About Heck's at Devil's Thumb Ranch

HECK’S - a.k.a. “Hex” - a six sided shape with equidistant lengths, relatively concentric with a center point. That’s the definition. Here’s the history.... The hexagonal room that houses Heck's is a replication of a room in one of our country’s national monuments, The Timberline Lodge located at the base of Mt. Hood, Oregon. We visited the Timberline Lodge in 1999, about the same time we contracted to purchase the Ranch. Taken by the sheer expanse and natural beauty of the hex room at Timberline, we felt there were few buildings that built today with that type of grand and inspiring craftsmanship. After that visit, including a hexagonal room as a centerpiece became the focus in planning the Lodge here at Devil’s Thumb Ranch.

Value of the flat iron steak was poor, no flavor and better similar dinner at Brick house 4o a few miles away. The menu said a pair of crab cakes, really a oair means two. Not one, very misleading!!

Signature chicken soup, Wedge and Tuscan greens salads all delicious. And great, cheerful services. Took our German friend there for a Colorado Western experience and the bison burger.

Wedge salad was good. Chicken was good and hubby's burger was good. Breakfast was just OK .Fruit bowl was lifeless and there was no cream cheese for my bagel.

One of the best places to have dinner in the Winter Park area and surprisingly good value. Will definitely return.

The food just isn't great here. We eat wild rice at home all of the time but none of us ate it here it was way too crunchy. There was too much sauce or salad dressing on everything. It's just a disappointment that they can't be better the other restaurant is amazing!

The service was great, large selection of draft beers made many in our group happy, and a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir capped off a good meal!

We were really looking forward to this dinner and both ordered the $42 dollar steak special. 85% of this cut was fat so there was little to be desired. Broccoli and blue cheese just don’t pair well as an accompanying side. This just wasn’t a polished meal. If we were to go back, I would just stick with a burger.

Not many good vegetarian options but you can make it work. There was one item which was great, but we ate here 2 nights in a row. It would be nice if they had the option to put together sides dishes to make a meal. They specifically would not do that. Or, a pasta dish would be nice too.

Good mountain resort food. Very good to excellent service. Gorgeous views. Prices were good. Remember you are in the mountains in winter at a resort. No where near Vail prices for same overall experience. So decent value. Will be back and recommend it. Photo is from our table looking out over terrain

I love stopping at Heck’s in devils Thumb Ranch for a drink or bite to eat when I’m in the area. Mostly for the ambiance. The food is mediocre at best. So disappointing because the ranch is beautiful!!!

Been here many times but first time they did not have enough servers and service was very slow - management needs to hire more by customers to be served vs tables. There were several large tables (10 people) that really should have their own servers. My table of 4 was given scant attention.

Food is less than spectacular however it is in a spectacular setting. Why there is not a better chef is a quandary as this is a really beautiful spot???? Next time will just grab a cocktail and head to a better restaurant.

Came for my sons birthday while staying at Devils Thumb. While every detail about this resort at breathtaking this restaurant is a true disappointment. The menu is limited and uninspiring, every dish was mediocre/passable and the service was slow and uninformed. Bottom line - Devils Thumb resort is a gem and great experience. Avoid this restaurant however.

We were staying at Devil’s Thumb Ranch for three days, so ate here for two dinners and three breakfasts. This restaurant is woefully understaffed and service is haphazard and slow. Servers (who seem to be unsupervised: whete is the manager?) seem untrained and inexperienced, forgetting food and service items, neglecting to wipe tables between guests (crumbs! smears!), leaving table cleaning rags and sprays on the tables while guests are seated nearby, and having guests wait a long time for initial water, bread, drinks order and check. Often prompting is necessary. Despite all this, servers are friendly, well-meaning and do apologize for slowness and mistakes. Food was good. The physical setting of the Devil’s Thumb Ranch is superb.

I think the menu is getting tired. I had expected a dinner menu but got the same I had for lunch previously. Service was very C- in a situation where the restaurant was fairly empty. Appetizer came without the bread/crackers to go with it.....they arrived a bit later. Soup came with the meal rather than before. The food was excellent but I think I would recommend Heck's for lunch not dinner.

This experience was disappointing for our first time visiting Devil's Thumb Ranch. We arrived for our reservation and the hostess cleared off a spot near the window with an incredible view. We then waited almost 10 minutes, and had to ask for a server. We then ordered Bloody Mary's, Biscuits & Gravy, and the DTR Wagyu Beef Flatiron Steak & Eggs. Overall, the food was really underwhelming. The biscuits were good but the gravy pretty much just tasted like flour. The cheesy grits desperately needed salt and the Wagyu was better than we were expecting. Overall, the prices were way too high for the quality of food we received and the service was not great.

Went for a special occasion and was looking forward to being able to eat and have drinks while at the resort, however the food was subpar. Ordered the grain bowl which tasted like the oil had been burnt and was overly salted. Not what we were expecting for a "healthy" option that caused us to leave property for the rest of the meals.

We had the "table for Two" by the Fireplace. The table is fine for the Pub, apps and a drink- NOT FOR DINING. bad chairs, no leg room- coffee table! Felt small and looked down on witht eh sea of High Top Table surrounding.
The timing on the Food was really bad- a FULL plate of Apps arrived only a few minutes prior, and no room for the main dinner. Waiter said it was the Kitchen's fault. We knew better. Would only have drinks there next time. Oh, and over priced. $20 for two beers with tip. really?

Great server, Ashton was fantastic but the support staff was lacking. Had the steak and it was like butter with good flavor. Side salad was served on main plate and was warm and wilted, french fries were also warm, not hot. Plating could be improved.

Beautiful archtecture, great service (David was our server), good wine list, delicious food. Menu was somewhat limited ( we were hoping for the waygu meatloaf but it was not offered), but it was a week night and the season is winding down. A fine experience overall.

Beautiful views of mountains from outdoor patio. Lots of families with kids and plenty for them to do while waiting for food. Picturesque with horses in fenced area and at least one wedding going on. Food was delicious and somewhat reasonably priced, however wine was quite expensive and pour was skimpy. Overall a great experience!

Food was good for the most part except a special of the day beef ravioli, which was very tough. A table next to us sent theirs back and was overheard being told by the manager the whole batch was tough, after he waited for 20 plus extra minutes. We also asked for a second cup of soup for our 9 year-old, which never came despite repeated asks of the waitress. So, excellent setting, order carefully, enjoy the beer and wine selection and don't expect more than you will be receiving.

Been here many times and tonight was a terrible experience. Beer was warm, steaks were cold and it took way too long to eat. Waitress was running around like a chicken when her head cut off and it was very disappointing because we used to love going to this place. To top it off, the waitress even forgot to give me a pen to sign my check. I could hear a lot of other folks complaining so I am going to chalk this up to a bad night and a busy night due to the July 4 holiday crowd.
