Disappointing night. Menu has changed.
Helen burger not as good as normal-overcooked. The fries were a disaster. Was told no longer have a fryer for fries.
This was one of our regular hangouts- not sure anymore.
Helen’s has been a restaurant we’ve enjoyed going to for years, but we will not be going back there until we hear that the service has improved. This is disappointing as the food is truly outstanding.
We enjoyed a burger and Char for our entrees at Helen's. Both were prepared well and were tasty. I particularly enjoyed the salad with green goddess dressing, service was good, and we always look forward to dining here. We live the brunch meals also, and we look forward to our next meal at Helen's within the next month or so. This is a great neighborhood spot with street parking.
The Pinot Noir was very warm and not good at all.
It was ok. I was expecting a little mire upscale. The staff is friendly but I didn't like the food enough to return.
Always enjoy coming here for food! The chef is amazing, and they are very vegan friendly.
Warmly greeted, moved my table to where I could watch the chefs, server let me sample the wine, chefs prepared a tomato/corn gazpacho followed by a steak over gouda grits followed by a lemon&poppy seed churro ... all were "get again good"!
Summer nights with dinner at Helen's and then walking around the Fan are part of the fabric of Richmond. Clay is one of our favorite chefs and he never disappoints. Thank you for letting us cuddle in the booths and feel relaxed and at-home.
Very good food. But our server was weak. Seemed like an eternity to have our order taken. No follow up on our food.
We have heard so much about Helen's that we went there Friday night, to me it did not live up to all the hype the food was just ok, the server was just ok, the drinks were ok. Nothing there was special! Sorry
Amazing as always!!
Fantastic food with even better service! All the staff were extremely nice and welcoming. Our waitress was awesome and made fantastic recommendations. Highly recommend!
Most amazing gazpacho I've ever had...avocado, cucumber, and crab...beautifully presented as well as a perfect harmony of flavors!
The food is always excellent at Helen’s and this was no exception. I had the artichoke pasta dish and the flavoring was transcendent. My son had the scallops and was equally pleased. Our waitress suggested a very good pinot that topped it off. The atmosphere is casual but also special. Thanks for another great meal.
I hadn't been to Helen's before, but heard they had a great brunch. I had a Groupon that didn't include brunch, so we went for some appetizers. Usually when we go new places, we get a few small plates to share for more variety. The Caprese Salad was phenomenal! The tomato jam was delicious and I could have honestly ordered another. The short rib was very good too. The corn had great flavor, but it was on the cob. Have you tried to awkwardly cut corn off the cob at a nicer restaurant? There isn't a dainty way to do it. Haha!
The service was friendly, the space was perfect for a date, and the kitchen was open, which I love. We will definitely come back to try their brunch sometime.
Another fine meal at Helen’s! Creative, new American/Southern cuisine executed flawlessly. A nice wine list also. Service was very professional and amicable. All in all, a very lovely experience.
Excellent meal. Nice staff. Quality food.
The burrata caprese was amazing. The scallops were also delish. My husband and friend had their burgers switched (well vs med rare)and the kitchen did not hold bacon as requested. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars
Great food and great service!
My roommate and I went to dinner for her birthday. It was the summer menu, everything looked amazing but we ended up deciding on the scallops and a burger that had whipped feta. Both dishes were delicious!! We can’t wait to go back and try their next seasonal menu!
Everything we ordered was beautifully presented and delicious. The burrata salad was to die for! The place could benefit from some soundproofing, but that is a relatively minor complaint.
We hadn't been to Helen's in a few years and it's as good as ever. Creative cuisine, interesting wines, great service, and a typical Richmond, Virginia Fan vibe! Recommended!
This was our first visit to Helen's. Each of the four of us ordered a different entree--scallops, cobie, shrimp and grits, and flank steak. Everyone said their meal was outstanding. The wait staff was friendly. The music was too loud for us though. We would return when in the area.
Well worth the money had a nice time nice dinner we'll go back for dinner and love their Sunday brunch one at 5:30 was nice and quiet and not that many people
Pleasantly surprised by Helen's. Stopped in for a late dinner. Thought it would be more of a casual burger/pub food type of place, but no, it is a "real" restaurant with a variety of small and large plates that were "fancier" than we had anticipated. I'm not complaining though! It was really good. Our salads were made with fresh local ingredients and had some originality that made them special. Our entrees were delicious and nicely plated. Nice wait staff. Only complaint was we got stuck in the little back room near the restrooms. While a bit quieter than the main dining area, we felt a little forgotten at times and like we'd been sent away from the fun. So, next time we will wait for a table in the big room! Plus, we were watched by everyone waiting for the bathrooms. We were too full for dessert, but I'm pretty sure it would be good! Hope to come back soon for Sunday brunch which we hear is killer!
Most of the dishes, esp the app's were great. Two of us had the cobia and it is really quite fishy and oily. Worst part was the lack of AC; it was so warm in there our family had to shower afterwards. Not good.
Excellent food! All 4 of us got different entrees, and we all loved them. The cocktails and appetizers were also quite good and dessert was a good choice. The ambience (laidback, conversational) completed the meal.
Helen's is a favorite place. Clay is an amazing chef. The specials are always wonderful, the ambiance is perfect, not over- or under-stated. We are lucky to have Helen's in RVA.
This was our first visit to Helen's. The menu offers a nice mix of indulgent and healthy options. Everything we had was well prepared with perfectly balanced flavor.
This used to be a favorite but I had not been in years. We used a living social coupon to go for a regular date night. It was incredible. Still as delicious as I remember from years and years ago.
Easily one of the best meals we've ever had. The flavors were complex and layered. Also, you wouldn't think this is the place to get the best burger ever, but it is. Incredible!
Special is the best way to describe Helen's - fabulous staff, fresh, creative food. Can't wait to go back!
Bland food, slow service. The waitress obviously forgot to put our order in and then ignored us. We had to flag her down to ask what was going on. It took an hour to get our dinner which turned out to be very bland. We all had different items and none of us enjoyed our meals. I will definitely not be returning. It was also extremely hot in the restaurant which was very uncomfortable. I do not recommend.
Food and service great. Room extremely hot even though they said the air conditioning was on.
Helen's was decent, although it had been a little overstated as far as the food goes. Enjoyed the decor and friendly service but food left something to be desired.
The wait staff were very attentive but not overbearing. The quality of the beet salad and cobia entree was exceptional.
Slightly underwhelmed. I guess with Richmond Restaurant Week you kind of get what you get sometimes but the dishes and service were just okay. The weather was perfect so we sat on the patio and the table next to us kept pulling up chairs for passerbys creeping further into our space and getting really loud. That’s certainly not Helen’s fault but it definitely didn’t help the experience.
This is my favorite place for brunch but it had been awhile since I had dinner here. We took advantage of restaurant week and enjoyed the prix fixe dinner just this week- it was absolutely delish! A perfect spring menu- all four at our table were extremely satisfied with our choices, the service & presentation!
Where do I start...the positives. The food was top-notch. We got the calamari and the Spiced lamb meatballs to start and everyone in our party enjoyed the appetizers. For entree I got the bacon -stuffed chicken.....so good. I highly recommend that dish. Highly!!! The customs cocktails they served were very good and had a good amount of alcohol in them. Definitely not watered down. Now to the service definitely over shadowed the good food and drinks. It started off promising but after almost an hour of waiting for appetizers, watching tables that came after us get their dinner meals it became a little frustrating. Our drinks were empty for quite awhile and get the waitresses attention without causing a scene was difficult. When we asked about appetizers she had no answer. Some how, less then 15 minutes later we had appetizers, but still had to ask about getting more drinks. The dinner came out shortly after. For us the service did put a damper on the evening.
The food was excellent. We found the restaurant on Open Table. Great find. We would definitely go back.
