About Hayes Street Grill

Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

Crowded, staff overwhelmed with post opera rush, soup tasty, rex sole fair at best.

Well located to all performing arts venues and a prized classic by the 55+age group, we ate well enough but did not think our dinner was consistent with the prices on the menu. Service was perfunctory but prompt given our plans for the evening. The petrale sole was overwhelmed with a heavy chanterelle sauce...2 little pieces for $30...no! The paella was just good and also small. We found the caeser salad acidic although reasonably sized. Insipid croutons. The green salad at two other tables seemed better. Decent cocktails. Not a repeat for us.

Great, as always. best seafood in town, great wait staff and, Fred, of course!, adequate wine list (unless you're a wine snob), reasonably priced.

We both had salads for lunch and the ingredients were really fresh. Our wait person even asked it I wanted extra dressing for the take-home left overs.

Why do we choose Hayes Street so often? Because we can always be certain we'll get good , fresh food and excellent service. Love the many fish choices...and the desserts when we have extra time and room.

The greeter and server were very warm and friendly. They keep the atmosphere upbeat. The food is delicious. This is the perfect place to have lunch before the symphony.

My wife and I have eaten at Hayes Street Grill many times over the years prior to attending performances at the San Francisco Symphony in nearby Davies Symphony Hall. This is the worst experience we have had at this restaurant. My wife and I and two friends all ordered sole with chanterelle mushrooms, which tasted ok. However, the portions of sole were very small - about four bites each. More problematic was the overly long wait time (~ 30 minutes) between our appetizers and our entrees, which was puzzling because the restaurant was not ovrerflowing with customers. We ordered a nice bottle of Grgich Hill Chardonnayl, which arrived with our appetizers and was almost finished by the time our entrees arrived. This experience suggested to me that the restaurant was hoping we would order another bottle of wine to accompany our entrees. A minor annoyance was that no bread was offered to us during the meal. Finally, the maitre dei said nothing to us as we left the restaurant and he was not at all busy. A "thank you" would have been a nice gesture on his part. We will not be returning to Hayes Street Grill any time soon, given the spate of better restaurants in this area.

Host seated us, he never smiled. Saw our waiter only when he took our order and brought wine and our bill. He never smiled. Bus guy cleared efficiently, he never smiled. Dishes were plated like a cafeteria. My buerre blanc was separated. The fries were all end pieces. The creme brulee was ice cold, the top was soggy. No one said thank you, or good bye, or "don't let the door hit you going out." Will I return? Would you?

HAYES STREET GRILL IS ONE OF THE BEST MANAGED AND LONG TERM SUCCESSFUL RESTAURANTS IN THE Bay Area. IT RARELY DISAPPOINTS. OUT OF 6 DINERS, 5 WERE VERY PLEASED WITH THEIR ENTREES. THE RESTAURANT IS METICULOUS ABOUT GETTING DINERS OUT THE DOOR TO THEIR "CURTAINS".

Not like the old days with hipsters doing lines at the tables, a sedate scene with an, er, mature clientele. Perfectly solid for a nice dinner. Menu strong on the seafood end.

Great food and great service. Hayes St. is always reliable. Fresh fish is amazing - had the halibut and it was very good. Scallops are wonderful and calamari appetizer is also excellent. Oh, and the french fries... the french fries are worth the trip.

Great location if you want something close to Davies Symphony Hall or the Opera. Reserve a 5:30 table to be sure you are done for an 8pm performance. Wonderful seafood, good wine selections, elegant desserts. My only minor complaint is that, although I asked, the waiter did not bring us bread.

Seafood is very well prepared and service is attentive, but unobtrusive. Tables are quite close together, so privacy is not possible and noise level depends on who is holding forth at adjacent tables.

I frequently go to HSG. This dinner was even more spectacular. The first time my s.o. had dinner here. she's a vegan. we let the restaurant know about her food preferences before getting to the restaurant. the Chef went above and beyond and made a vegan dinner special for her, that evening. it was wonderful. and we got to meet the chef and thank him personally.

The food and ambiance were perfect for pre-SFS event. The waiter was distracted and not paying attention. Had to ask repeatedly for several basics. Had attitude that he was "bothered". We asked for very little...bread and water.

I went here when it opened as one of the first Hayes Valley/Symphony/Opera restaurants along with Jardinaire. The interior ambiance is dated and crowded and noisy. The servings are particularly small. The food remains good although the chopped salad could have been better presented. Overall, all 6 of us were a bit disappointed and won’t retuen given all the other options. An older generation (>70) may still enjoy the stodgy interior?!?

Always a great choice for Civic Center. Love the extensive seafood selection - and everything else on the menu. (No matter what else I order, I have to include the warm goat cheese salad.) It's good food, super-fresh, prepared perfectly and not over-fussy. Above all, the service at Hayes Street Grill is the best - attentive without hovering, and attention to detail from everyone on the staff. It's just a pleasure to dine here every single time.

Always wonderful service. Best Creme Brulee, french fries, and black coffee in town. Love the sweet butter and sour dough french bread, the Squeeky fresh fish, and wonderful wine list. If you have theatre tickets, they get you out in a heart beat but if your time is relaxed so are they while they manage to stay on top of service. It is no wonder they have been there for forty years and would like to thank the Hayes Street Grill for making our long commute worthwhile.

We hadn't been to Hayes St Grill in a while, and found it to be the same as in the past; good food, served well and promptly, which was important to us, as we had tickets for the symphony afterwards. We weren't disappointed and look forward to another good fish dinner there.
