What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.9

Hearth has been one of the East Village’s best restaurants for over a decade, and it just got a whole lot lighter and leaner.

Ratings 7.5-8.0:These are restaurants that are reliable, tasty, and particularly good for whatever we have deemed them “Perfect For.” Hit up a 7.7 for Date Night with confidence, as long as you don’t need the restaurant to be the most interesting thing that happens that night.

Everything we had was delicious - mushrooms, pate, anchovies, and carrots, served in tapas sizes which we shared. Noise level was not too bad, you could have a conversation. This was my second visit (we went on both a Saturday and a Monday night ) and I look forward to my third.

Second time there with same group of friends, one year apart. One vegetarian in the group, and all enjoyed the delicious brunch offerings and cocktails.

Absolutely amazing restaurant. We always end up taking our visitors here for a meal - it's our go-to whenever we want something elevated, healthy and delicious.

Simply stunning, as always! Kevin and Laura are amazing and the tasting menu is always recommended. If you're interested in serious food and great wine, rather than just the latest fad, it just doesn't get any better.

Fun vibe and friendly, professional service, but food was hit or miss. Good: meatballs, chocolate dessert. Ok: calamari, mixed meat burger, broth, bream. Not good: gnocchi. Overall, disappointing.

Had the chance to sit at the Chef's Counter. Great experience ! It's really nice to see the kitchen staff working under a lot of pressure. They are a very effective bunch that served good food and deliver outstanding service.

Truly a wonderful surprise to happen upon this place. Everything was excellent. Great menu well realized. Great service. Wine selections could have been more exciting and the noise levels were high -- the only hitch.

Fresh, healthy ingredients prepared deliciously. Nothing run of the mill but completely accessible and wonderful. Every dish was terrific. And I think we tried them all!

Delicious food, nice casual atmosphere and great service. A bit overpriced, $25 for 3 meatballs is kinda ridic, thankfully they were excellent. I would go back- but not everyday dining due to the prices.

Good ambience, very high quality food and nice wine.

Unfortunately a confusing menu, very aloof service and very expensive. Several other people were encountering the same on adjacent tables.

No-one even acknowledged us as we left.

Felt like we should be grateful for being allowed to eat there!

We love this place. Such fresh food and complex but not fussy flavors. The hake was excellent, and the mushrooms are the best we've ever had. We have been coming to Hearth for nearly a decade and it is consistently excellent. That is hard to maintain over such a long time. Bravo and keep it up!

Menu and restaurant decor are both well curated. I've never seen a dark chocolate board for dessert. We had a reservation booked and arrived early to see if they could accommodate a bit earlier as our timing was going to be tight with a show we were seeing after. They were able to accommodate us with a smile on their faces. I went here a couple years ago and thought it was a good, but not spectacular. I left this past Saturday thinking it was spectacular, and I definitely want to come back soon. Things that were great were the meatballs, radishes, bread, Hearth broth, polenta.

Absolutely, positively, outstanding! The broth was amazing; the short ribs...mmmmm! My favorite— a combination of the gnocchi and the wild mushrooms suggested by Jefferson! So good!!!

I ordered the short rib dish. It was ... repulsive. Inedible. My wife ordered the cod and it was utterly unremarkable. The polenta had large chunks of ... I don't know what and it also had large pieces of black pepper. The waitress kindly didn't bill me for the short rib but still ... the dinner was awful.

The atmosphere was great! The food, though, wasn’t as good as I expected. We liked the garlic bread!! But my friend’s gemelli pasta dish was not hot and not as flavorful (maybe because it wasn’t hot). My macaroni (sp?) with pork ragu and ricotta tasted good, but it wasn’t anything special considering the price and atmosphere. For dessert, we really liked the donuts. But the S’more’s bites were burned on the bottom, ruining the overall taste. As such, our food experience did not match the price, atmosphere and promotion of the place. If you get the food right, Hearth will be an excellent experience overall!

Hearth has the perfect atmosphere for being mildly hungover and wanting to enjoy a bright quiet Sunday afternoon brunch with Bloody Mary's, black coffee, and a breakfast bowl with healthy grains and kale. 10/10 would be hungover and go here again.

Brought another out-of-town friend to introduce them to Hearth and enjoy a terrific meal. Plates are somewhere between 'small' and full sized, so that selecting two gives you the equivalent of an appetizer and an entree.

The wine list is also memorable, and offers several in the under-$70 price range.

Fantastic Meal. Flawless service. It was way too cold in there though. It was 72 degrees out on a winter day and they must have turned the AC on. I run hot and I was super chilly. Had to wear my coat

Our server was not good. He asked us what we wanted to drink almost right after we were seated, then asked again a few minutes later and then didn't return for 10-15mins. Their wine list is a booklet so not sure why he kept asking. When were we done I asked for the check but he brought us the dessert menu instead. We did end up getting dessert after we asked another server because he had disappeared again. I ordered a dessert wine and he brought me the wrong one and on top of that charged a higher price for the one I ordered. But even the higher charge did not correlate with any of the other dessert wines on the list so not sure what that was about. He was unhelpful when we asked questions about the menu or wine and a bit patronizing. The food was good but luckily in NYC one can go to other restaurants with good food and far better service.
