About Hayes Street Grill

Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

The food was good and we enjoyed the experience. We had lunch before going to the ballet. It took too long to get our check even though we told the wait staff we needed to get out in time to get to the Opera House.

Service was excellent. Good food very tasty. Very close to War Memorial Building and easy walk to and from. If you go try the cracked crab it was absolutely delicious. Will return when in the area.

Best fish restaurant in town--mesquite grill, done to a turn, excellent quality, fine side dishes, fries like Mother used to make! Of course, you pay a premium price for all this, but it's worth it!

My holiday season began the other night with a dinner with friends at the Hayes Street Grill. It was the perfect start! Perfect classic cocktails, the freshest seafood starters and mains and a thoughtfully varied wine list will keep me coming back over and over. The wonderful food, gracious service and cozy ambience were all that a discerning diner could ask for. A great place for dinner before a concert at the SF Jazz Center or an evening at the Nourse.

Everything at Hayes Street Grill depends on the time...in the 90 minutes leading up to the rising curtain at the symphony, opera, or ballet, it's a mad rush to get everyone fed and out the door, since none of those venues will seat you after the performance begins. Attempting a reservation for 6 pm is doomed to failure, and at 8:15 the place is a quiet as a mouse's funeral.

We've eaten here at least twice before, and this was by far our least enjoyable time. The servers seemed to have forgotten that we had no theater planned for after dinner, and we were in, seated, served, and out in under an hour. The presentation of our fish dinners seemed uninspired and bland. My companion had to send the Opah back for more time on the grill, and it needed two varieties of sauce to make it have any taste worth remembering.

Bottom line, I think we're done here. We will, however, return to the Alamo Square Seafood Grill, where the ambience is warmer, the food more carefully prepared and presented, and the prices a fraction of Hayes Street.

Sadly, this was a disappointing experience for the price of the meal ($160+ for 2 people) and we were ready for a fun festive pre-symphony girls dinner. The food was good, but not for $28-$32 per entree. Service slow overall. We ordered Grey Goose martinis which came on the first round and were tasty. My friend ordered another one and the second one was NOT Grey Goose (someone thought we might not notice). When we said something to the waiter, twice, he was fairly rude, grabbed the drink from my friend in a huff. Eventually, she got a new one (and it truly was different, and the right, vodka). What was fascinating is that he dropped us like a hot potato for the rest of the evening and someone else wound up taking care of us for more cocktails, desert, etc. So odd and impolite. (Server #0002, by the way).

As usual , I enjoyed lunch at HSG--entre, srrvice, & lovely Meyer lemon tart. However, one of my party was not at all pleased. She said her salmon contained tiny bones and had an unpleasant taste, and that the sauce on the sundae she had for dessert had a hard texture.
So, the ratings above are lower than I would have given.

I’ve been to Hayes Street Grill a dozen times — it is one of my “go to” spots for business lunches. The fish is always great, fresh, simply and well prepared. If you like seafood—not crazy Red Lobster giant fried shrimp seafood—but quality fish served in a sophisticated, but not stuffy manner, check this place out.

The opah was delicious however, a rather small portion for the exorbitant pricetag and paired with nothing more than a few french fries!

I recently had a similar meal at another very well known sf restaurant that came with 2 equal accompaniments included in the price, a luxury setting & a view of the golden gate bridge!

Still a gem! We had not dined at the Hayes Street Grill in quite a few years. We took our 93 year old friend to a concert at Davies and wanted a close by restaurant. The food was very good and the service exceptional. We had the crab cakes made from a crab imported from Maine and Eastern Canada; the crab cakes were sweet, almost no filler and succulent. The rex sole tasted as if it was caught just before being put on my plate. And the paella was great - piled high with fresh seafood. We bought our wine and paid the corkage. We shared two desserts - the chocolate flourless cake and a seasonal persimmon spiced cake. Both were excellent. And finally, Hayes Street still makes some of the best french fries around. A wonderful evening. The restaurant is high on our list again.

We had a 6:30 reservation and were stuck in bad traffic, so I called the restaurant and they said they’d save our table for us. Finally got there at 7:00 pm, got our table and we had tickets to the symphony at 8:00. Staff was awesome- they said they would take care of us and we’d get to our show. And they did- we ordered, food and drinks arrived quickly. Very good food and great service. The staff couldn’t have been nicer. Had a lovely night thanks to the Hayes Street Grill!

From start to finish it was a wonderful experience. We came to celebrate my birthday prior to the SF Symphony with Seal. Restaurant Location was right around corner to Davies Hall where the concert was. The waiter made sure that we were finished in time for our show. We relaxed, ordered martinis and visited. Then the food arrived. We didn't feel rushed at all-so nice. The food was so tasty and fresh. I had the grilled Opah (white fish). You can pick the sauces which comes on the side. I had the lemon caper sauce and it was FAB! I also had the homemade split pea soup with ham hocks...All delish! Mom had the crab cakes with fries..... oh the fries! Gooooooood!!! This place feels like a local hangout were everyone treats you like family. Not over the top fancy but more feeling SF nostalgic. We met a group of locals sitting next to us who were such nice folks. What a pleasure for the taste buds and happy time all the way around! PS...the concert was FeNom!!!!! Thx - we'll be back!

A fave since the 80s. Pleasant service, good drinks, and wonderful simple local seafood. Iconic dancers and musicians on the walls. Great pre ballet, symphony or opera venue. Supper 11/28: th best crab cake I ever ate, with beurre blanc , frisée, and hot crisp golden fries. Expensive for such a low-key place but always worth it!

Great selection of fresh fish, with your choice of sauce. I had Opah, my husband had Petrale Sole; both were generous portions and cooked to perfection. Very crowded in pre-theater time, but the service was expert and really quick.

Well located to all performing arts venues and a prized classic by the 55+age group, we ate well enough but did not think our dinner was consistent with the prices on the menu. Service was perfunctory but prompt given our plans for the evening. The petrale sole was overwhelmed with a heavy chanterelle sauce...2 little pieces for $30...no! The paella was just good and also small. We found the caeser salad acidic although reasonably sized. Insipid croutons. The green salad at two other tables seemed better. Decent cocktails. Not a repeat for us.
