Herb provides fine Thai dining in the Chicago area. The chefs use the freshest and highest-quality ingredients while at the same time injecting their passion for the culinary arts in each and every dish. The restaurant itself is the creation of Patty Neumson, who grew up in Thailand. She has developed four seasonal menus for Herb that guests can order from, depending on the time of year.
Diners can be treated to dishes like betel leaf, pork belly, Thai sausage, duck and Thai egg custard. The restaurant serves an array of soups, salads and desserts as well to complement each meal. Herb has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognition for its cuisine.

Herb is an upscale Thai restaurant in Edgewater, with a fix prixe menu and delicious food.
This lovely BYOB Thai restaurant will become your favorite! Lovely contemporary and elegant restaurant - perfect for a date. I absolutely fell in love with every plate brought to my table. The chef sent over a lovely amuse bouche that I cannot get out of my mind. We enjoyed three courses of the wonderful crispy shrimp, a spicy soup and salmon. There were great vegetarian and pescetarian options. The chef was charming and sweet and checked in on each table.
I love Herb and have never been disappointed. Will return
Excellent dishes, exquisite flavors, helpful and unobtrusive servers. Only complaint was the $6.00 corkage fee which seemed rather steep given that thia is a BYOB and all that was provided was the use of glasses. We opened and poured ourselves!
I can’t say enough about Herb. Chef Patty brings together a beautiful, healthy dishes filled with Thai flavors and spice! The dumplings with cucumber skin and amazing soups are not to be skipped. A beautiful evening for visitors from NYC, we can’t wait to visit again.
We dined here at the recommendation of a friend and we are so glad we did!! We had the 5-course tasting menu which was delightful--you can choose from the menu to complete the meal. The food was easy to share. The dumplings and chicken salad apps were great. The mushroom soup fabulous! Beef and salmon entrees tasty. Chef's choice desserts a wonderful sampling. We will definitely come back. Of note, some reviewers indicate the food was very spicy. Everyone's threshold of spicy is different--we found the food to be not too spicy and could have the option for making food spicier.
A local favorite for my wife and me. When we go to Steep Theater , we go to Herb for pre-theater dinner. It's walking distance to the theater so works well. The food is excellent and the space is very minimalist, yet comfortable. The preparation is done with care, and the presentation is artistic. We usually go with the Prix Fixe Menu (Choice of 3 Items) and then add two desserts as extra. They also have a really nice/exotic tea selection.
From start to finish, everything on the winter prix fixe menu was absolutely delicious. The courses were perfectly sized and well spaced so that we felt satisfied without feeling stuffed. The dishes were elevated without being fussy and obviously a lot of thought and care went into balancing all the flavors in each dish. It was really nice to have the chef come to our table after the meal to introduce herself. Really made the whole evening very special.
Two practical notes: They are BYOB, but no corking fee. I was happy with the ginger lemongrass tea, though. Also, parking on that part of Broadway on a Friday evening was a cinch. Plenty of spots on the same block as the restaurant.
My 3-course prefixe dinner choices were delicious but I would have liked more menu choices that were only mildly spicy. Server was very helpful with guidance.
Loved the food. Loved the ambiance. Our server was a dim bulb. Barely checking in. Late with our drinks. Bad service from him. However, Chef Patty came out and interacted with us and was very descriptive, pleasant, and accommodating which made up for the server's oafishness. I would dine here again because of the food.
Nice place but overpriced for unexciting food. My wife and I were a bit disappointed.
We loved our whole meal. Service was outstanding, even the chef came to say hello. Presentation was beautiful. We didn't know it was byob but will bring wine next time!
Always a remarkable experience. this will continue to be one of my favorites for fresh, upscale Thai food.
Service is always spectacular along with the ambiance.
I've been here five times and Herb always is a great experience. The upscale Asian food is delicious and the setting is quiet and relaxed. The plates are beautifully presented, often decorated with a flower or just a few petals. Chef Patty frequently steps out of the kitchen to greet guests and take food orders.
First time at Herb. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will go back. Love the food, plus the BYOB situation is nice too.
Best restaurant in Chicago while living here over the last 2 years. I’m vegetarian and husband eats everything, finally a place where we both had amazing food when dining together . Loved it!!!!
Really great, sophisticated Thai food. Not nearly as cheap as your neighborhood noodle joint, but way better.
Patty's food is delicious and she takes thai food to a higher level. She is creative and health conscious when choosing what to make. She takes pride and a lot of passion in the food she creates.
Ordered 3 and 5 course tasting menu. Incorrect food was delivered at almost every course, a course was forgotten. . We indicated mild spice level on a main course, sent it back, and was still too spicy and inedible.
The food was fabulous but service was incredibly slow. Portions were small and we waited a long time between courses. And we were in a strange overflow room with just a few tables. Absolutely no ambiance in that room.
The food is special - Patti does an icredible job with flavors, textures and presentation. Wait staff is helpful and the kitchen does lower the spice level on demand. This is truly a neighborhood gem.
Excellent Thai restaurant miles removed from the standard fare. Upscale Thai food, presentation and service are all exquisite at a very reasonable price point. BYOB policy much appreciated.
Herb is consistently fantastic! Patti elevates Thai cooking to a level that must be experienced to be believed.
Loved the experience, Food is amazing. I always going be back.
The food is outstanding from start to finish. New expanded dining space could be a bit more inviting. Even candles on the tables would warm it up. But again, the food is just the best!
If tou’re Looking to just gulp down a lot of food, move right along. But if you’re looking to delight your senses with unique flavors and aromas, get in here on the double.
Amazing food with fresh ingredients. Everything is elegantly presented and nicely paced. The chef/owner always checks in which is a nice touch too. Definitely a neighborhood gem. Perfect for a date night or for entertaining friends. The soup was the highlight for me both times, beautiful light coconut broth. I highly recommend for any Thai food lovers.
Beautiful food in a lovely environment. We thoroughly enjoyed it!
The food was lovely and the service terrific. We were celebrating my husband's birthday. We will definitely go back.
Really wonderful upscale Thai food. The flavors are familiar to those who eat Thai food but the sophistication of the presentations, the blend of many subtle yet assertive flavors and the friendly, helpful service all make dining in a great night. There were several groups of 6-10 people having great times. It's BYO. Tasting menu (3 or 5 courses) is the way to go and with 2 or more people, you'll be able to try everything offered (Chef's whim dessert is already a sampling of 4 desserts). I just wish the menu changed more often and by that, more things added because nothing should be taken away--the prawns are gorgeous and delicious, the soup a must, and whatever entrees you choose, from tofu to fish to chicken to pork belly, you will love it.
Patty the Chef and owner does an amazing job of combining vegetables, protein, seafood, color, spices, and flavor to create delicious food. Eat bite is an experience. The menu changes with the seasons so plan to experience flavors that complement and utilize what is in season.
Every dish is unique flavors and very well prepared. I will be coming back again and again for each season's menu. I do think the winter menu is very good.
Went to redeem a Groupon. One of the best culinary experiences I've had in Chicago.
Exceptional Food Quality. Unique and Fresh.
Fixed price but lots of up charges. Also $12 per person cork charge for BYOB
Food is beautiful, delicious and innovative. We came away sated but the portions are very dainty. It's a special place, but a bit pricey even after we brought our own bottle.
Having know about Herb for over a year, and looking at it's website, I thought I had a good idea of what to expect. Wrong, it was better.
I was excited to check this place out after the great reviews and check please episode, but we were all terribly disappointed.
I think the place expanded too quickly and cannot keep up with the size they are now.
The service was non-existent. We waited 15 minutes after we were seated and no one still came to our table. We had to constantly ask to get attention of someone and we had no regular server. No one ever checked on our table.
The food is average - nothing that WOWS. They cut some things off of the already small menu that I read online.
The chicken dish was undercooked and a couple dishes weren’t hot as they were supposed to be when served.
It was the worst dining experience I think I’ve ever had and I dine at restaurants at least twice a week.
A neighbor introduced me to Herb. We met here for a girls night out. I brought my husband back for our anniversary. Love it. The decor is spare, but the food itself feels very warm and personal. It's artistic and delicious and original.
Gourmet Thai cuisine in the neighborhood .
One of the best things about Herb is that the menu changes every 3 months so you can always find something new to try. Patty specializes in great food well presented.
