Helen's Ratings and Reviews
I doubted I walked into a wrong restaurant after glancing inside of it since it is small and not very formal, which doesn't seem to match what other people comments about this restaurant. However, I was really surprised by the quality of food. I ordered an appetizer of pork belly and duck breast for entree. Both dishes taste so good! It is amazing that this small restaurant is able to cook such a delicious food. I highly recommend this restaurant for people who love tasty food.
We enjoy the creativity of the chefs at Helen's. Food is definitely not boring and not something you will prepare for yourself at home. However, the burgers are very good here, too! Shrimp and Grits is always a good "go to." We recommend Helen's to visitors and locals.
Another great Restaurant Week dinner at Helen’s! Promptly seated by courteous hostess, great service all evening. Apps, entrees and desserts were seasonal done right, flavorful, and generously portioned. Good veg options. Fan charm of tin-paneled ceiling and candle light made a good meal even better.
Helen's is fantastic. The owners and staff are wonderful people, and true professionals, both front- and back-of-house. The food is uniformly excellent. The ingredients are fresh and expertly prepared. The only thing that isn't perfect about Helen's is the noise level, which they can't do much about. Being a small space with a lot of hard surfaces, it can get loud. With everything else it's got going for it, though, Helen's is worth it. Try it, you'll like it.
We went to Helen's for restaurant week. The food was delicious, but the waitress--although very friendly--was slow on follow-through. We had to ask for a wine list three times, and our wine (ordered by the glass) was not delivered until we were finishing our entrees.
The service was some of the worst I have experienced. One drink at a time with 5 minutes in between the next drink being delivered to the others at the table. Advertisement for a beet salad and there were more radishes than the flimsy beets. Shrimp and grits were over cooked and dessert was stale.
Went to Helen’s to have a casual birthday celebration with my two adult children. Everything was absolutely delicious. I had the rockfish, my daughter had the spaghetti squash and my son had hanger steak. The sautéed calamari and bread was also seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. Yum!
Helen's Rocks. We don't get there enough and we get there at least twice a month. The Chef is amazing and we like the little booths at the back across from the table. Reasonably priced wine. Reasonably priced entrees. We've had a string of bad meals with snooty servers recently in Richmond and I wanted to take a moment to say that in the 20 years I have been taking ladies to Helen's that I have never had a bad meal, been rushed or been treated badly. Helen's is one of the 10 things I love most about Richmond.
This was our second time at Helen's over the past month or so, this time with good friends. Delicious apps and entrées. The pork shank was oh so yummy with dark rich flavors. Good wine and beer selection. Fun and friendly service. Thanks for a great experience. Definitely recommend!
We noticed the quiet atmosphere and that was especially appealing. We had the calamari to start and it was excellent - probably one of the best calamari dishes I have tasted. However, both my husband and I commented almost at the same time how salty our entrees were. He had the shrimp and grits and I had the rockfish. Our server asked how we were doing WAY too much. I felt a little rushed because as soon as we were done she immediately handed us our check.
What a terrific discovery to experience Helens. We live a few blocks from there, walked by it numerous times, and always considered it a 'lunch' place. When exploring new places to have dinner w our children who live in Richmond, they also thought it was more of a lunch place so had never tried it for dinner. Helens kept popping up in my search for restaurants so we decided to support our neighborhood eatery.
Cozy, unpretentious, and amazing copper finishes as part of its decor (esp the copper ceiling) made for a relaxing place to chat and catch up w our children.
We each had different entrees & main courses- verde burger, hanger steak, rockfish, and a unique pasta dish as the night's special.
All superb! While it does have lines at lunchtime, we enjoyed the less frenetic dinner time. Outdoor & indoor dining abailable!
Helen's is a great neighborhood spot with excellent food, a delightful list of cocktails and a very friendly staff. This last visit was to introduce out-of-town visitors to Helen's. We had the rock fish and the shrimp and grits. Both were great choices. I would highly recommend this fun, local restaurant!
A Fan neighborhood establishment that never disappoints. Had dinner with my millennial son last weekend and we both really enjoyed it. Good drinks, good food, and like the atmosphere. The pork chop special was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. The burger 🍔 had quite a kick (as desired) and was delicious. I always know I'll get a good meal and good service here at Helen's.
We love everything about this restaurant. The food and the atmosphere are amazing ! We have become regulars here and are always recommending the restaurant to new people ! The chefs are always coming up with creative culinary ideas and the menu changes quite often . The mac and cheese is to die for!!
Great casual dining in a friendly neighborhood setting. Small and intimate restaurant. The food is surprisingly good for such a small unassuming location and building. Worth a try for sure. This was our second visit and we will be back again. Most definitely order the chicken breast wrapped in bacon.
