also had great flavor but was slightly chewy. My husband really liked the branzino. Bread is not complimentary but it is delicious so I recommend that you get some for the table. The service was excellent. We are on the older side, well, hell, we are just old. So, the noise was a little much for us, as we wanted to visit with each other. We brought our own wine, which was delicious-there is a $35 dollar corkage fee. All in all, a nice experience for a special treat, but not perfect. So far, I can't find a restaurant where I walk out thinking that all of the food was great. I'll keep looking!

The Secreto pork was served too raw for me. The Briazano fish and venison both had great flavor. The oxtail gnocci portion is suitable as an appetizer. As was the hamaci, an appetizer.

Excellent food and service. The noise level is out of control. Design 101 for restaurants: provide surfaces to absorb sound. Watch out for the up sell, as I have found it to be unreliable.
