I've had Sunday brunch here several times, and I think the selection has gone down over the years while the price has gone up. The food itself wasn't bad, although I will avoid the hot table in the future: everything had been sitting too long and was lukewarm. The desserts are amazing, and the seafood was different and tasty. Service wasn't as attentive as it could have been despite it being very quiet.
We enjoyed a great meal and the service was excellent.
We were at Elmhirst to celebrate two birthdays. The dining room was beautiful, decorated for Xmas, and a roaring fire in the hearth. The server was attentive, friendly, and well-trained at her job which makes the dining experience more pleasurable. Three of us thoroughly enjoyed our appetizers, meals and desserts, and the amuse bouche and the palate cleanser were pleasant surprises. We were also pleased by the dessert assortment that arrived with candles without even ordering it for the birthday girls. Overall a delightful experience- the only drawbacks were the rather loud large Xmas party gathering in the adjoining room with their own live music. It wasn't possible to dampen the sound so the only option was to turn off the softer music in our space and listen to the loud Xmas carols from the other space (in November).
Excellent food and service. The only down point was how this "date night" was marketed to me through OpenTable. This date night was supposed to be a special price/offer. However, after arriving at our table the waiter stated that there was no special offer and we would have to order off of the menu at the regular price. We would not have booked this restaurant had we known that it wasn't a special price.
We shared the lobster gnocci appetizer and had the duck and the lamb entrees. The duck and lobster were fantastic, while the lamb special was a little bit busy. All in all, the food was excellent. Andrew was an expert server and host.
There are few settings as beautiful as the grounds and the Elmhirst Inn. The fod however was very disappointing. The vegetables were under-cooked and quite tasteless, and such a shame given the bounty in Nothumberland Hills. I was quite disappointed given the price of the meal. A new approach by the Chef would be welcomd.
Was a lovely evening to celebrate ny friends and my birthday's, was really special
Nicely prepared small portions. Very nice presentation. Good service. Overall, very nice and definitely recommended.
It was okay over all and price 35 each for brunch was reasonable.
Amy the hostess was kind a rude for saying we arrived 5mins earlier than suppose to be 6pm. Not expecting to hear that as a welcome on our first visit reservation on Mothers day. Not impress at all for a welcome greetings.
Very nice restaurant. We went for a dinner, warm welcomed, very quiet, sweet music.
Loved the extra special Birthday cake (for 3). Amazing food!
We had a very nice evening out with friends to celebrate Valentine's Day, in spite of the food being very mediocre. All 4 of us had the beef Wellington for the main course...the beef was not very tender, and the pastry very mushy. Also, the presentation was a poor attempt to fancy the plate up. The service however was excellent.
We should add that we have been to Elmhirst several times before, for Sunday Brunch, and the food has always been excellent, so we assume this experience was a blip, and we will come back.
Sadly this was the worst meal we have ever had in a restaurant. It was our 20th anniversary and we had been looking forward to the meal and it was so bad neither of us could eat it despite being hungry. It was so disappointing. Your location is so lovely, but the food was gross, completely un-edible. Sauce like wall paper paste, watery fish, bland veggies, under cooked potatoes with no flavour. Your server tried to make it up to us but ther was nothing she could do. the food left us green and we were there for dinner.
Big Thumbs UP for Natasha, our waitress. She was wonderful, gave us 110% service.
Great Thanksgiving meal. Only issue is that we tried to add 2 people to our reservation of 2 that afternoon. Told us they could not accommodate but we asked them to call us if they received a last minute cancellation. No call but we had open seating for 14 surrounding us the whole time we are. Disappointed
Beautiful lake view, food was ok, not great for elegant restaurant
We had been to Elmhurst many times in the past. Always enjoyed the experience and felt it was something to reserve for special occasions. My parents had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary 15 yrs ago renting several cottages for my 5 siblings and myself and all our children. It was such a wonderful weekend we wanted to replicate the experience.
Unfortunately, Friday when we arrived at the time we had reserved, the table was not ready but we sat down anyway. There were at least a dozen flies swarming the food, the window and of course ourselves. This was really distracting and annoying, let alone unhygienic!
So although the waitress was apologetic and it is in a farming area, it really was not pleasant.
The food was fine. The dessert served on a tray noting the 65th wedding anniversary and 90th birthday that we were celebrating, was really thoughtful and special for my parents.
They both said however, that they would never go back, so that saddened me. We live in Ottawa and Guelph and the Toronto area so likely will not go back again either.
Was there for my mothers 80th, with 9 family and friends. There was a wddding on at the same time and while they were in another room it was still loud. To start the water on the table was salty because their water system had been worked on that day. There was only one other table (of 2) in the restaurant and yet they only had enough of the "special" for 2 orders. The "cesar salad" was definitely not a cesar, it had an oil dressing not a cream based one. The rest of the food order was average. When we ordered coffee it came with cream that was curdled. All in all quite disappointing.
We have been to the Sunday brunch and enjoyed our visit each time but the Monday brunch is quite different.
We had very poor seating with bench seating that was stained and the bench was deep requiring us to sit forward to reach our plates..
They ran out of food quickly and what was offered looked like a dogs dinner. The dessert table was messy and meager and not refreshed.
I would never go on a Monday again.
Celebrated a birthday. The food was excellent. Kenn our server was excellent. All round great experience.
Hockey kids club should have been told to keep it down as they made what was to be a quiet dinner a very noisy dinner so much so that i would not recommend it to anyone. This is the second time this has happened to me. Last time I took two out of town guests for brunch and we were seated on the right side at a table for 6 or 8. Banquet style not the atmosphere i was looking for at all. This recent dinner was the first time i had decided to give it another try. I love the location but the atmosphere is distroyed by young kinds running around and banquet style seating for 3 people.
Don't believe your GPS all the time
Hearthside Dining at Elmhirst Resort is a beautiful cottage resort snuggled on the shore of Rice Lake just off Settlers Line. Unfortunately our GPS suggested we take Settlers Line all the way from highway 7 rather than taking county road 2 from Keene to Settlers Line. The first 7 kilometres of Settlers Line(which is un paved road) from highway 7 is like riding a roller coaster at the best of times without having to deal with a light snow cover as we did on New Years Day 2016. You know when you apply your brakes at the top of the hill and you car slides to the bottom it is not a good sign.
Even though treacherous it was worth the trip. The service was good and the food superb. No special New Years menu and although lunch menu was somewhat limited it was very tasty. We chose French onion and potato and leek soup as starters and a chicken salad and Thai Beef stir fry as entrees. All items very tasty and portions more than ample. The chocolate brownie with sauce and creme for dessert was to die for. The $7 per glass ice wine was a good finishing touch.
It's worth the trip to the lake but just remember go through Keene and do not let your GPS lead you astray.
We had heard about the great brunch served at Elmhirst and a group of friends decided what a great way to get together and take a deep breath after the holidays. We came from Whitby - it was about an hour and 10 minute drive - very relaxing and picturesque arriving at the resort for the 1:00 seating. The ambiance was great - beautiful views - rustic and quaint.
The food was amazing - value amazing - from breakfast to seafood to roast beef, ribs, turkey and duck - salads - desserts galore - appetizers - they had it all!!! We will be back again and would highly recommend visiting the Elmhirst Resort - it is worth the drive to Keene!
Keep up the great work!!!
We have always had a home cooked Christmas dinner and we were somewhat skeptical about how we would enjoy dining out on this occasion. We couldn't have been more wrong, it was wonderful. The food was excellent and the service even better. What friendly and attentive staff! We would definitely recommend this to friends and family. We will definitely be back!

We loved the variety of foods. This is our second visit in recent weeks and on both occasions we found that the hot buffet foods were not hot, particularly the vegetables, once we got to our tables. Great variety of delicious desserts. Pleasant background piano. Attentive table servers.
Beautiful location looking over Rice Lake. Recommend reserving a window seat. Service was prompt and friendly, but Sunday afternoon meals are strictly buffet, so good service is not as important as dinner would be. The food is fine. There is a wide variety of buffet items, and for people who think that quality and volume are synonymous - and there were plenty of people In the dining room who apparently do - this is the place to go for brunch. There was nothing wrong with any of the food offerings, and I realize that standards for buffets have to be adjusted down, it was just OK. If it had been just a little better, my overall rating would have been 4 stars because it really is a lovely setting for a meal.
The food quality was good but as far as the hot dishes were concerned we thought it was all cool to luke warm at best. I know this is a brunch buffet but your potatoes & gravy were cool. The desserts were great. The views were beautiful.
Staff were friendly and courteous, but our waiter could have been a little more attentive as he did ask for our drinks at first & later came back to ask about the food, which we had just started the meal and he never returned to ask us to refill for water or coffee. There was a young girl who did not stop serving and cleaning up the entire time we were there, and she should be commended. I still gave a good tip considering because I know how hard most of your staff work.
The pianist is a nice touch but it was loud and hard to talk over and I think he should not be placed so prominently in the eating area when people are trying to talk over him. He would be great asset at a lounge area although he should be using the soft pedal and not the loud pedal.
These are just my suggestions since you asked for comments but overall a really nice resort and I would definitely come back for a dinner provided it is served hot.
Friends from Kleinburg were totally delighted with the view of the lake and then the fantastic meal. We had an early dinner and they were surprised that the dining room wasn't packed with people! The servers were great and I even got a really useful tip on using my camera! Always love Elmhurst - great memories from the past and in the making!
Just felt the level of service was not as usual. Not asked about drinks even coffee and tea. Water was lukewarm with no ice. Understand it was busier but it was a buffet.
Disappointed in the food and the general ambiance or the lack of, also the dinning room was noisy. The air handling unit was very noisy made it difficult to talk. I have dined here before and remembered the food to of better quality than we had that night. In closing my wife of 30 years suggested that if I want many more years we will be dining somewhere else for our anniversary. Please note our server and the view on a rainy evening was great.
Our family has enjoyed special occasions for brunch at Elmhirsts for years. Over the past few years the resort has been going downhill. The gardens have looked poorly cared for over the past couple of years and the buildings are looking tired. We took my Mom to Elmhirsts for Mothers Day brunch last weekend and the food quality was poor. This is not normal for Elmhirsts. It was one of the worst buffets we have experienced in decades.
We felt very "looked after". As soon as we were finished what was on our plates, they were taken away. No noisy busy, just quiet movement. The only complaint about the food was the crepe. I was unattractively served, and was very watery. Most unpleasant. The person making the crepes stated "I hate making crepes! I probably would not choose a crepe again, even though the fresh fruit looked wonderful. Perhaps some more instructions were needed? Otherwise everything was wonderful. The omelette was particularly good. I liked the the fact that the items were noted on a white board, and were easily identified. Very important for food allergy's. I was glad the desserts were cut in little pieces. That way we were able to sample our favourites.
The wait staff were all very pleasant, and most helpful. We will definitely come back again.
Great Valentine's Day menu - we had rack of lamb & beef tenderloin . Service was extra special , and seemed very genuine. Most of the food (Beef, lamb, chickenpork etc ) was local, even farmed, on site. Price very reasonable for the occasion..
Thoroughly enjoyed another special occasion meal in the quiet Hearthside Dining Room.
Great food. Ashley, our server was a delight. The vegetable soup was so good and the Tenderloin was fantastic. My wife had the stuffed chicken, was very tasty but lacked the Brie that was advertised.
Thank you for a wonderful evening! The food was sumptuous. We were treated like royalty on our anniversary. I took pictures of all the food because everything looked to professional and attractive. Our waitress was very friendly, polite, and helpful! The chef and sous-chef came out to meet us. (We took their photo as well!) What a wonderful experience! Thank you!
Our first brunch at Elmhirst and we were pleasantly satisfied. The food was excellent with a variety to suit all tastes, service fantastic and the price reasonable. And we had a great view of Rice Lake. We'd recoomend this to everyone.
We have been going to the brunch for a few years, every time we going it keeps getting worse, not enough people to work the station , no one filled empty food trays. For the cost of the brunch and the value you get now it is not worth it. We won't be back.
Not a very good brunch for the price. At $25pp for a brunch buffet, it was mediocre at best. A mishmash of items, the waffle iron wasn't working, extremely slow service, I could go on. It was just OK. Was not worth the price.
