We will definitely come back for breakfast in lunch. The food, atmosphere and customer service was on point:)
We made reservations 2 hrs in advance, and when we got there we waited in line for 15 min just to talk to a hostess. The entire outside deck was sat and the hostess could not find a table for us anywhere. Very unorganized and chaotic.
We wanted a romantic dinner, overlooking the bay at sunset to celebrate our anniversary. Perhaps I should have read more reviews before booking our dinner. We weren't disappointed but we weren't happy either. The overall experience was average. First the good. The food was fantastic. Crab soup, baked oysters, seafood scampi, Chesapeake jambalaya and turtle cheesecake was what we ordered. It was all great and we would highly recommend each of these items. The view? Well that's why you would go to Hemingway's in the first place right? The view was gorgeous, albeit a little cloudier than we wanted, but none the less, looking out over a calm bay while eating dinner was quite nice. Price wise, it's reasonable for a night out. There's were TV's in the dining room which weren't distracting but unexpected. Its not as romantic as I had imagined, but then again, that's on me for not reading as much about it. Their outside eating area would be great on milder spring and summer days.
The not so good. Our server was below average. We watched other tables get attentive service all evening. We waited for water...twice. Now I am not a snob and dont need my glass filled the instant its empty, but we shouldn't be told by our server she will be right back and then have to ask another server to get us our drinks, all while watching the server assigned to our table pass us 4 times. We were offered bread, which we were told was in the oven. Nearly 10 minutes passed and still no bread, at which time the server apologized and said it would be another minute. 30 seconds later, its brought to the table and we are told its super hot, to be careful. Well, it was room temperature. Butter barely melted on it. Our food made it out and thankfully it was good. I will chalk it up to our server having a bad evening. It happens.
The food and view was worth the price. I would have rated higher had we received better service. Will go back for lunch, not dinner.
Got together there with friends that we had not seen in a long time. We had a great table with a view of the water and we had great conversation. It wasn't too noisy but it wasn't so quiet that we felt like others were listening. The food was delicious and the service was great! Will go back again soon!
This was the worst experience on this day... they were busy, granted, but it shouldn’t take 40 minutes to get an omelette and salad, then we were charged for Pellegrio, which the table next to us ordered! Took awhile to get a glass of water as I saw numerous tables looking around because food was taking forever.
Beautiful place and beautiful view of the watr. Food was reasonably priced and excellent!
I would not write home about it. The vegetable choice is terrible. I got the turkey and brie and it was so dry. I would go somewhere else the next time over the bridge. The view was nice though.
The food was pretty basic an not that great. Had salmon and fried shrimp.
Amazing service level. Ask for Morgan.
One of the best (and least grease laden) fish and chips around.
We’ve never had a bad meal here - food and service are always great. First time we had been for lunch - great deal! And the view - doesn’t matter if the weather is good or bad, I could stare out those windows all day...
I am very disappointed in Hemingway’s.
Monday I made an online reservation for dinner for 2 at 7pm. Traveled quite a distance to find that the restaurant was CLOSED.
The phone message didn’t note this, nor did the online reservation system.
I called the next day to speak to someone, conveniently busy, and left my phone number..... no recall.
Good luck with the business!!!
The BBQ brisket was awesome
We requested an item that was not on the menu and was accommodated beautifully. The service was particularly good as they were not busy on a very cold Tuesday.
We go here often, mainly for the view and because it's convenient and quiet enough for my noise-sensitive elderly mom. But also the food is consistently good and the service is excellent.
Christmas celebration. Cream of crab soup was very good as were the house made desserts- Creme brûlée, turtle cheesecake and peanut butter pie. S
Very good overall experience. Our waitress was exceptional ! Keep up the good work.
Marginal food quality not prepared as requested. Way over done seafood. They took the dish off my bill but it should not have been that bad in the first place.
Easy parking, need signage in lot to tell people where to go, it’s confusing. Service was great, food was fine, it is loud in there. Too loud! They need noise absorbers, not expensive. Everything is wooden!
We have been coming to Hemingways for years and it continues to improve. The latest remodeling is smart, charming and welcoming with a nautical theme appropriate to the location on the Chesapeake Bay. The view is spectacular even at night as it overlooks the Chesapeake Bay Bridge span.
The food has been very good. The crab cakes are especially delicious with large chunks of crabmeat. Recently we were disappointed with a brunch item of eggs Benedict. The sauce was very skimpy.
The service was excellent. But that brings me to a disquieting situation on our last visit. As we were a party of over six people we were told the gratuity was included in the bill. We assumed it would be the customary 15-18% and, as we liked our server so much, we were going to add more. However, the added amount was 20%! This seemed a presumption which we did not appreciate and took the edge off our opinion.
This situation will not prevent us from returning, but will color our previously outstanding recommendation.
It was a very nice way to spend Thanksgiving, with such a beautiful sunset
One of the person's in my party had a seafood allergy. The manager (female/long dark hair - sorry don't remember the name) came over to our table to chat with her. She (my Niece) explained what she was and not allergic too. The Manager made sure she had a clear understanding of this. When the food came out, we found out that the cooking oil for any foods that she was allergic to was changed out prior to her meal being cooked. This shows outstanding customer service for the restaurant staff. The food was amazing. THANK YOU!!!
Requested and was seated outside. Ordered soup and appetizers. Service was slow and food was tepid in temperature upon arrival. We were not provided water nor appetizer plates. Placed food order and asked about the starch and vegetable . Was only given 1 option of each even after I inquired of other offerings. Order came and I was given a substitute without I first conferring with me. Hemingway’s was at one time, one of our favorites. Food was a bit salty and everything tasted the same.
Very good wait staff, our waiter was attentive and in tune to us, but the place was TOO noisy, even away from the bar. The food was good too, but not if you like to eat big meals; great for foodies. The décor is very nice and the view is fantastic and the location is great, BUT, put some acoustic tiles on the ceilings or walls or someplace to dampen the sound of 20 conversations going on at once. Another restaurant who cantered to the architect's every artistic wish vs. creating a pleasant place for the diners to enjoy some conversation along with the food and a nice decor. Do that and you have a winner.
Crab cake was poor. Oysters were not fresh and I was gold they were from NewJersey. Rockfish was good
We always stop here on our way back from the Eastern Shore. This place has always exceeded our expectations. The Crabcakes are awesome, the 50/50 crab soup is perfect, and they always have great beers on tap...although the Hemmingways Ale is always an excellent choice. Most important is the view of the bay...it is always beautiful! This time Belo did an excellent job recommending some menu items...the coconut shrimp appetizers were perfect.
Some of us went for crab cakes (me) which were underwhelming but Jenna was an outstanding waitress. The first two staff members we saw appeared to believe our party of six were actually ghosts; they didn't utter a word to us even when spoken to. Some of us sat at the bar for a few minutes but there reception was the same. We went to Hemingway's on our way to a vacation in Maryland and didn't have to think about going back on our return.
Did not get served for first 10minutes. but server was kind after that. Food was great
Ambiance was beautiful! A little pricey but overall a nice experience.
Great meal, beautiful outdoor seating right on the water. We'll definitely return. Easy fly in spot and a short walk to W29.
Food was fabulous as always and you cannot beat that beautiful sunset over the bay. A family favorite.
The service was poor - they were not busy but still we got no attention. Had made reservation well over a week before - requesting outdoor seating - upon our arrival was told no outdoor seating available - 40 minute wait. VERY DISAPPOINTED
We decided to take a break from the bridge trraffic & stopped for lunch. The staff was welcoming and seated us quickly. We were outside & simply enjoyed the view. Our crab cake sandwiches were delicious. Everything one could ask for on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
Love Hemingway's for it's fabulous view of the Chesapeake Bay and Bay Bridge. Great staff, good food and great bar for watching sports events. Noise level can be a little annoying at times but the many plusses outweigh this minus.
This is going to become a yearly vacation stop. I asked for a window seat when I made the reservation and it was a beautiful view. Food was good and served promptly. We took a walk around the property after dinner and watched the sunset.
Beautiful view, relaxing atmosphere, wonderful service, and delicious meal! What more could we ask for?
Our group of 5 had a wonderful time! Our waitress was very helpful with entree and dessert suggestions! The peanut butter pie was delicious! Will definitely be back again!
Having been here before and the weather being nice it seemed like the right thing to do!
Great first experience. Service was excellent, menu choices were varied (and included several GF options), and view was speactular. The Rockfish Reuben itself was worth a return trip. Highly recommend.
Great view of the Chesapeake Bay. Lots of good seafood choices. The rockfish rueben was delicious.
So I have to start off and say that I love Hemingway's. We drive from Falls Church, VA just to hang out on the bay which is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately tonight there was a thunderstorm that popped up out of nowhere. Which was fine. we were easily accommodated in the inside dining room. The service was great as usual. The staff is always welcoming. The only thing I did not appreciate too much for was a high amount of flies that were inside of the dining room. The food was pretty good. The only thing I have to say that the corn was a little old I'm looking. Definitely something to try anytime you're coming or going to the ocean.
