Seafood
Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

Excellent service and food. The pandemic did not adversely affect this restaurant as the food and service remained the same! We cannot say this about other restaurants after the pandemic closures.

Perfect! I don't use that word often. 5- Stars ! In our case the Saturday afternoon was perfect. Outside was noisy and busy on the crowded streets. Inside was quiet to talk. The menu was unique with all fresh items. We decided to share family style. We had fried oysters with a light mixed green salad on the side. Followed by the soft shell crab and Filet of Sole. Everything was served hot with good serving sizes. I had not had the oysters or crab in years so I was thrilled! The service was attentive but not rushing us along. The ambiance was open with high ceilings and bright with memorabilia on the walls. Obviously, our timing was good to avoid the Symphony, Ballet and Opera crowd. We will be back!

Prices were a bit high then before the pandemic. Menu selection seems to be less post-pandemic. Need to expand the menu selections.

Lovely birthday dinner at Hayes Street Grill, one of my favorite San Francisco restaurants. Fish was, as always, excellent, and my husband enjoyed his paella. We never are disappointed here.

Anchovies as an appetizer seemed like fun. White? Spanish? What arrived was an opened tin of what looked like supermarket Star Anchovies, some toast and sliced radishes. I've had this dish before with smoked trout but this presentation to start the meal made us laugh out loud! Our shared salad was good, lots of blue cheese, but when my grilled fish arrived it was almost too small to share. Luckily (or unluckily) the fish was served with French Fries (which I don't normally eat) but at least sharing them let us not go away hungry. Guess I should have ordered rice! I have some wonderful history with this restaurant and will try them again...

Love HTG, Very good service, a bit too loud for us, had 2 loud tables near. The crab cakes inferior, warm goat salad very good, fries not as good as usual, did something change? Sword fish delicious, oysters perfect. Wait for food reasonable.

Dinner was excellent. My fish came out slightly undercooked, but they immediately took it back and cooked it a little more, and it was perfect. Delicious beet salad, and the strawberry pavlova was wonderful. And it was a very convenient 5" walk to the Opera House.

Hayes Street Grill is one of our favorites before performances at Davies and the Opera House. It's convenient, the staff is super-skilled at getting patrons in and out before performances, and the fries are among the best anywhere! The seafood is always wonderful.

Think they are somewhat overpriced. They have a cover charge, which I am used to from extensive travel, but then bread should be included. While very good, feel that the bill should have been about 20% less. also, when i made the reservation, I put down 'birthday', but they didn't acknowledge it all.

My husband and I like to have dinner here before going to the San Francisco Opera, which is a short walk around the corner. Last night we shared the Caesar Salad which was very good though quite salty. We each had the Scallops for our main course. The scallops were fantastic, cooked just right, moist, tasty and fresh-tasting. The corn succotash with it was also delicious, However, the price, $38 for 4 scallops in each serving, is rather outrageous! The service was very efficient, friendly and we hardly had to wait to be served. Though we love the food and the setting and the service and the location, the price for this meal was much too high. Yes, we know...the rent has to be paid; the staff has to be paid; the ingredients need to be purchased....but this was the most we have paid for dinner at this restaurant.

Hayes Street Grill is one of my favorite SF restaurants. Service is excellent and food is even better. Best of all are the martini's, although I think the size of the martini glass has gotten smaller. I can always expect consistency of my experience there, which brings me back.

Grilled swordfish was ok, nothing to write home about. They no longer offer braised greens as an alternative to french fries. French fries are short, stubby, overcooked and horrid. (For excellent fries, go to Absinthe a few doors down). The avocado grapefruit salad was disappointing: 3 small grapefruit sections and 4 mandarin orange sections (both with no flavor and appeared to come from a can/jar) on crisp endive with a half avocado drenched in an oily dressing lacking zing. Overall, overpriced and mediocre.

I’m used to SF restaurant prices, and know things cost even more right now, but the tiny portion of fish they serve for the price tag is absolutely unreasonable. Even worse was the preparation. It was so dry that no amount of sauce could rectify it.

Hayes Street Grill is very pleasant, with polite and attentive service and a nicely varied menu & wine list. My salad was very tasty, my oysters main perfectly cooked, the cole slaw side featured an imaginative & tasty hint of horseradish. The Grill really deserves 3-1/2 stars but noone offers that scoring option. I reserve four stars for venues with exceptionally imaginative dishes featuring outstanding ingredients. Fice stars? Only four restaurants on Earth have earned that score from me. While the Grill doesn't reach that level, it WAS a very nice dining experience; I would certainly dine there again.

Hayes Street Grill has been a model of consistency for many years. You will always get an excellent meal there. I think it is the simplicity of their approach which keeps them relevant. The food is always fresh and of high quality with very little pretension. The french fries are still among the best in the city.

I felt a bit rushed so by the time I had finished eating my main my dessert came almost immediately and I had very little time to enjoy my main. They were not very busy (me and one or two other tables) and I saw them change the sign to closed while I was eating. But I had booked early enough for me to have plenty of time before the closed. The food was nice though although I was surprised by the bill at the end - all the extra bits added made it more expensive than I had planned for.

We have been dining at the Hayes St grill since it opened in the 80's. We bring visitors, take SF folks we are visiting because we expect the very best sauces, fish, and creme brulee. We were taken back a bit with quality of cuisine: the bread (extra cost) was so crusty we could not break pieces of it open, the salad was forgotten till after the entrees (though they comped us for that), the entrees were of a diminished size (for instance the swordfish -usually 3/4 inch thick was only a quarter inch thick), the beurre blanc texture was as usual but that special flavor we expected, wasn't there. Despite these fixable issues, we will be back when in town, especially since the creme brulee remains (in our opinion)the best in the world!!

AS always HSG provides a very enjoyable dining experience. The food, the service and freshness of the seafood is exemplary. One note however, is that the closeness of the tables resulted in being "bumped" three times by the service staff as they passed through the aisle. This should be improved.
