   My wife and I came for dinner to celebrate my birthday. The table staff were very friendly and helpful. We both had the roasted scallops to start - very nice, with 500ml Pouilly Fume. For mains we ordered the flat iron fillet (medium rare) and the boneless sirloin (medium) with some sides and chips, accompanied by the Hawksmoor Malbec. The fillet was overdone and sent back. It was replaced with a piece of meat that was so sinewy it was difficult to believe it was fillet. Our main waitress, Carolyn, was very apologetic and agreed it was a poor cut of meat so took it off the bill. My sirloin was over seasoned but enjoyable. Throughout the meal it was difficult to talk across our table because the whole place was very noisy. At the end of the meal, Carolyn brought me a small birthday treat - chocolates and a glass of dessert wine - a nice touch, but the overall experience was spoilt by the very poor quality of my wife's meal.

   Sadly this trip to Hawksmoor was disappointing. The starters were good, the prawn cocktail massively overpriced for what it was though. We ordered the mixed grill and surf and turf. The mixed grill was black and dry. We asked for the steak to be cooked medium to well and sadly every item was. The waitress offered to make some more lamb chops but they took so long that by the time there were ready everyone had finished the sides and I my main meal. Lobster was overcooked on the surf and turf too. That said they knocked the price off for the mixed grill and gave us a drink on the house and one dessert, we appreciated this. I will be going back and hoping this experience was a one off as this is normally one of my favourite restaurants.

   It’s a very nice restaurant however it was surprising how casually dressed the waiting staff were…. Not what I would have expected for a place with the reputation it has. Also the service was exceptionally slow. I’m not sure that it lived upto the hype especially when the food and wine is this expensive.

   Things seemed to have changed over the past couple of years. Portion size of the sides was minuscule and had gotten noticeably smaller since we last visited in November. It’s always been expensive, but when you’re talking £6.50 for 4 leaves of little gem lettuce (disguised as a Caesar salad - something I would strongly disagree with), and £16 for a tiny glass of house white wine, it’s getting to another level. Service was good and very friendly. However, when ordering, I didn’t get asked if I wanted to add a sauce to the steak (something I’d forgot about) so when it arrived it was just the steak on a plate, no garnish or even butter. I couldn’t get the attention of the server to get a sauce so had to eat it dry. It’s only a small thing but when the main is this expensive, you’d expect the server to anticipate you might want a sauce and to ask. Overall it was fine, we enjoyed it for what it was but felt it was extremely expensive, I doubt I would return again given the shrinking portion sizes and ever increasing cost.

   Arrived on time to then wait 15mins to be shown to the table wasn’t a good start, fortunately the rest of the evening certainly made up for it. Great food, definitely would visit again when in Manchester

   Food was perfect, service was amazing lovely attentive staff. Only reason I wouldn't give 5 starts is the price, i just couldn't see that price in that food. The steak was lovely and cooked to perfection, I just thought slightly over priced.
