Herb is an upscale Thai restaurant in Edgewater, with a fix prixe menu and delicious food.
Herb is a culinary treasure in the Edgewater neighborhood. With a menu that changes with the seasons Chef Patty never disappoints with beautiful presentation and unique ingredients. The plate is garnished with flowers for a picture perfect course. Dessert, the Chefs whim is light but an excellent ending to the meal. Our only complaint was eating in the newer dining area which was quieter but rather sparse.
I took my friend here soon after Patty Neumson won the WBEZ's 10th Annual Chicago Chef Battle. Eating here was a beautiful experience. Gracious service and artistic plating. It was a sensory delight. The betel leaf appetizer and mushroom soup were even more amazing than I had remembered my sample at the chef battle. This really is happy food. Our eyes lit up with every bite. What a gem.
At the risk of this restaurant becoming always booked and thereby being difficult to get a reservation, I can't say enough good things about this creative, delicious and wonderful establishment. While the menu only offers prix fixe options (plus ala carte desserts) it is definitely some of the best Thai food we've enjoyed.
This was recommended by friends and they were right! Unusual to have a price- fixed multi-course meal in this ethnic zone It is a very good value even before you get to the BYOB aspect. The staff is friendly. The owner makes every effort to connect. The presentation is terrific. The only thing not very positive is the deserts which I would skip.
Patty's restaurant is a dream! So glad she is keeping the authentic tradition alive!
Superbe food as always. The menu changes with the seasons. The chef as always comes by to greet you, talk about her menu, specific dishes as well as her choices to support locally grown.
Herb is a small restaurant with a very talented, hands-on chef and owner. The portions are on the smaller side (compared to most restaurants), and that is a good thing. It allows the customers/diners to truly enjoy each course. The flavors and freshness of the food were wonderful. Presentation is impeccable! The owner/chef was attentive to our and other tables, ensuring that food and service met our needs. We couldn't have been more impressed.
For a foodie who's tried all of Chicago's hot spots, I have to say Herb is extremely underrated. Quality and quantity is exceptional for the price range. The spicy pork and the spicy salmon fish were a bit too spicy but everything else was exceptionally flavored and presented. Chef Patty is talented, hospitable, and attentive. This has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants and I highly recommend it to whoever wants a real taste of Chicago's high end yet affordable dinning.
This was our second visit and we took out of town friends. It was really wonderful. The Thai food is fantastic and authentic. The tasting menu is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the full range of this outstanding cuisine, and it was carefully and passionately explained as we progressed through the meal. Absolutely worth the visit - even for our friends from Washington!
My wife and I each ordered the three course option, plus we shared a chef's whim dessert. Everything was wonderful, but the highlights were the spicy salmon soup and the lamb option for an additional $6.00. We have dined at around twenty Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurants in Chicago so far, and Herb is in our top three.
very creative menu that is beautiful to look at and very delicious. I loved the pork tenderloin and the lettuce wraps with grilled fish.
Wonderful, memorable meal with fresh ingredients and exciting tastes. Very attentive service
I took my boyfriend there for his birthday. The food was amazing and the service was superb. Make sure you bring your own wine as they are BYOB. Such great food! Will definitely return!
I have eaten here several times and am never disappointed. Chef Patty creates and serves some of the most beautiful dishes I have ever eaten.
The tasting menu changes seasonally, so I am sure to eat here four times a year, but I'd go more than that :-)
Each dish is a work of art, not to mention delicious. Creative, careful take on Thai food. I am so glad they 'forced' me to try so many dishes. BYOB makes it fancy affordable.
This lovely BYOB Thai restaurant will become your favorite! Lovely contemporary and elegant restaurant - perfect for a date. I absolutely fell in love with every plate brought to my table. The chef sent over a lovely amuse bouche that I cannot get out of my mind. We enjoyed three courses of the wonderful crispy shrimp, a spicy soup and salmon. There were great vegetarian and pescetarian options. The chef was charming and sweet and checked in on each table.
I love Herb and have never been disappointed. Will return
Excellent dishes, exquisite flavors, helpful and unobtrusive servers. Only complaint was the $6.00 corkage fee which seemed rather steep given that thia is a BYOB and all that was provided was the use of glasses. We opened and poured ourselves!
I can’t say enough about Herb. Chef Patty brings together a beautiful, healthy dishes filled with Thai flavors and spice! The dumplings with cucumber skin and amazing soups are not to be skipped. A beautiful evening for visitors from NYC, we can’t wait to visit again.
We dined here at the recommendation of a friend and we are so glad we did!! We had the 5-course tasting menu which was delightful--you can choose from the menu to complete the meal. The food was easy to share. The dumplings and chicken salad apps were great. The mushroom soup fabulous! Beef and salmon entrees tasty. Chef's choice desserts a wonderful sampling. We will definitely come back. Of note, some reviewers indicate the food was very spicy. Everyone's threshold of spicy is different--we found the food to be not too spicy and could have the option for making food spicier.
A local favorite for my wife and me. When we go to Steep Theater , we go to Herb for pre-theater dinner. It's walking distance to the theater so works well. The food is excellent and the space is very minimalist, yet comfortable. The preparation is done with care, and the presentation is artistic. We usually go with the Prix Fixe Menu (Choice of 3 Items) and then add two desserts as extra. They also have a really nice/exotic tea selection.
From start to finish, everything on the winter prix fixe menu was absolutely delicious. The courses were perfectly sized and well spaced so that we felt satisfied without feeling stuffed. The dishes were elevated without being fussy and obviously a lot of thought and care went into balancing all the flavors in each dish. It was really nice to have the chef come to our table after the meal to introduce herself. Really made the whole evening very special.
Two practical notes: They are BYOB, but no corking fee. I was happy with the ginger lemongrass tea, though. Also, parking on that part of Broadway on a Friday evening was a cinch. Plenty of spots on the same block as the restaurant.
My 3-course prefixe dinner choices were delicious but I would have liked more menu choices that were only mildly spicy. Server was very helpful with guidance.
Loved the food. Loved the ambiance. Our server was a dim bulb. Barely checking in. Late with our drinks. Bad service from him. However, Chef Patty came out and interacted with us and was very descriptive, pleasant, and accommodating which made up for the server's oafishness. I would dine here again because of the food.
Nice place but overpriced for unexciting food. My wife and I were a bit disappointed.
We loved our whole meal. Service was outstanding, even the chef came to say hello. Presentation was beautiful. We didn't know it was byob but will bring wine next time!
Always a remarkable experience. this will continue to be one of my favorites for fresh, upscale Thai food.
Service is always spectacular along with the ambiance.
I've been here five times and Herb always is a great experience. The upscale Asian food is delicious and the setting is quiet and relaxed. The plates are beautifully presented, often decorated with a flower or just a few petals. Chef Patty frequently steps out of the kitchen to greet guests and take food orders.
First time at Herb. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will go back. Love the food, plus the BYOB situation is nice too.
Best restaurant in Chicago while living here over the last 2 years. I’m vegetarian and husband eats everything, finally a place where we both had amazing food when dining together . Loved it!!!!
Really great, sophisticated Thai food. Not nearly as cheap as your neighborhood noodle joint, but way better.
Patty's food is delicious and she takes thai food to a higher level. She is creative and health conscious when choosing what to make. She takes pride and a lot of passion in the food she creates.
Ordered 3 and 5 course tasting menu. Incorrect food was delivered at almost every course, a course was forgotten. . We indicated mild spice level on a main course, sent it back, and was still too spicy and inedible.
The food was fabulous but service was incredibly slow. Portions were small and we waited a long time between courses. And we were in a strange overflow room with just a few tables. Absolutely no ambiance in that room.
The food is special - Patti does an icredible job with flavors, textures and presentation. Wait staff is helpful and the kitchen does lower the spice level on demand. This is truly a neighborhood gem.
Excellent Thai restaurant miles removed from the standard fare. Upscale Thai food, presentation and service are all exquisite at a very reasonable price point. BYOB policy much appreciated.
Herb is consistently fantastic! Patti elevates Thai cooking to a level that must be experienced to be believed.
Loved the experience, Food is amazing. I always going be back.
The food is outstanding from start to finish. New expanded dining space could be a bit more inviting. Even candles on the tables would warm it up. But again, the food is just the best!
