Hawker Fare- SF
HOLY MOUNTAIN is a craft cocktail bar and lounge above Hawker Fare.
Wednesday - Saturday
6:30pm - 1am
We had the blistered string beans to start; these were the best things we ordered. We also had the FRANGRANT “CHICKEN & RICE” (sic), ISAAN BBQ CHICKEN, and the RED CURRY RICE VERMICELLI NOODLES. The first two dishes were disappointingly similar and disappointingly bland. The curry dish was tasty but somewhat difficult to eat. They were out of the Lao beer and did not have the whole fish dish. Maybe going on a Monday didn't give them a chance to restock from the weekend. One of us ordered a fancy drink that came in a Moai-shaped glass. It was pretty strong but good. We might go to this place again to try some different dishes, but because it's so loud, it won't be a regular stop for us.
We loved the red curry tofu (ordered rice on the side) and the chicken and rice! Having lived in Asia for about a decade, i can say this food was authentic and delicious! We were there on a Sunday evening and service wasn’t that attentive, but it may be better during a busier time. Would recommend!
Unique food and awesome cocktails.
Looooove this place. It's a neighborhood staple :-D
Food is off the chart delicious, all fresh and exciting mix of flavors. The hard surfaces make for a lot of loud ambient noise. However, it’s worth putting up with the audible strain to eat such unique meals to n a fun atmosphere.
Small portions, over priced, nice design, need more desserts
Really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. I'd certainly recommend
This is a great spot for groups. The cocktails and food are awesome but the service is always lacking. Need more servers!
The food rocks. Green beans, fish in banana leaf, parang curry, sticky rice. Better than you’ve ever had. Except, well, if you’ve eaten them in Asia. Casual atmosphere but food so good it makes a great date.
I’m not a foodie but this place was recommended to us by a “foodie”.
Great food! Reasonable prices! Impeccable service!
Great food. Easy going vibe. Beware the Zombi Cocktail!!!
Good food and service, almost too loud to hear my girlfriend from the other side of the table for 2 though. Went on a Saturday at 730pm
Appetizers are amazing but main dishes are weak compared to the appetiers!
Great food in a fun atmosphere. Drinks are tasty and creative. Great for a group because there are so many great dishes to try. Can't believe I loved the tofu curry. I don't eat tofu. Thank you HF.
Delicious food, good service, food arrived promptly. Our group of 6 was happy.
Great place for a birthday celebration! Great food! Amazing drinks! There isn't a bad thing on the menu!
Our server pretty much disappeared for our entire meal after she took the initial order. The worst service I've had in YEARS. Great food, great drinks, BAD SERVICE.
The food was really good! We chose a range of dishes to share between the four of us and they were all tasty and well balanced. The service was quick and efficient and as a European where we're accustomed to less 'intrusion' from the waiting staff asking how things are going, it was a perfect balance.
It was lovely! V hip but also a versatile vibe
Nice vibe. Good decor. Way too noisy for us; I had a headache by the time we left.
Our dishes: relied primarily on sugar and salt, regardless of all the exotic seasonings listed on menu. $6 for a bowl of peanuts with no recognizable flavor other than salt?? Close $100 for two, including 2 beers; no cocktails.
Unlikely to return.
Food came out fast, but hard to get servers attention. They forgot 1 of our orders which sucked but they ended up bringing it out after a couple of reminders. Food was good -- definitely catered more towards American taste.
Lao food is so rare in the US that you have to treat it as a novelty and, that said, that’s exactly what we did.
The restaurant is unpretentious, casual and a bit edgy. Very noisy, but when we were there, it was not the sort of noise where it was impossible to hear your dining partner (as it can be at some other “hip” SF places).
We tried four dishes, the long bean salad, the short ribs, catfish stew, and tamarind noodles. We loved the noodles, liked the catfish and beef, and could have done without the beans. I have no doubt that, given the background of the owner, the dishes were authentic, but authentic doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing as pleasing, which the beans definitely were not.
The noodles, however, were great, and we cheerfully slurped then up.
All in all, an interesting and pleasant experience, and we WOULD recommend it for others, but for us it’s just a one-off. Glad we went once to try it, but we prefer other cuisines.
Amazing food and cocktails!
Really good but chilly spices missing. I guess pandering to the American palette. We got some fresh cut chillies on the side and mixed them in. Did the job.
And yes I have been to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
So thrilled to find out they are serving food from Laos. We’ve traveled there twice and can say that the food at Hawker Fare is definitely on par it’s what we ate in Laos. So delicious. And different from Thai food. Give it a try. There were lots of happy eaters there. And the atmosphere is like a trip to South East Asia.
Awesome, we shared food and everything was great!
Asian street food prepared for white people that pay too much. Over cooked and bland.
Fresh ingredients and well-prepared (although not spicy enough for my taste) Thai dishes. The room is loud and lively. Perfect for a large group looking for a quick and satisfying meal.
Underwhelming food and drinks.
Great street food from Laos. Fresh and spicy. Interesting and a bit of noisy.
They were out of a few of the dishes and beers, service was friendly but erratic - everything else was great.
It wasn't a busy night at all with lots of empty tables but the service was inattentive. Nobody followed up, asked how things were, offered to get more drinks or said goodbye as we left (only 2 other tables seated when at the time of our departure).
The food is good but wasn’t special. I’ve had better Lao dishes elsewhere, and for much less.
Great food and great variety of dishes
Had a fun birthday dinner with a group of friends! No problem making a res and seating half the group. Fun drinks and good food! Service was adequate
We were a party of 5 seated at a table at the end of the bar. The food was really excellent, especially the shrimp with penang curry. Our only complaint is the noise level. We managed to hold a conversation without yelling at one another; however, it was definitely well beyond what we prefer. On the other hand, he food was so good that we will be back.
Pros: Excellent food and service.
Cons: Extremely uncomfortable chairs. Restaurant is extremely loud, which sort of ruined the dining experience. Please add some noise-reduction panelling.
Hawker Fare rates highly because it has a lively atmosphere, yet conversations are possible. The food is unusual, tasty and impressively presented. That said, it really is not a place for a person who cannot eat spicy dishes. However, they are careful to have four dishes that anyone, including a 6 year old, could handle and they were delicious. Because of its fiery nature. one dish was rated inedible, even by the three diners at the table who always can eat hot food. The seating in the restaurant is by and large not comfortable because of the metal folding chairs. Even so, their brilliant red color contributed to the restaurant's overall visual ambiance -- festive and cheerful.
Fun, lively atmosphere...male host was not very pleasant, but all good otherwise...
