The shrimp and grits was the best I've ever eaten. But the meals were expensive and no bread or salad included. The waitress did not ask us if we wanted an appetizer, and she never asked me if I wanted another drink though she asked the two men at our table twice. the waitress brought our bill without asking if we were ready and then said she couldn't use our coupon if we split the bill. she worked it out, but it felt like she wanted us to hurry and leave even though our bill for 4 people was almost $200. I probably won't plan to go back.
Love Helens but thought the new menu was a downgrade from the former one - and the Rockfish dish we ordered, while good, was not as tasty as the cobia dish that was on the former menu.
Lost its bistro cache. Food still good but very short menu. Gone over the top bohemian.
Great as always. Good menu with great food. Try it, you'll love it.
Service was A++. I like the cozy/intimate atmosphere of Helens. I was not impressed with any of the food we ordered. Started with the sweet potato soup (special of the day). It was alright...had a hint of heat and sweetness. But it was just that one note at the beginning with no follow up. For entrees we had the duck and pork chop. Both were cooked well and a good size portion. Where it failed was that everything was sweet, crust on pork chop was sweet, glaze on duck was sweet, celery root purée was sweet. I appreciate some sweetness to a meal. But this just seemed like sugar was in every part of the dish. It really needed balanced out with savory and/or spicy. I do t dissuade people from going to Helens. I just hope the kitchen and chef get the message that they can tone down their sugar scoop and it will greatly enhance the food.
great as always - never disappoint - creative entrees
Twenty plus years ago I was visiting Richmond and stumbled on Helen's and just loved, loved it .. the food was so scrumptious and we were treated like VIPs
So I finally got back last Friday and you lived up to my memories
My brother in law said it was the best steak he ever had. My sister enjoyed the duck and I had the very tasty scallops
Hope it isnt another 20 years!
Let me know if you open a restaurant in Las Vegas or Wisconsin
We were disappointed by the selections for dinner. We had been there 2 other times and enjoyed it very much.
It was my first visit and I loved it. Every dish we tried was delicious: the mussels, carrots, and shrimp & grits. I’d order it again!!
Food quality has went down and service was ok but the prices were high for what we ordered here
Fun neighborhood spot in the Fan. Lots of options on the menu to keep my family (including one vegetarian) happy. It was a bit loud but we all enjoyed our dinners. Good service and ambience.
I truly love Helens! I don’t make it there too often but when I do, the food is ALWAYS fresh and on point. The way the chefs marry the flavors in their food is unlike any other I’ve ever had. Highly recommended!
Helen’s was amazing. We had been wanting to try it but live over 30 minutes away. It was well worth the trip! Our waitress was wonderful and had great recommendations. Drinks were perfect, and we loved the beets & burrata and sautéed calamari appetizers. For our entrees we each got a burger (me the dusty burger and my husband the Helen’s burger). We both think these were the best burgers ever. Cooked perfectly with a fantastic blend of flavors. We will return!!
I just really like this place. What it lacks in perfection it makes up for with personality and so many great taste sensations. I had the mussels in a broth. Helen's mussels are alway outstanding. The NY Strip was a basic order, but I'm really picky about my some things and this just hit the spot - cooked perfectly. Usually, I go for the gnocchi which are always great.
Helen's is a neighborhood mainstay and great spot to go to.
Our reservation was at 7:45, we stood there for 20 minutes before being seated, while there were about 10 tables open.
Had dinner at Helen's Saturday evening. As always the food was great and the staff was welcoming and friendly. Always consistently excellent, menu changes often to keep things interesting.
most talented chef and serving staff
Came for restaurant week, very cute small local place, wonderful service. Warm and romantic inside. Food was excellent.
We were a party of four during restaurant week. Each of us was impressed with the items we chose to eat. Two of us had a Porkchop that was very thick and big and cooked to perfection as well as seasoned and garnished very creatively. I found out later it was had been brined initially. The appetizers were very creative and delicious and I enjoyed the fact that they were vegetarian . My roasted beets with burrata, grapes, cashews and a touch of orange probably in the vinaigrette was simply amazing I could eat it as a full course meal. I believe this is the hidden gym which doesn’t get enough Presse . Their brunches are delicious as well
Since it was restaurant week they were serving items that are usually not on their menu, and they were fabulous. Their regular menu is great too.
My Helens experiences are always positive. The food is always so much better than you might expect from a slightly dive-y local bar. LOVED the leek sausage in my squash soup. Great vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Helen's is one of our favorite restaurants in Richmond. The food is always incredible, I can honestly say that we've never had a bad meal or that I've had something that I wouldn't order again.
Our waitress was great. The bartender was great- made a special drink for me based off of what I typically like in a drink. My boyfriend liked his meal- burger. I, however, was disappointed with the steak. It was cold, under cooked & the sauce on top was not good. I probably would not go back.
Always reliable food, a little more noisy than usual but it was a Friday evening.
The salad with green goddess was one of the top 3 salads I have ever had. The protein of our entrees (chicken, fish) were hot and delicious, although they were atop beds that were barely warm on a room temperature plate. The wait staff was professional and delightful and the ambiance inviting.
Always an amazing meal! Despite our reservation being in the middle of a hurricane we were still doted on and served amazing food. Love love LOVE Helens!
Disappointing night. Menu has changed.
Helen burger not as good as normal-overcooked. The fries were a disaster. Was told no longer have a fryer for fries.
This was one of our regular hangouts- not sure anymore.
Helen’s has been a restaurant we’ve enjoyed going to for years, but we will not be going back there until we hear that the service has improved. This is disappointing as the food is truly outstanding.
We enjoyed a burger and Char for our entrees at Helen's. Both were prepared well and were tasty. I particularly enjoyed the salad with green goddess dressing, service was good, and we always look forward to dining here. We live the brunch meals also, and we look forward to our next meal at Helen's within the next month or so. This is a great neighborhood spot with street parking.
The Pinot Noir was very warm and not good at all.
It was ok. I was expecting a little mire upscale. The staff is friendly but I didn't like the food enough to return.
Helen's never disappoints. We love cuddling in the booths and watching Chef cook our meal, enjoying the view of the restaurant and knowing that it is one of our favorite things--not just favorite restaurant--but favorite thing--about Richmond.
Always enjoy coming here for food! The chef is amazing, and they are very vegan friendly.
Warmly greeted, moved my table to where I could watch the chefs, server let me sample the wine, chefs prepared a tomato/corn gazpacho followed by a steak over gouda grits followed by a lemon&poppy seed churro ... all were "get again good"!
Summer nights with dinner at Helen's and then walking around the Fan are part of the fabric of Richmond. Clay is one of our favorite chefs and he never disappoints. Thank you for letting us cuddle in the booths and feel relaxed and at-home.
Very good food. But our server was weak. Seemed like an eternity to have our order taken. No follow up on our food.
We have heard so much about Helen's that we went there Friday night, to me it did not live up to all the hype the food was just ok, the server was just ok, the drinks were ok. Nothing there was special! Sorry
Amazing as always!!
Fantastic food with even better service! All the staff were extremely nice and welcoming. Our waitress was awesome and made fantastic recommendations. Highly recommend!
Most amazing gazpacho I've ever had...avocado, cucumber, and crab...beautifully presented as well as a perfect harmony of flavors!
