About Hayes Street Grill

Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

We had a nice evening- not extraordinary. Food was Good, not great. Service was similarly good but not as attentive as I would have liked. The sole was very Good, my companions entrees which were fish with different sauces were just so so. We were there for a relaxed evening with friends on sunday of the mlk weekend, not before an event. We arrived at 7 and would have liked to linger but at 830 - published closing- the wait team disappeared.

Thi8s place has been around a long time so people tend to forget about it, but the food is excellent! Highly recommend it. The staff cold not be nicer as well and Hayes Street has lots of interesting stores and bar. If you go a little later, the crowd that is there for performances clear out and much less crowded.

The combination of tastes were exquisite! Everything from start to finish was delicious. The staff was friendly and enthusiastic about the menu. It was easy to book a table last minute, even on a Saturday evening. Salad through desert; tasty! Authentic; high quality.

I've lived in Hayes Valley since 1980 long before it became known as "HOT" Hayes Valley. I work to SFOpera as a chorus member since 1975 . I've watched the area change and miss many aspects of the gritty, diverse neighborhood. That said, dining at HAYES STREET GRILL was a pleasure. Old-school pleasure. thank you. sincerely , claudia PS I've married twice both times to chef/ restaurant owners . I HATE the term "foodie". HATE it. Presumptuous and off-putting

My wife and I went to this restaurant last Saturday night before a performance at SF Jazz. Although I had read many good reviews, our personal experience was not what I had anticipated.

Pros:
- Very nice ambience (warm lighting, not too noisy, not too crowded)
- All tables have white linens (which is almost a thing of the past for many modern restaurants.)
- The food was very good (salad was fresh, grilled calamari was almost perfect, wine was good, the fish was cooked as expected.)

Cons:
- We did not feel welcome the moment we walked in. (We both are non-caucasian). We got a few unpleasant stares from the patrons on the way to our table.
- The waiter's attitude was somewhat cold and unwelcoming (although not rude).
- All tables around us received very warm welcome and frequent visits from the waiters to see if they were doing ok. None ever stopped by our table.

Overall, the experience was very awkward and unpleasant. We have come to almost every single restaurant around this area whenever we attend a performance at SF Jazz and always have very good experience. This is the first time for us and it somewhat spoiled what could have been an enjoyable Saturday night. I personally cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone. (Of course I can only speak for myself as others seemed to have enjoyed this restaurant.)

Three of us had dinner here prior to a concert. The server was very conscious of getting us out on time. The food and wine was good and priced reasonably compared with similar restaurants. It's very convenient to the opera, ballet and symphony.

We love going to HSBG before SFSymphony concerts because the food is great with many healthy choices, quality control, is excellent, they make us feel welcome, and they get us out on time for the concert. A class act time after time.

Worst experience in years. I should have known better based on Open Table and Yelp reviews. They are kind giving threes. This at best is a 2. The best was the shrimp appetizer but the vegetable was over cooked as well as the scallops and black cod. The waiter said the servings were big. Maybe he Thought I was from Ethiopia

The food quality is good. The presentation is no-frills (think Tuna steak and basket of fries, no garnish.) At the end of the day, the food you're getting doesn't justify the price tag. Also, the atmosphere is nice but there's nothing special about it; paper covers over linen tablecloth type place.

Hayes Street Grill is a beloved institution. The service is great and I appreciate that they were able to accommodate our large group for lunch. All of my non-vegan dining companions were very happy with their food. The off-menu veggie plate that the restaurant made for me was fine, but I would have appreciated a more interesting vegan option. In progressive SF, my hope would be that even fish- and meat-centric restaurants would have some inspired vegan and vegetarian options on their menus.

I thought the maitre d and the server were standoffish and cold -- not very welcoming. There was no warmth to them. Other than that, it is a nice restaurant and the food is good.

We went for New Year’s Eve dinner. It was a last minute decision to go so we were surprised to get a table. We weren’t in a rush and had previously seen reviews about slow service so that wasn’t an issue. Overall the food was good but service wasn’t so good. They didn’t get the order for appetizer brought that after the meal and forgot to place the side order. Not impressed with the service but food was good.

I live in Half Moon Bay so I'm sorry this can't be one of my "neighborhood haunts." The food was wonderful and the service attentive. We were there on New Year's Eve, and it was indeed quite crowded. Yet the service remained top-notch. I opened with a "simple" romaine salad with buttermilk dressing and blue cheese. Very tasty. My scallops were cooked evenly and lightly through (a bit different than the common seared on the outside and almost raw on the inside). Quite enjoyable, served on spinach and a potato/cauliflower puree. The lemon mousse was a delightful cloud, and a nice way to finish a meal. I'll be back.

We had dinner here before a concert at Davies. The place was completely packed, with tables so close together it was almost claustrophobic. The food is great, and our waiter did as good as job as he could considering the high level of energy required. But the acoustics in this over-filled space are terrible, leading to so much noise that it was difficult to hear each other. (We had not trouble hearing the groups on either side of our table-for-two, though.)

My scallops were amazing, but my friend's crab cakes did seem a little mushy. However, that's unusual for this place. I've been there before and have always enjoyed the food. The staff, for the most part, were very professional. We did have a little trouble with our waiter, but everyone else was very helpful and professional.

Nice spot - clearly has been around for a while. Other reviews indicated that service was slow - and it was indeed slow. We were seated by the host quickly, as we were in time for our reservation, however it took about 10 minutes for the waiter to even come by and ask us if we wanted a drink. Water and bread took a while. Once we ordered, the food arrived quickly, however things like getting the check, paying etc. were also very slow. Its good for people that are happy to just hang out for a long time and have a slow easy lunch/dinner, which often times I am. However, I prefer it to be my choice, vs. being forced to because the service is slow.

Menu selection for lunch was limited. Side dish of brussel sprouts was very bland and tasteless. Maybe instead of steaming you should sautee in olive oil or roast in oven. Drinks were plentiful. Bruno, our waiter, was excellent.

I've been coming here for more than a decade. From the service to the ambience to the food, Hayes Street Grill is consistently excellent. Had the simple green salad with shallot sherry dressing, shared the sole and the crab cakes - all of which were amazing, as was the Tanqueray 10. I always feel welcome and valued and I'd go as far as to say this is my favorite restaurant in SF for seafood and ambience. Expensive but worth it.

Still after all these years not a single vegetarian entree...wow. Our vegetarian had to eat brussels sprouts for her entree. (They were delicious, but still) Rice side was dead cold on arrival. Caesar salad was way too heavy on the anchovies. Goat cheese salad was fresh and tasty. Flatiron streak was delicious as were the fries , choc cake and creme brulee. Nothing inventive, but solid traditional stuff.

this is a long time favorite restaurant for any occasion. We lunched with two young children and the entire experience was superb: crayons, paper and wonderful pasta dishes and hot fudge sundae. Staff was pleasant and fun. fish dishes were good with delicious salad accompaniment. The fried oysters were too greasy with fat on the plate but everything else was excellent--salads, fish, hot fudge sundaes.

We had a fabulous visit to Hayes Street Grill the other night, before our show. Our server was prompt in greeting us, and inquired as to if we were going to a show (much appreciated). Service was gracious and timely. Our food was fabulous, as were our drinks. Wonderful evening, and despite being a few mins late to our reservation due to traffic, we made our show. We will return.
