Excellent food! All 4 of us got different entrees, and we all loved them. The cocktails and appetizers were also quite good and dessert was a good choice. The ambience (laidback, conversational) completed the meal.
This was our first visit to Helen's. The menu offers a nice mix of indulgent and healthy options. Everything we had was well prepared with perfectly balanced flavor.
Easily one of the best meals we've ever had. The flavors were complex and layered. Also, you wouldn't think this is the place to get the best burger ever, but it is. Incredible!
Special is the best way to describe Helen's - fabulous staff, fresh, creative food. Can't wait to go back!
Bland food, slow service. The waitress obviously forgot to put our order in and then ignored us. We had to flag her down to ask what was going on. It took an hour to get our dinner which turned out to be very bland. We all had different items and none of us enjoyed our meals. I will definitely not be returning. It was also extremely hot in the restaurant which was very uncomfortable. I do not recommend.
Food and service great. Room extremely hot even though they said the air conditioning was on.
Helen's was decent, although it had been a little overstated as far as the food goes. Enjoyed the decor and friendly service but food left something to be desired.
The wait staff were very attentive but not overbearing. The quality of the beet salad and cobia entree was exceptional.
Slightly underwhelmed. I guess with Richmond Restaurant Week you kind of get what you get sometimes but the dishes and service were just okay. The weather was perfect so we sat on the patio and the table next to us kept pulling up chairs for passerbys creeping further into our space and getting really loud. That’s certainly not Helen’s fault but it definitely didn’t help the experience.
This is my favorite place for brunch but it had been awhile since I had dinner here. We took advantage of restaurant week and enjoyed the prix fixe dinner just this week- it was absolutely delish! A perfect spring menu- all four at our table were extremely satisfied with our choices, the service & presentation!
Where do I start...the positives. The food was top-notch. We got the calamari and the Spiced lamb meatballs to start and everyone in our party enjoyed the appetizers. For entree I got the bacon -stuffed chicken.....so good. I highly recommend that dish. Highly!!! The customs cocktails they served were very good and had a good amount of alcohol in them. Definitely not watered down. Now to the service definitely over shadowed the good food and drinks. It started off promising but after almost an hour of waiting for appetizers, watching tables that came after us get their dinner meals it became a little frustrating. Our drinks were empty for quite awhile and get the waitresses attention without causing a scene was difficult. When we asked about appetizers she had no answer. Some how, less then 15 minutes later we had appetizers, but still had to ask about getting more drinks. The dinner came out shortly after. For us the service did put a damper on the evening.
The food was excellent. We found the restaurant on Open Table. Great find. We would definitely go back.
Absolutely delicious food options, great wine selection; the entire part was impressed!
We’ll be back!
Saw some friends.
We loved it! Food was great and service was great. We will be back!
Great small plates
I love the food at Helen’s, but after this experience I will never go back unless the owner addresses the horrible waitstaff and therefore unwelcoming and unfriendly environment. Our waitress was short and unfriendly from the second she approached us. She was rushing us the entire night even though our reservation was at 815. She came across as irritated by everything we asked or did. When we were finished with entrees she didn’t even offer us dessert and said we had to close out by 10. As far as I am concerned, it doesn’t matter how good your food is. If the environment and service isn’t 100% focused on making it a special night for the customer then you will never be successful! I hope to hear about improvements so I can support Helen’s as a local business.
Always a great menu - good variety and excellent selections
We really enjoyed our meal: food was very good, service was fine, it was a nice way place for an intimate conversation.
This was my first time dining at Helen's- great experience. It is a tiny spot with a romantic feel to it; great for a date night! The drink menu was great, we all ordered a round or two of beers. We started with the beet salad. It was ok. I ordered the scallops dish as my entree... amazing! I would order it again. Others in my group ordered the shrimp and grits and the pizza special. The shrimp and grits were apparently also phenomenal. I would love to come back to try the gnocchi.
Great place for dinner and brunch Vibrant atmosphere and cool staff
Excellent food as always but waitress was slow and inattentive- she had more important things to do rather than serve us
We waited for a half hour beyond our reservation time to be seated at an empty table that was not occupied by diners. While the food is outstanding, the wait for it is very long.
Excellent food but very pricey. Cooking heavy on oils and sauces.
Helens is a real treasure! Our food was delicious and the staff friendly. Truly a great neighborhood treasure
Food was great. Perfect little setting on Main st. for a date. A bit pricey however and a limited menu.
I was very impressed with the food, presentation and great service
Coming back next month to celebrate my birthday
Great food at Helens as always
Food was tasty. Service was great. Always enjoyable.
Great atmosphere and food. Had to wait 15 minutes past our reservation to be seated, but sitting at the bar for a few minutes wasn’t a big deal.
Better than expected
Much better than our last visit!
I've been waiting to go back to Helen's for quite a while. Finally, made it back for a casual Sat. evening after a movie. It's a delightful neighborhood location with great character, which makes for a ...."one of the regular places."
I opted out of the mussels, even though it was the primary reason I wanted to go. My wife was in the veg mood and ordered most of the veggies on the menu. (These don't seem to show up on-line but they are dishes.)
Unfortunately, after my perfect martini, I've lost track - brussels, cauliflower, roasted, maybe some manchego - hmm, missing the others. In the meantime I savored the gnocchi's, which qualifies for a signature dish.
Despite my rating, Helen's is not perfect. Personally, I don't feel comfortable if it's perfect.
Helen's makes our everyday dining Romantic. Thank you for keeping me married. Thank you for the wonderful 2-3 times per months of being able to cuddle in the back booths. Thank you for healthy and fresh food. Behind the behind Fire and EMS Protection (#1 favorite thing about our city), you are the star of my #2 favorite thing (great dining scene). Thank you for, well: everything.
I went to Helen's with a friend to take advantage of an expiring Groupon. A few other friends had recommended the place and I wasn't sure what to expect after looking at their menu online because it looked like a smaller menu. When we got there, I was very pleased to see a few more options than what was published online. I got the pork shank with gouda grits and Brussel sprouts and it was amazing!!! My friend got the burger and said it was delicious, she rarely eats an entire burger in one sitting but her plate was clear by the time we finished! I definitely recommend Helen's - food was amazing, staff friendly and atmosphere had the Richmond Fan feel :)
We used to frequent Helen's in the 90's every Friday night. It was one of the best restaurants in town. I feel like it went through a time of transition and we stopped going. It is great now and I am so delighted we tried it again recently. It is one of our favorites. We took friends and they loved it.
The place was small and cozy. I loved the decor and our window seats.
Our dinner at Helen’s was just fabulous. The food was delicious and service was very attentive. Was beyond my expectations. We’ll be back soon.
Food is excellent. Did not like sitting in the back room. Very stuffy.
I rave and rave and rave here on Open Table about Helen's and rightfully so. It's always a romantic treat, even though we have been there at least two hundred times in 20 years. The menu recently changed and a couple of old favorites gone and new favorites to try have arrived. To those of you that own the other 3,000 restaurants in Central Virginia--do some opposition research here, at Helen's--they get it right while most of you don't.
