A reliable and friendly standby with excellent service and good quality ingredients. Once it was adventurous and surprising, but its menu really hasn't changed much since the 80s. It has good memories for me personally, and is very convenient for all the performing arts venues nearby.
Hayes Street Grill is our favorite restaurant near the Opera and Symphony. it's always great food, quick and friendly service and convenient!! our favorite seafood restaurant in SF!!
You can always count on premium fish options at Hayes St Grill and super experienced wait staff.
Aside from the noise level the experience was primarily positive. Our waiter was fun but very rushed. He's been there for 31 years so really knows what he's doing. I sent my first glass of wine back (too sweet) - no problem. Both my friend's dish and mine were superb. Don't bother with the side dish of greens. - boring. Oh and everybody in the restaurant was OLD!! But I'm old so it didn't bother me TOO much.
Hayes Street Grill is pretty much our favorite restaurant in the city. That's partly because the first time we didn't have a reservation, they looked dead full, and we had to get to a concert but the elegant host found us a little table for two by the kitchen. There isn't much point to eating here one doesn't like seafood, but the fish is always excellent, whether the main dishes or the selection of grilled fish. Waiters are friendly but very professional. Always bustling. Great mix of ages, and the average dress code is well above average though pretty casual doesn't look out of place. There is a lot to be said for a good traditional restaurant and this is a great example.
Our lunch before the symphony was superb, as usual.
Convenient pre-theater dining experience; ambiance somewhat stodgy but nicely prepared dishes. A bit pricey.
Always a favorite!
Classic, long time seafood restaurant. A bit disappointed in the food, but the service was excellent. Just didn't have the kind of charm I'd thought it would as such a venerable institution on Hayes Street.
I gave a score of 4 instead of 5 stars for service because the host who seated us was unfriendly, unwelcoming. Is it to much to ask of a person to smile and say welcome?
Our waiter, on the other hand, was FABULOUS!
