Hayes Street Grill
The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.
Four of us enjoyed a terrific meal before a play. The fish dishes were delicious, the cocktails well made and the service was outstanding. Will be back,
The food was absolutely delicious! I took a couple of first timers with me and Hayes Street Grill did not disappoint.
Fish is the specialty here and they know how to cook it just right. Very tasty sides as well. The staff have been here for years and are real pros at providing great service. Always a treat!
This is a standard that never disappoints.
It is a little pricey (halibut was $33) but the food was very good. I substituted the braised greens for the French fries and was happy that this low carbohydrate option was available
Have been coming here, on and off, for over 20 years. It hasn't changed. Fresh fish, perfectly prepared, year after year. Quiet, efficient, friendly service. Not a trendy spot, which to me is a very good thing.
Perfect for pre-show dining. Right in the middle of the theater district. Service is always friendly and swift. Food never disappoints. Unexpectedly some of the best fries in the city. Conversations are always audible. Checks come less than two minutes after requesting to get you on to your performance just steps away.
Very fresh, well prepared fish. Good service. Place is crowded and old. Needs some freshening up.
Always a great time at Hayes Street Grill! We never had a bad meal there, service is excellent and I love the ambiance. You actually can hear each other when talking!
I was surprised that the menu was more limited than what was online. I expected there to be more meat options as indicated by the name “Grill”. Mainly fish options. I ordered a hamburger. It was sent back as it was still too rare for my liking. And the bun wasn’t the best for a rare burger. The hamburger meat didn’t have much flavor either. The fries were good. The service was great. Didn’t order any drinks but the bar looked great and I’m sure would be excellent.
Good food in good, convenient location. Reasonable prices given the area. Good & helpful service
Went to the HSG EARLY (at 5:30) after a 3:00 matinee on a Sunday afternoon. It was nearly empty, which was a first for me, as it's usually packed. I tried a new (to me) fish with the server's suggested lemon/caper sauce. It was ok, but I won't be ordering it again. Not the kitchen's fault, just not my fave. The fries, though, were amazingly good! My friend had grilled shrimp on a salad of different greens that was delicious. Since it was nearly empty, I would have thought we'd have received a bit more of the server's attention. I was never asked how I liked this new type of fish or his recommended sauce, for example. We weren't asked about our meals at all and had to get the server's attention to refresh our drinks from the bar. I believe that the place was really just opening up and not everyone was at 100% go yet, and that's fine. I have been here many times when everything worked like clockwork, so I have no problem with one 4-instead-of-5 star meal! I'll be back!
What an amazing meal. Ever dish, every bite was perfect.
The food was delicious. There was a mix up on my order, but I think it was more about me not being clear about what I wanted. Our server was more than gracious about it and compt our starter. It's a great place to come for food that is always well prepared and good service
Good food and friendly, helpful staff
Pre-symphony dinner— delicious Caprese-inspired salad with grilled Tuscan bread, grilled salmon with a light beurre blanc, scallops cooked to perfection— all served with a smile and in record time. They have the pre-show routine down! Would go back anytime, show or not!
Food and drinks were excellent. My friend and I shared three dishes, we were served the service dish and only one extra plate, had to ask for a second extra plate. Waiter complied with request that we be served a dessert with a birthday candle. We were charge a $4 "cover charge".
The best sand dabs , ambiance, and service in town. I always dine there before the symphony and that makes a magical evening!
Dinner before the Theater! Simple menu but excellent food. Stall was personable and pleasant.
Delicious food and fantastic service! Can also accommodate large parties.
Very enjoyable dinner after a lovely afternoon at Davies Symphony Hall.
Why is this place 1/2 empty on a Saturday night? Our food was spectacular. One of the best Cesar salads I've ever had...and I've had a lot. Perfectly prepared salmon. Plenty of good-to-great options on the wine list. Desert was the sweet end-note we wanted. The service was attentive without being obnoxious. In short, a perfect restaurant. Maybe we all just took HSG for granted all these years? What with 100+ new "must try" places opening (and closing) every year, and there is HSG a stalwart, totally dependable and ready to take your rez before an evening at the symphony or any other time. Go, seriously. You won't regret it.
Some visits are better than others. This visit was just ok. The salad was ok...a little heavy on the dressing. The salmon didn't taste noteworthy...possibly frozen fish. Greens were great.
But in past service was spot on great. And good was spot on also. Maybe was just an off day.
My family has been going to Hayes Street Grill since it opened.
My husband and I came to dinner with my parents.
Now we bring our grandchildren.
We have celebrated many important events
as well as popped in to Hayes Street Grill for dinner
before a concert or a lecture.
Hayes Street Grill is truly my favorite restaurant.
The restaurant was so charming. It was a smaller type of restaurant but the matched its adorable personality. The host was very pleasant seating us. Unfortunately, they were all out of Halibut by 7pm, but the other options were incredible. There was a small language barrier for the person taking the order but we figured it out and he was very helpful and nice. The food was absolutely amazing. Prepared perfectly. And the french fries oh wow. I wanted only a couple. Needless today I was licking the dish as were the other guests. The sauces with the fish were not even necessary, but added to the taste beautifully. I would definitely be back.
A wonderful institution for our family. Go there as much as we can.
Excellent service and very nice wait staff. Had a reservation and were seated right away. Some of the best french fries in SF, so we definitely indulged. They’re known for seafood and the halibut didn’t disappoint. Salad was great and the pecan sundae was a great way to end it.
Hayes Street Grill never disappoint. The grilled salmon with cilantro lime salsa was excellent! My husband had the grilled halibut with beurre blanc. He loved it! The mushroom celery soup was outstanding!
Service was very efficient!
Wonderful Civic Center area restaurant! Very much a theatre/artsy vibe; delicious food; and great service. everything works together to make a fabulous dining experience. Whether we are going to the opera, symphony, ballet, play, or event, this is always our first choice for dining in the Civic Center area.
We were celebrating my niece’s birthday with dinner before seeing ‘Hamilton.’ Perfectly cooked fish, excellent service, as always.
it’s always nice, but my food was subpar. my sister had a good steak. service was great!
The food is just not worth it. Will not be returning. $32 for dry, very boring fish. Expected a lot better.
Sunday evening dinner, when no concerts happening. Not crowded and quiet...it was great
Outstanding service! Food was fresh and delicious and served promptly since we were headed to the opera after dinner. We will return soon! Thank you!!!
Pre-opera meal. Know how to get you in and out on time. Both the salmon and halibut were a touch undercooked. Grill marks on salmon but no crispy outer side. Both fish dishes tasted pouched. A bit wet and tasteless. Side veggies kale and chard were over cooked and mushy.
The beet salad with walnuts, radishes, chopped salad and blue cheese was very good. With one glass of wine and iced tea and our bill before tip was over $100. Not a good value but still a busy popular place. Service was attentive.
straight forward excellent food
outstanding simple fish dises
We ordered the smoked trout appetizer was delicious, very tasty served as a dip. We both ordered different grilled fish with the famous French fries on the side. Fish was not over cooked and very moist. The waiter was most attentive and was well versed on the menu items.
Lovely old style restaurant. We would return!
Overall good, but the soft shelled crab was overcooked.
We have enjoyed the food and ambiance at Hays Street for over 25 years. Consistent and enjoyable.
