We enjoyed our meal at helm and would be interested to come back and try more menu items, especially appetizers!
When we arrived at 9:15, the dining room was almost unbearably loud. Our server had to shout descriptions of the menu items to be heard. Luckily, the noise levels dropped as the dining room emptied, but I can only imagine that earlier diners might have been shouting at each other to be heard for the entire meal.
The menu is so interesting. It goes without saying that each dish will include more ingredients than the main three listed on the chalkboard, but I was still surprised to find that the escargot, apple, and hazelnut starter was 70% fingerling potatoes with the listed ingredients hiding underneath. We were happier with the zucchini, steak, fontina starter– the melted cheese sauce is to die for. My main– white bean, brisket, cabbage– looked thrown on the plate, but was tasty. The mustard sauce was totally delicious, but there wasn't enough of it! The lamb main was fantastic, tender, and aromatic. For dessert we had the ice cream sandwich. That burnt marshmallow ice cream is genius– rich and creamy, with soft marshmallow throughout.
Great menu and everything ordered was great. Nice portions. A couple of large groups were there and it was very loud. Service with only 2 people was still outstanding. A definite return restaurant.
helm never disappoints; this meal was especially wonderful, varied in flavors and with the usual sense of adventure I so admire in these chefs.
Another great experience, will likely return until I've tried everything on the menu.
I’ve been here a handful of times, never once disappointed - The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the service is great, and the menu is always unique and delicious.
With the closings of Russet and Will, Helm is the undeniable #1 Philly restaurant!
A very creative and delicious menu. Great place to share meals. Also a great BYOB
While it was a little noisy in the place, the food was fresh, well-cooked and seasoned, and unique. The atmosphere was very casual and the food was incredible. I would definitely recommend going there and will definitely be going back again.
Loved it, first time dinner but definitely will be checking it out again.
Delicious and creative. Service is terrific, and Abigail's knowledge of a frequently changing menu was very impressive!
My husband and I were visiting Philly, and upon the recommendation of our cousin, came here to eat. We were a party of 4 and everybody loved their food (plates "licked clean"). I was the only vegan, and they accommodated me with an entree prepared especially by the chef. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
What a lovely evening. The food is creative and exceptional. The lamb and pork dishes were prepared beautifully and tasted as good as they looked. The waitress was charming.
Fantastic, as always. Some variations of classic helm dishes, some totally new. Fried heirloom tomato with oyster mushrooms was especially delicious!
Service was friendly and helpful. We had a lovely table in a nook so we were able to talk. Overall the food was unremarkable. Dishes were not plated with any special appeal.
I ordered the carrots to start, my husband the fried tomato. Large pieces with sauce and cheese. Cod followed as entree. I found it unappetizing personally. A few muscles and pieces of cauliflower with chunky fish inn top. Tried a peanut inspired dessert. Weird flavor profile and consistency. No reason to go back for me. I like a menu where not every dish is paired with cheese. Rustic is ok but I feel there is an art to it that lacked here.
The overall presentation was nice, however the fish was so fishy it was basically inedible, particularly the Tuna, the lamb was very gritty. Seeing other reviews I had high hopes.
Helm highlights the seasonal, and the local, with ingredients driving the menu. It is carefully balanced and the dishes are creative without being over the top. The roasted carrot appetizer was the most delightful surprise, the cod sweet and subtly flavorful, the lamb perfectly cooked. The lemon gateau was out of this world. Service is exceptional as well.
Helm is just simply amazing
The food and atmosphere were amazing! We’ll be back!
Overall amazing, inventive and fresh food. Love the casual chalkboard with daily specials. Our server was terrific. It is very noisy though so you do have to speak loud to have a conversation.
Second time dining here ... had all new dishes except the Barley Gnocchi. It was still just as amazing! I am so happy they are consistently fantastic. The Gateau is a must for dessert. Wow!
Food was excellent as was the service. I did not like the music- was too loud and not relaxing music. The menu board was difficult to read -it seemed disorganized-we definitely needed the waitress to describe every dish-this seems like an easy fix. I like the byob. Overall we had a great meal and enjoyed Helm
Some of the food was a little salty but overall everything was great
Helm’s seasonal menu doesn’t disappoint. Can’t wait to go back!
Extremely salty food, not well executed dishes. The service was good which made the experience average.
Great food relaxing atmosphere
Service friendly and efficient
Interesting neighborhood and restaurant, terrific food. Unpleasant music being played too loud!
Humble ingredients paired and prepared excellently. Love this place
Holy amazing!! So inventive. Really awesome flavor profiles ... high quality ingredients.
Can't wait to come back again! There were 4 of us; we split 4 appetizers, each had an entree, one side dish to share, and then split 2 desserts. Not one dish was even mediocre. Loved the Tomato with peanut miso, the Cod with red curry, and the Barley gnocchi. I love the New American style so this is absolutely top 5 in Philly in my book. Can't wait to come again!
Excellent BYOB farm to table. Wanted to order everything on the menu.
This is absolutely one of the best restaurants in the city. Rotating chalkboard menu with amazing service. BYOB.
A fabulous evening. The food was exceptional. The kind of exceptional that makes you stop talking just to appreciate the flavors. The atmosphere is very nice if you like understated and a bit funky, which I do.
Each of us all thought the apps and entrees were over seasoned, over salted. Too many flavors especially in the ravioli w chorizo. Tasted like is was coated in taco seasoning. Overall a little disappointed.
We never have a bad meal at helm. And it's never better than summertime, when the local produce options add to the creativity of the dishes. Plus parking in the summer is easier. Looking forward to our next meal already.
Great food and service! Always creative and fresh selections. Love a good BYO.
Our son and daughter-in-law tuned us into Helm. This was out 2nd time, the food and hospitality were wonderful. Tip'o the cap to the chef!
Food was excellent. The service was excellent. Very friendly staff. They could get a few more veggie options though.
Innovative, fresh food, well prepared and served. Server was excellent and explained every dish without being asked. Veggies were particularly good and very unusual. Sauces were prepared nicely and were good matches for the appetizers and entrees. Desserts were excellent and not overpriced. Difficult to park in the area, but definitely worth the trip. They do not offer espresso which I like to have after the meal. This is a good find and one of the best meals we've had lately. All 4 in our party were pleased and BYO is a plus.
Fantastic dinner and service. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Excellent food. We tried a lot, and every dish was terrific. Very impressive.
Just wonderful fresh and flavorful dishes awesome combos
