What Insiders Are Saying
Hearth has been one of the East Village’s best restaurants for over a decade, and it just got a whole lot lighter and leaner.
Everything about Hearth was outstanding. I’m still thinking about it days later! The wait staff was kind, attentive, and helpful. Ambiance was exactly what we were looking for - classy but no upturned noses. Lastly, every dish was absolutely delicious and surprising. I can’t wait to come back!
We went for the tasting and it was absolutely amazing.
Hearth joins the list of amazing gems in NYC for me. Our server was extremely pleasant and so knowledgable about everything on every menu. The food was outstanding, we has the braised lamb for two which was so good I think I may have gotten a little teary eyed from its awesomeness. The lamb was like butter and the cacio e pepe polenta was also outstanding. Timing was perfect for our courses. Cant say enough good about this place, cant wait to try some more of their menu!
Briefly: the service was excellent- not patronizing, solicitous about the noise level, no pressure to hurry up and get out, professional team. The greens were tasty, the meatballs delicious though a little salty, the gnocchi surprisingly tender and subtle. It felt like a kind of tapas bar, which is fine, though tiny portions meant I ended up getting a dessert (good but not great), something I normally don't do. We had a very expensive and undistinguished bottle of wine, Rosso 2006 do not remember the name- the biggest disappointment of the night. Felt like a place that was serious about delicate, fresh, interesting food. Would love to go there at lunch as I suspect it would be quieter and less clamorous.
Hearth lived up to the reviews I had perused prior to traveling to NYC. I gathered some adventurous dining friends and we had a wonderful set of 10 plates to share. The mushrooms which were sautéed in some yummy oil to crispyness helped change my perception of mushrooms overall (as squishy and rubbery). I also was also pleasantly surprised that I was able to align most of the meal with a recent lectin-free focus of mine. Looking forward to going back next time I'm in the Big Apple.
Really excellent food and service and the dishes were perfect for sharing. I highly recommend.
Excellent and focused menu, attentive service. High quality ingredients and preparation, with savory qualities. Rightly proportioned. Somewhat expensive but not out of line for the type of food and neighborhood, and in case the food quality supports the price point. Smart crowd and understated yet modern decor.
It was a little loud, but I he food and service were great!!
I was a little disappointed in a few things. You have to buy bread for $7, which was strange. The bread was OK, but nothing to write home about. The fusilli pasta was advertised as having spring vegetables, but they were only peas, some small bits of asparagus, and canned artichokes. Not great, particularly for the money. We didn't have desert, and the server was nice and friendly. The atmosphere was very nice. I might go back and try again.
A little off with the timing of the service. Our party of 4 (the 5th person was ill) arrived on time for our 7:00 dinner May 1st, but took 35 minutes before wait staff took our order, with a polite excuse that there was a big party going on.
I had called in advance to provide information about my 2 bottles of wines (a white and a red) that I will byo, corkage charged at $40 per bottle, and when I presented bottles to the wait staff, to my surprise he quickly took off with them saying they need to be opened at at he back. I was quite confused as to why he couldn't have opened the bottles in our vicinity. About 15 minutes later, he came back with the bottles, both uncorked, one of them apparently poured into a decanter. I mentioned to the lady who was helping serve that I wished the waiter who took bottle had asked me first if I wanted any of my bottles to be decanted beforehand.
Great food arrived at good pacing, and the gnocchi, mushrooms, lamb cutlet, meat balls and desserts were their usual terrific deliciousness that everybody enjoyed.
Great food. Fun atmosphere. Service was painful at times.
Outstanding all around!! Loved it- food, service & ambiance!
I always enjoy visits to Hearth, especially for sharing with friends. I find the food delicious, fresh and creative. Servers are gracoous, knowledgeable and go out of their way to find out answers also, or reccommend a bottle wine for a particular meal. I get a chance to try a new wine from your vast list. Tables are spaced well, not crowded in, so I can see friends, relax and hear our conversations. The vibe is upbeat and friendly, yet serious about good flavor. There’s a happy hum in the restaurant, you feel it when you walk in, that makes me smile.
It was our first time eating at Hearth and I had made a reservation for 6 people on a Thursday night. We were ushered to a table in the back of restaurant next to the kitchen which was loud, smoky and brightly lit. Right away we were not happy as the front of restaurant was dimly lit and ambiance much softer. Service was good but the only fish on menu was already sold out. And with limited menu, that was a little upsetting. We shared apps, gnocchi, meatballs and chicken which was all fine. Overall, I was not impressed enough to return and frankly had to apologize to my guests for my choice of restaurants.. My Advice to manager would be to let your customers know if you’re really busy and back room is only option as I would have gone elsewhere had I known where we would have been seated.
Always love going to hearth when in town.
Great experience and ambiance. Chef and wait staff were very accommodating with dietary restrictions. Food was healthy, delicious and flavorful.
Fantastic.. read up on this wonderful, thoughtful restaurant before you visit and you’ll be even more impressed :)
Excellent comfort food
The prices are supposed to indicate whether it the dish is appetizer or entree sized but the portions are pathetic. Two scallops for $25? We ordered three appetizer sized and three entree sized for two adults and two teens and we ended up having to order two more entree sized and we were still hungry at the end. Particularly for the pastas and vegetables they should be a little more generous. Excellent location, fun setting, the food overall is very good and service is outstanding but you leave feeling gauged.
This is my favorite restaurant in NYC. That’s why it pains me to give it anything other than 5 stars. I think their Monday kitchen staff isn’t their best. We ordered the fish for 2 (pricey) and it was mostly raw. Luckily the chef came and put back in the oven but then it was sort of over cooked. Definitely not worth the price they charged for the fish. Only a free s’mores was given as a discount. Love you Hearth, prove me wrong at my next anniversary
Top notch! Excellent food, great wine list (with some rather unorthodox wines) and superb service. The ambiance varies a bit by where you end up getting seated, but we got very lucky this time.
Hearth is a beautiful, homey restaurant. The wait staff were efficient, but the sommelier above my expectations. So kind and approachable, but also so knowledgeable. The food was very good, but pricey for portion sizes. Sadly one of our veg dishes had a piece of plastic in it. The waitress wasn’t too concerned about it. The gnocchi, skate wing, spigarello and beef tartar were my favourites.
Our party of 6 had a great dinner. We ordered many of the items on the menu and shared everything. We especially liked the liver pate, meat balls, duck, vegetables, and pasta dishes. And, can't forget, the garlic bread. Wonderful selection of wine. The service was friendly and more than competent. Ambiance was fun and exciting. Thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Hearth is one of the finest restaurants in NYC. The food design and flavors are fantastic with exceptional quality. I may have had the finest hamburger i have ever had. The spigarello was great and don't miss the freshly baked breads. We had the fusilli and maccherroni - both were exceptional. They have a very thoughtful wine list to go along with the great food.
Our son came for a visit and the family went out Hearth for Brunch. The meal was delicious. We each ordered different items: Frittata, Scrambled eggs and muffin and poached eggs and bacon. We left well fed and happy.
When I want a great meal that still feels comforting yet unique and special, this is where I head. The entire experience is worth the price, and you can even ask to be seated at the pass, where you can gaze at the kitchen and watch the magic firsthand.
Food was delicious and server was great as well. Recommend the mushrooms, chicken, anchovies and meat balls.
I was in New York on business and wanted to treat myself. I’ve always liked open kitchens and read about Hearth. I was not disappointed. The staff was very friendly from the bartender to the host (Hey Minnesota) to the wait staff and chef. I opted for the tasting menu and each course was a treat. The gnocchi was amazing. I would definitely come back.
I have always had consistently wonderful meals at Hearth. Their wine list is out of this world - even the by the glass options are unique (hard to turn down the ‘83 Riesling, but the Orange wine was absurdly amazing). And the service is always warm and knowledgeable. Such a treat to dine here.
Fabulous restaurant in every which way -- food menu and quality, restaurant ambiance, staff, etc. Would absolutely go back!
We were celebrating a double birthday as a family, meaning we had little ones, vegetarians and a big table. Our server was incredible and accommodating, he made sure the little ones food came first (special order of pasta with butter) and the chef included extra vegetarian options in our tasting menu. Food was excellent! The beef tartare was outstanding. The gnocchi incredible and the polenta was delicious. We enjoyed every moment.
Food came out very quickly - whole dinner only took 1.5 hours, surprising
Amazing food and wait service other than hostess
Tasty food but VERY TINY portions with high prices. I was still hungry after I left and had soup, bread, shared two entrees with my husband and dessert.
Hearth was amazing! Can all restaurants serve this quality food please?!
It's just the best place. One of the very few places I come to again and again. The food is fantastic and service equally great. Love it!
Our waitress Laura was so sweet and the food was outstanding. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to everyone!
What a gem of a restaurant! The food was delicious, lovely ambiance, and our waitress was outstanding. Highly recommend! Definitely try the polenta and the chick pea soup.
Really a great menu and the service was fantastic. Love the atmosphere, too.
My experience was quite negatively colored by the fact that Hearth took a 3:15 pm reservation but the kitchen closes at 3:30 pm. If you are going to close the kitchen at 3:30 pm, you should stop taking reservations at 3 pm at the very latest. The food was fine but the service was rushed and brusque.
