Hemingway's Restaurant - Bay Bridge Marina Ratings and Reviews
We have been coming to Hemingways for years and it continues to improve. The latest remodeling is smart, charming and welcoming with a nautical theme appropriate to the location on the Chesapeake Bay. The view is spectacular even at night as it overlooks the Chesapeake Bay Bridge span.
The food has been very good. The crab cakes are especially delicious with large chunks of crabmeat. Recently we were disappointed with a brunch item of eggs Benedict. The sauce was very skimpy.
The service was excellent. But that brings me to a disquieting situation on our last visit. As we were a party of over six people we were told the gratuity was included in the bill. We assumed it would be the customary 15-18% and, as we liked our server so much, we were going to add more. However, the added amount was 20%! This seemed a presumption which we did not appreciate and took the edge off our opinion.
This situation will not prevent us from returning, but will color our previously outstanding recommendation.
One of the person's in my party had a seafood allergy. The manager (female/long dark hair - sorry don't remember the name) came over to our table to chat with her. She (my Niece) explained what she was and not allergic too. The Manager made sure she had a clear understanding of this. When the food came out, we found out that the cooking oil for any foods that she was allergic to was changed out prior to her meal being cooked. This shows outstanding customer service for the restaurant staff. The food was amazing. THANK YOU!!!
Requested and was seated outside. Ordered soup and appetizers. Service was slow and food was tepid in temperature upon arrival. We were not provided water nor appetizer plates. Placed food order and asked about the starch and vegetable . Was only given 1 option of each even after I inquired of other offerings. Order came and I was given a substitute without I first conferring with me. Hemingway’s was at one time, one of our favorites. Food was a bit salty and everything tasted the same.
Very good wait staff, our waiter was attentive and in tune to us, but the place was TOO noisy, even away from the bar. The food was good too, but not if you like to eat big meals; great for foodies. The décor is very nice and the view is fantastic and the location is great, BUT, put some acoustic tiles on the ceilings or walls or someplace to dampen the sound of 20 conversations going on at once. Another restaurant who cantered to the architect's every artistic wish vs. creating a pleasant place for the diners to enjoy some conversation along with the food and a nice decor. Do that and you have a winner.
We always stop here on our way back from the Eastern Shore. This place has always exceeded our expectations. The Crabcakes are awesome, the 50/50 crab soup is perfect, and they always have great beers on tap...although the Hemmingways Ale is always an excellent choice. Most important is the view of the bay...it is always beautiful! This time Belo did an excellent job recommending some menu items...the coconut shrimp appetizers were perfect.
Some of us went for crab cakes (me) which were underwhelming but Jenna was an outstanding waitress. The first two staff members we saw appeared to believe our party of six were actually ghosts; they didn't utter a word to us even when spoken to. Some of us sat at the bar for a few minutes but there reception was the same. We went to Hemingway's on our way to a vacation in Maryland and didn't have to think about going back on our return.
We decided to take a break from the bridge trraffic & stopped for lunch. The staff was welcoming and seated us quickly. We were outside & simply enjoyed the view. Our crab cake sandwiches were delicious. Everything one could ask for on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
So I have to start off and say that I love Hemingway's. We drive from Falls Church, VA just to hang out on the bay which is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately tonight there was a thunderstorm that popped up out of nowhere. Which was fine. we were easily accommodated in the inside dining room. The service was great as usual. The staff is always welcoming. The only thing I did not appreciate too much for was a high amount of flies that were inside of the dining room. The food was pretty good. The only thing I have to say that the corn was a little old I'm looking. Definitely something to try anytime you're coming or going to the ocean.
We usually try to stop at Hemmingways on our way back from the Eastern Shore. Food is always great...I would recommend the crab cakes...they are excellent. Also the 50/50 crab soup is unique and very good! The view is great especially out on the patio. We were too early for the live music, but have enjoyed the entertainment on previous visits...overall we continue to be pleased with the food and the atmosphere.
A generally satisfactory experience, including a great view, great food, great service. However, the noise level was very high, uncomfortably so, and management should really address this. It would be a reason for not returning. Also, this is a large restaurant with, in my opinion, inadequate restroom facilities. Management needs to make some changes for customer comfort.
Half the restaurant had sun shining in their eyes and no shades. Food was ordinary and my medium well steak was extremely rare and I sent it back and it came back burnt. I did not eat it... No compensation or acknowledgement from staff. Steak was about 1/4 of an inch. Don't waste you money.
I would not recommend this restaurant to a dog!! They service was absolutely appalling. Our server was congregating and chatting with other staff members instead of ensuring that our table has fresh cold water, and refills and that fresh bread was delivered. The food was mediocre at best. The crab dip was a hit!! The restaurant had no air condition!!! It was sitting in a sauna!! The manager had a very nonchalant attitude and had too many excuses for why were being mistreated!!
It took a while for our entrees, but that explained to us upon arrival. Maybe the air conditioning wasn't working very well because it was very warm inside. There was no breeze coming in from outside and, there weren't very many people in the dining area where we were seated. Had I been more familiar with restaurant, we would've opted to dine outside to get some relief from the heat with the breeze off of the water (there was bit of a high wind that day too).
Special menu for Father's Day Lunch, seating was a bit backed up, even with our reservation. However, the food was excellent, the waitstaff friendly and when she didn't know the answer, she went and got it. She had good recommendations and we had a lovely view of the bay bridge. Even though the place was busy, we felt well cared for and not rushed at all. thanks
Our server and food were fine. However, the restaurant refused to put up their umbrellas to shield the diners from the sun. It was 90 degrees without barely a breeze, but the restaurant was afraid the "breeze" was too great a liability and would send the umbrellas sailing away, even though they were weighed down with 100lb casters. So, seven customers with sunburn, three of them children, who will not be returning.
We asked for outside but the weather was questionable so we took a booth inside. We had no view from there which was disappointing since it's a beautiful waterfront venue. Food was very good with one exception, the soft crab was not fresh, tasted fishy and perhaps frozen. Drinks were delicious. We were inside with a large group and it was very noisy!
This is my 2nd visit to Hemingways. The food is amazing & service is great too. The view can't be beat and there is a lot to do. You can dine indoors, outside on the deck, on the patio or at the outdoor bar. There are boats galore & you can even watch the small aircraft taking off from the local airport next door. For us it's a short drive down 301, but well worth it. We will be back for sure!
