About
Unfortunately the restaurant has closed and turned into a bar with only bar food.
I made a reservation for 5 of us to get together for dinner while my husband and I were visiting San Francisco. Our friends had never been to Hecho and we were all very excited. After paying 2 Uber drivers to take us there, we arrive to a sign on the door that they were closed for renovations. I received no call from the restaurant to tell me this, so we had to find an alternative restaurant. Not pleased with this at all. I would have expected they would have notified people who made a reservation. I won't go back, nor would I recommend this place to anyone.
Worst service ever. No one checked on us after our entrees were delivered so we couldn't order more drinks, etc. had to leave our table to find someone to give us the check. Will not return
Our waiter was...disinterested at best, confused our order multiple times, and only spoke to the men at the table, which was weird since the women paid. Then our plates were cleared without asking, and we needed to readdress the bill. It seemed like great experiences for other tables, but...just not for us. Bummed. Wanted this to be a better stand-by neighborhood spot.
The margaritas and fajitas were amazing. Even better was the service. Both Victor and Marquez went beyond the call of duty to make it a great dinner. Thank you.
Wonderful bartender, good food and a relaxing ambience made our date even more enjoyable.
I've been to Hecho twice for brunch and once for dinner and each time, I leave disappointed. For the record, I happen to live across the street from Hecho and I LOVE mexican food so the fact that I've only been here 3 times in a year is very telling. For one, the food at Hecho is overpriced. When I can walk down the street and get some of the best tacos in San Francisco for two dollars a piece, eight dollars for a SINGLE taco is pretty ridiculous. The service is sub-par at best, the ambience is fairly non-existent, so overall, I'd give this place a 2/5.
Also, the menu posted is inaccurate as all of the food is about 3-8 dollars more expensive than is listed here.
Menu at the restaurant was completely different (worse) than what was posted online. Totally lacking reasonable portions of common Mexican food items. Items in the "share" menu not suitable for sharing - individual tacos, for example. $7 tacos! Very overpriced for what you get, even for SF standards. Empty restaurant suggests I'm not the first to have figured this out.
Nice setting and great food! Some items were hard to share, but good menu overall.
Totally over priced for the portions and content of the dishes. This has more of a bar feel than a restaurant. It's cold and minimalist, especially for a Mexican restaurant. Our wait staff got into a spat over who waited on our table. The food was bland and we didn't even see our waiter again until our food was almost gone to ask him for hot sauce. Think of a Chevy's trying to be cool, serving smaller portions, and charging excessively, that is Hecho.
Food, cocktails, and service were all impeccable. I would definitely go back!!!
Food is outstanding. Just took a lot longer to get food due to understaffed.
Curtis (our waiter) is great, and I'm not just saying that because we are both valley refugees. Anyway the food here is all very good. We had Picante Margarita, caramelized cauliflower, short rib quesadilla, pork belly taco, and pozole. I would have each of those again. The margarita has a taste that is very hard to describe. I think the habanero bitters and the Aperol are responsible for a smoky or even dusty taste. Don't be expecting any particular thing.
We went when it opened and so experienced no noise. The walls are hard so I could imagine its being quite noisy when it's busy. The convivial attitude of the staff might encourage that. But as a before theater place it's nice.
The service and the quality of the food were stellar. I've dined here in the past and felt everything was uneven. Not anymore. I'll be back soon.
The wait staff was friendly and warm. The cauliflower small plate was AWESOME.
Loved everything about this place!
Food was fabulous. Can't wait to go back
Great space, good service.
Music blasting which seemed too much for brunch.
Overpriced cocktails.
Overall, a little overpriced.
I got in early and had my choice of tables. I would expect there to be no problem with service at this time. I had to ask for a napkin and cutlery. Although my taco was good, other food other food arrive I did not order.
I've been an Hecho fan since moving to San Francisco a few years ago. Their food is very quality, as are their handmade cocktails. The location is easily accesible by public transportation, and there are numerous bars nearby if you want to get a drink with your dining group afterwards. Pro-tip: GET THE FAJITAS THEY ARE INCREDIBLE.
Skip the jicama salad and get anything else! Margaritas were good, fajitias were ok.
The menu was very different
Really great food and atmosphere. Will be back again and again.
Love Hecho! Chef Cory consistently brings amazing seasonal cuisine to the menu. This go-round was the roaster cauliflower... to die for! Always enjoy the expertly crafted drinks, and the guac is top-shelf! Highly recommended!
The waiter was delightful. Very friendly and the perfect balance of attentive while not being over bearing. Food was delicious as usual and presentation was pretty. The booths are so comfortable to sit in and a good design for conversation. Drinks, while a bit expensive, we very tasty.
Service was awful. Waited forever for appetizers, then some of the main courses followed within two minutes. The remainder -the chemechungas, which were not fully cooked and cold - then arrived five minutes later. Some of the techno song collections were played too loudly, had to shout on occasion to have a conversation.
It was ok, good Mexican food nothing extraordinary, we got the jicama salad guacamole and chips and fajitas. The guacamole was good and they made it to order, leaving out the dairy as we had asked due to food allergies. The jicama salad was Jicama, apple and cinnamon I believe, it too was good. Standard fajitas, we ordered the carne asada and shrimp combo plate, not much carne asada but plenty of shrimp. We did observe our neighbor table had some sort of huge steak that looked amazing, so for that I might be back. But overall this place is a 3 star nothing more, good to go to if you live near by but not if your coming from across the city.
The food was very carb -heavy (in a surprising way), drinks not up to par, and too loud to hear the conversation across our table. If you go, just grab a drink at the bar. Don't stay for the food, which is overpriced and under delivers.
Quinn was our server and he was super attentive, friendly and had great suggestions for what to order.
We were a party of 5 women, first time at Hecho so we shared an assortment of appetizers. I definitely recommend the nachos to start with and it goes so well with their Hecho Margarita, yummy. The short rib quesadilla was my favorite but I also appreciated the simplicity of the carne asada. Everything was delicious and came out reasonably fast considering it was a Saturday night.
Hecho has a low key, Hipster vibe with cool music playing in the background. My friends & I will definitely be back.
Jesse was our server and took great care of us. Wonderful food and drink recommendations. This restaurant is a lot of fun. Love the spiciest ceviche and the pork tacos. I'm still thinking about the Sandía drink. Yummy!
Wrote this place off a while ago but decided to give it another try with friend visiting mostly because we were looking for a cocktail with dinner. Nothing's changed--menu is still lame, overpriced, meh food. Nothing authentic or tasty here, move along. Never again.
Amazing dinner and exceptional service. Thank you Eli for your recommendations and special attention!!! The rib eye and the chili verde were amazing. The cocktails were fun and sexy. Loved it. Recommending to everyone.
Lovely meal. Great service. Good food. Nice atmosphere. Friends and fun. What's not to like?
I have been to Hecho several times in the past. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's good but last Saturday night was less than good. We had a table of 6. The waitress was great. The one thing I've noticed since my 1st time dining there was for the amount of guacamole you get, I think $9 is a bit much. That aside, I often go for the tacos. the fish tacos are usually fresh and flavorful and the carne asada are a good choice. On this visit, the fish taco was completely flavorless and the slaw on it was over dressed. I decided to try the pork belly taco and found it not a lot of flavor and very dry. I'm going to have to think twice before going back. I'm assuming it was just a bad night..? I love the space and the music.
I have never been overly impressed with Hecho, but this will probably be the last time I go there. Their menu is bizarre with no standout dishes. The service has always been spotty. I was especially irked this time when I arrived for my reservation with friends and was given a table close to the door. Half the place was empty and all the booths were empty. I immediately asked if I could have a booth since they were all empty. Though we were given one, the person seating us felt compelled to inform me that they were not empty, they had reservations. One, I found that odd since I had a reservation too and was there first. Two, why isn't the customer right and keep your mouth shut. This hasn't been the first time I have had to deal with bitchiness from the staff seating patrons. Apparently good staff is hard to come by. As for the menu, they use to have a good cheese and chorizo chip dip as a starter, but that was eliminated. Who knows why! Now they list single tacos as starters. Who starts with that? And shouldn't starters be for sharing? How do you share a small taco? Pass it around for each person to take a bite? Very odd and boring menu in general. I would recommend a menu overhaul and staff training if they want to survive.
Very loud if you dine next to the bar. And guacamole could have been mashed more otherwise great restaurant.
It's no Comal
Hecho is a local favorite in the Castro. Their pinche picante margarita is hands down one of my favorites in the city! Guacamole is also a favorite. On this particular occasion, service was slower than usual. Not sure why, as they didn't seem particularly busy. All in all, great spot.
This place was great. The food was authentic, fresh and super yummy. The guacamole was to die for!
For only having 4 tables full, service was a little slow. Food was ok this time but much better previously.
