Helena Ratings and Reviews
We had a wonderful meal at Helena and will return again soon! My husband and I met with friends for dinner and it was the right mix of elegant, casual, fun and romantic. We will definitely return. The wait staff was excellent and provided very good recommendations on how to navigate the menu....the tasting menus are excellent!
It is not a bad restaurant but the owner or managers need to learn that people do not like being rushed. It is good to give people a few minutes between courses to relax, chat etc. Not everyone there is for business unless that is the focus of the restaurant in which case please advertise as such!
Great food, great service. My wife, who is always in restaurant with clients (business owners) says it's one of the best she's been at.
Excellente nourriture, excellent service.
Visiting Montreal & Helena recommended by locals w unique Portuguese emphasis & seafood. We were not disappointed! Quality personal service, beautiful presentation, sumptuous tapas (we ordered the tapas tasting menu & fish), wonderful Portuguese wine & dessert "tapas" that you couldn't resist. Worth another trip to Montreal soon. And we met Helena on the way out! Memorable!
I have been there a few times this year and had always enjoyed my meals. However, this time I was a little bit disappointed. Not sure if the " Montreal a table" was a factor as the food was not as it was the other times. We were a party of 3 and for the 1st time, we didn't even finished our meals,,. service was great, but for the price, I will reconsider on coming back.
I went as part of Montreal's food week and was really impressed with the food. The shrimps were the best that I have had and the pork was cooked perfectly. My only regret was that we were seated across from the open kitchen in what felt like a hall connecting the front seating area of the restaurant to the rear. I think I would have enjoyed the experience much more if we had better seats. The portions were not large but definitely sufficient and larger than many fine dining restaurants.
The quality and tastefulness of the food at Helena has tanked since it first opened. I was one of the first customers through Helena's doors when it first opened years ago. At that time it did not disappoint as a follow up to Portus Calle.
To call Helena a Portuguese restaurant now is a bad joke where the PUNCHline is the check!
The Caldo Verde, my favorite, did not taste anything remotely like a Caldo Verde...more of a thick potato soup instead of the slightly cloudy broth it is supposed to have, the kale obviously not cooked long enough in the broth to infuse its distinct flavor. Try it at Casa Minhota and compare!
The cod croquettes are a horrible, tasteless mush filled with potatoes and little cod...and what little cod there was, was ground up with its spines! They do not compare to those from Patisserie Notre-Maison that always remind me of my grandmother.
The main cod dish was well cooked but horribly salty. All sides were uninspired and mediocre.
The service was rushed and inattentive and we felt obliged to chug our wine down.
All told, I left feeling very embarrassed for inviting my guests to sample Portuguese food for the first time and subjecting them to this.
Luckily I was the one picking up the check, I left them with a sincere apology for the evening, promising to bring them to a more authentic Portuguese restaurant in the near future. I can only hope they accept. I have since retracted my recommendation to Helena to everyone within my sphere of influence so that they may be spared the above.
P.S.Every single Portuguese is an ambassador...to serve up such tripe and label it as Portuguese is a great disservice to our culture.
Having been to Helena a couple times before, so the bar was set pretty high as for my expectations. I hadn't thought that since it was MTL à table, that the regular menu wouldn't be available to us, but I completely understand for the logistics.
As a first experience, my girlfriend really enjoyed it, but it wasn't as satisfying for me as I have been so impressed with the food during my previous visits.
I would still recommend to anyone.
Pros: Nice ambiance, wine list and staff.
Cons: It's a good restaurant, but pricey for what it offers. Montreal is famous for having bad and pretentious restaurants that charge you a lot, and this was a good example of it. Very simple Portuguese food, for the price of gold. I went there for MTL'a table and the menu was a disappointing. I thought the idea of the event was to bring more clients to the restaurants, but apparently, the restaurants are just serving you cheap food. This one did not get a new client from my group. Sorry!
Unfortunately food was under expectations! For 41$, we all felt that we got ripped off. Wine selection is amazing though, waiters are very good and knowledgeable. Food tasted nothing, fish with bread as a sider? Really? Dessert was fantastic though! Chocolate cake!
I would not tecommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to try it with Montréal a table, not worth it:(!
Food was great, service wasn't. service was really too fast. 1st service arrived before the wine bottle we orded and we felt rushed during the entier evening..desapointing! We assumed this was due to the OpenTable event. We would recommand this restaurant but not during OpenTable event.
All was excellent except for the Roast beef which was sent back as being very hard and the waiter came back with another piece mentioning that the first piece was in fact all nerves. However, the 2nd piece was just as hard. Very disappoining. Roast beef cooked in this manner should not be on the menu. The fish was excellent.
Excellent as usual. Had a nice surprise this time with a new plate that was created on-the-fly which was absolutely exceptional. Helena's is always top of my list when bringing family, friends, colleagues or clients out for dinner. Service is professional top-notch and keeps me coming back.
