The noise level was literally UNBEARABLE -- and I don't mind noise that much. I will probably not return for that factor alone. It was just unpleasant. The food was good but expensive. The cheese infused burger was good -- but on an rather boring English muffin with just a little garnish -- presentation was a little flat. The gnocchi was very good -- small portion though. The onion, bacon tart was a little underdone (gooey inside) but good. The dessert was an ill conceived concoction of tastes and textures that didn't really go together. Don't remember what it was called, some creamy pudding like thing with a very hard crunchy things on top with berries? A nice experiment -- but I don't really think it succeeded well. The wine was good but VERY expensive -- and the glass size was so small. If you are going to charge me $16 for a glass of wine can I at least get a full glass? The service WAS exceptional. The waitress was charming, beautiful and very efficient. If it wasn't for the noise I might go back, but when you can't talk without yelling (literally I'm NOT exaggerating) that doesn't lend itself to a romantic dinner date.
Amazing neighborhood gem with perfect seasonal food and one of the best wine lists in sf hands down.
Very well curated and tasteful scene. Delicious and not overwrought food. Very professional staff, but what a bunch of characters! Have to hand it to them, I'm thinking of returning some time soon, maybe this week!
First time trying this restaurant, and at first I was a bit nervous as the neighborhood was a bit rundown and the building is modest from the outside. BUT as two foodie couples, we all had a fabulous meal here and will definitely be coming back. Not sure about those that complained about small portions. We felt the amount was just right. Our waiter was superb and explained that the top of the list was appetizer-size, the bottom with the proteins was larger portions. Great wine list. All 10 dishes ordered by the 4 of us were perfect and delicious, well balanced, original. A true find! My only complaints were that it was a bit noisy at first (we had a large group seated next to us) and a little warm inside the night we were there.
Very good food and service. The noise level was so high that it spoiled the evening. Had to almost shout to be heard the entire meal.
Thank you for a wonderful dinner. We’re still arguing over which was better, the chicken or the steak. Both super delicious!
Nice design and a good neighborhood gem. There is real effort and originality in the menu.
Fantastic evening! Wonderful food, service, and wine list! One of the city’s best!
Having dined here practically since it opened, this restaurant is so very consistent. The service is exemplary, the food always great and the wine list impressive. We feel so fortunate that our favorite restaurant in the city happens to be one of our closest in location.
Love Heirloom.... great food and service!
Our waiter was very helpful in picking wine, divvying up shared plates, and even giving directions/touristy advice! And the he food was truly delicious.
Great evening. Awesome ambiance. Amazing service.
Great food but the restaurant seems understaffed. We did a lot of waiting and waiting. It seems like the policy of adding a 20% gratuity to a large group results in poor service. The food was quite good but my vegetable entree seemed hardly worth $28.
this has to be one of my favorite places in the city. its like if nopa and rich table had a baby. everything is super delicious and its hard not to just order everything on the menu. Don't skip out on ordering the salads and soups because they are perfection.
Great tasting, well prepared farm fresh food. The wine paring complemented the food. The short ribs were very tender and delicious. We were pleased with this meal.
Lovely little spot, delicious food, we were 4 colleagues and had a great dinner.
Lucky to have such a solid fixture in the neighborhood!
Excellent food and attentive service, a definite gem!
Service was very good and friendly, but at this price point the food needs to be very good. Multiple dishes were overly salted and the overall quality of the food preparation was lacking. I’d been here once before and was looking forward to this second visit. Didn’t realize it would be my last
Awesome as always. Our go-to place for a delicious meal!!
Perfect. Like always!
Could not have been better
We had a fabulous dinner. My only reservation is I am a celiac, and something I was served was contaminated with gluten.
Charming neighborhood restaurant. Cosy, warm and inviting and the food is definitely tasty. The asparagus soup with pickled mushrooms was a stand out. Lovely wine list
Great food and service. Docking a point because they don't take American Express.
Excellent ambiance. Restored old building with antique wall paper, rustic wood tables, candles and low light but not in a mysterious or dark way. Open kitchen with seating. Great neighborhood find. Excellent bread (scorching hot). Nice wine. Our food was excellent but they could ease up on the salt. Servers are dressed casually and are very personable.
Fabulous night. Delicious dinner, especially the cabbage salad and short ribs!! Yummy!!
One of my favorite spots for any night of the week or weekend. They offer prix fixe or a la carte but if there's something on the prix fixe that you'd like, they'll let you order the dish.
The owner Matt and the staff are wonderful and some nights you'll catch Matt in the kitchen. Grab a seat at the bar or a table and you won't be disappointed. Extensive wine list to choose from, and some of the best wines we've tasted.
This is a great spot, one of my favorites for a casual but nice dinner. Always friendly attentive services, great well presented food and a nice wines with it. A little on the pricey side but everything is excellent quality so I understand why.
Went to Heirloom Cafe last night after a friend was raving about it. Unfortunately, we were quite underwhelmed with our experience. The place itself is nice and spacious, but way too dark. I should probably mention that I'm not a huge fan of dark restaurants.
The food was a mix bag. We enjoyed the bread, which comes as no surprise since it was from Josey Baker (of The Mill). They definitely charge way too much for it, and I find it ridiculous that they charged for butter and olive oil too, after I'm paying $5 for 5 small slices of bread. The butternut squash soup was nice and warm; it had a wonderful flavor and wasn't overly salty, which we appreciated. The beets in the beet salad were too strongly pickled, although it was interesting to combine beets with homemade almond butter. The little gem salad with delicata squash lacked flavor. It was very muted and not exciting at all. I had to combine the beets with the salad to give it more excitement. The delicata squash did not excite either. For the mains, we ordered the fettucine with mushrooms and truffle and the cioppino. I found the fettucine to be underwhelming; I think I'm a tomato sauce person, so that could have factored into it. The cioppino had high quality seafood in it, but it was way too salty. All in all, I would say it wasn't worth the trip across town.
Excellent dinner in a neighborhood feeling place that is not overly trendy or precious. Open kitchen with bar seating is a real plus. Highly recommended.
Only the noise marred the evening. But that was beyond irritating. How about some efforts at damping the sound?
The atmosphere is wonderful, cozy. The food is consistently excellent!!!
Heirloom is consistently one of the best restaurants in the Mission. It also seems to remain below the radar, for reasons I can't fathom (though, as long as they keep doing what they're doing, I'm not complaining). I had dinner there with three foodies Friday night (including the owner of another, much ballyhooed Mission restaurant), and we were all struck by the quality of the food: the salad was bursting with flavor; the off-menu cheeseburger (with the cheese ground into the beef before cooking) was mouth-watering; the cioppino was atypical, but yummy; and the chicken was my favorite of all -- moist and flavorful and beautifully complemented with a mushroom cream sauce. The servers were attentive and charming. And the lively, candlelit, intimate space is just where you want to be for dinner with friends.
Outstanding salads
Super fresh and delicious cabbage with satsuma mandarin salad. Amazing duck confit. Great Nebbiolo. We love Heirloom Cafe!
Food and service were wonderful. Reservation honored on time.
Only issue was/is noise level, which is high.
Great food selection and wine cellar. Great evening.
I have been to Heirloom several times over the past few years, and have always valued the experience. This time was different. The waiter was arrogant and inexperienced; and the food (although I do appreciate smaller portions) seemed to come in ridiculously tiny quantities. My impression was one of a restaurant that has come to take itself too seriously.
Excellent food; excellent wine list; overall terrific experience.
