About

Hawk was the venerable meeting place where both sides of our brain got together, politically. Since 1969 the arguments ebbed & flowed, and eventually everyone just moved on to drinking and laughing together. The quintessential American "dive bar". The next chapter was a ground up 15 month renovation under new owners in 2013. 45 years later, we honor the tradition of the original ethos and, even late at night, "dive" to that legacy. Yet we think that the Hawk is ready to move on from "69... make our own mark...honor the past...make it ours. The menu looks to our heritage, and celebrates it with Real Food. Our food comes from farms and ranches that do it old school, like Mother Nature intended. We serve free range birds from Fredricksburg, as well as hormone and antibiotic free beef from Creekstone Farms. Great ingredients like Duroc Pork allow us serve up true American Pub fare that satisfies without the fuss. Luncheon, Supper and Live Bluegrass Brunch on Sunday.

Love the food - better than "bar food". Quality of Crab cakes was as good as any 5 star restaurant! Fun vibe. Could have used more wait staff and bartenders, but those that were there gave excellent service. Great upstairs bar space for groups to watch anything together on TV.

Food was quite good--burgers especially--but service was rather slow. The restaurant seemed somewhat understaffed, which in retrospect probably relates to the holiday period. Even with the restaurant half-full, it wasn't easy to carry on conversations due to the noise level. But we enjoyed our lunch. I had not been there for many years, so it was a pleasure to see that the Hawk still exists!

Thank you hawk n dove and open table for communicating and notifying costumers of a private party taking place the same night we made the reservation. We walked in at our agreed time and oh surprise, we were turned away. Unacceptable!

For any that remember the old Hawk n' Dove with its seedy appearance and aroma of stale beer, the wonderful ambiance of the remodeled restaurant never fails to please. Groups are definitely welcome, and the menu is wide and varied enough that most will be able to find something appealing. Too, the prices are reasonable, so the Hawk n' Dove is well worth a spot on the lunchtime rotation.

We enjoyed our meals very much. The service was also very good. The kale salad with salmon is really delicious. The Sunday brunch is great too. The coffee is really good. Nice time enjoyed by all. Great location to the Folger's Shakespeare theatre.

Our waiter was good and friendly (not to mention, cute!). The noise was so loud I'd definitely pick this place for drinks instead of dinner. That being said, the chicken sandwich was so-so, the fries were good, overall not bad for the price. However, their sodas are limited to Pepsi / Sierra Mist / Root Beer, so if you're not doing alcohol I'd go elsewhere.

Love H&D. Was heartbroken when it closed, elated when I heard it reopened. They did some much needed renovations and the place is barely recognizable.

The service was okay -- but the food needed some work. Due to their location and large seating area, they are ideal for eating. The food is fair (and that might be a stretch). Strongly suggests an overall with the food.

The buffalo wings was great, not wet like a lot of places that makes the wet with dripping sauces. However we ordered dry rub wings and they gave us basically fried wings. Not dry rubbed. The service wasn't spectacular, but not great.

Group stopped in on way to a DC United game and had a great time. Bar program features some very good cocktails including barrel aged cocktails and very good selection of beer and wines. Wide variety of food for every taste and all was well prepared and tasty. Server was fantastic and made the meal.

My boyfriend and I took my parents here for brunch on a Sunday. 3 of us did the omelet & waffle bar, while my mom ordered food. The brunch bar wasn't very expansive - they kept waffles in the server pickup window and toppings for the waffles at the omelet station. You walk up - grab a waffle and top it with whatever you'd like. If you want an omelet, you choose your toppings at the omelet station and the cook makes your omelet fresh. It takes 5-7 minutes. They also provide potatoes, sausage and bacon for the brunch bar. Our food was great.. but our service was spotty. The waiter was very slow and didn't come back to check on us very often. The restaurant was pretty dead, so it wasn't that he was busy.

I'd definitely comeback, I'd love to see how it is for lunch or dinner. I loved the look of the restaurant and from what I could see the beer list looked good and rather affordable for DC.

I had always wanted to go to Hawk n' Dove, so was excited to bring my brother as he came in town to attend the Cherry Blossom Festival. For one of the busiest weekends in DC, Hawk n' Dove surprisingly had many seats available and we were quickly seated.

After that, things went downhill fast. Water was refilled only twice. Coffees weren't refilled at all. Food arrived cold (steak and eggs for my brother, and pork scramble for me), and incorrect (bacon on my wife's vegetarian dish).

Strangely, about 30-minutes into our stay, a tremendous bang was heard on the second floor- similar to a gunshot, but certainly an explosion of some sort. The entire restaurant fell silent and families looked scared. Employees looked around in panic, but the sound was never resolved or addressed by staff. A polite apology would have put people back at ease.

This restaurant is poorly managed, and it took an exceedingly long time to get the check due to understaffed and overworked waiters. In all, our small one-course brunch took an hour and forty-five minutes to complete. That's inexcusable.

I keep hoping that one of the 4 tavern-like restaurants in this Capitol Hill centered restaurant group will suddenly have amazing food but every time I give them another shot they still come up average. Hawk n Dove is certainly more appealing with the fancy chandeliers and raised bar area, but the food comes up as mediocre as that at Molly Malone's, Lola's & Boxcar. The menu has a little more to offer and the fries were really great but the rest was nothing to jump up and down about. The service was slow even though the restaurant wasn't packed. For casual dining on the hill it doesn't get better than Ted's Bulletin - I wish Mr. Cervera would take a page from their book. It's nice to have a pretty restaurant but it doesn't get you anywhere if the food isn't spectacular.

The food is quite ordinary. I thought that the reopened H&D would have a more ambitious menu. At least that's what I thought when I looked on their website. But it's basically bar food - a beer, a burger and the like; that's about it. If that's all you want, it's fine. But don't expect too much.

Service started out fine but went downhill quickly when another big table showed up. I didn't think it would overwhelm our waiter, but it did. Someone else had to jump in.

My fish entree was exceptional and the choice of a local craft beer always works for me. I don';t know why we don't come here more often. With the cold weather, we found the cold air coming in through the unprotected front door made the room cold. We were sitting in the middle of the restaurant.

We had a quick pre-theater meal at Hawk & Dove. The noise was deafening upstairs and downstairs, but the burger, fries and salads were good. The wine was ok. The beer selection was very good. And we were done in 45 minutes, in time for the show at the Folger. If you like noise and beer and decent food on Capitol Hill, this will work for you.

We had an early Sunday brunch here before going to Eastern Market. We were early for the DC crowd, unfortunately we were also earlier than the bartender - so no Bloody Mary's for us. The food was good, but we just had the French Toast - it was average. The service was good and it was nice dining outside. Its a cute area and pretty convenient to the Capitol South metro stop.

Just a "meh" experience. Slow waitstaff even with very few people there. Manager and waitress confused each other so our drinks weren't on the bill. When I alerted them, I expected maybe they would provide a little discount on the drinks as a reward for being honest, bit nope. Food was boring and burger was over cooked.

We decided to try the revamped Hawk n' Dove for brunch because some of the more popular spots on 8th St SE and in Eastern Market were all booked up. It was super quiet at 10:30 a.m. when we arrived. The interior is nicely updated from the old version of the bar and the menu features a lot of standard brunch options. The food was good and service was friendly and attentive. It's a nice option for a weekend brunch.

We went there for mothers day brunch. No problems, nothing special. I ordered an eggwhite omelet and fruit, and that is exactly what I got. It was fine, but it looked like and tasted like I made it myself. Nothing memorable. Ditto my wife's three cheese eggs and my son's french toast. Also, the cost for three entrees, 1 coffee, 1 orange juice, 1 side of toast -- $56 before tip. Service was great. It was stellar to be outside on a gorgeous Sunday. That was worth the price of admission. The food wasn't.

What a great surprise to brunch @ Hawk n Dove resurrected: we'll definitely return.
Excellent service and a menu that even pleased my vegan pal! A creative execution of corned beef hash from scratch was impossible to pass up w St Pat's on the horizon -- it was a rare indulgence & delicious! And the plates at nearby tables were appealing in presentation and soon after left clean.
IMHO, the number & volume of TVs was a bit excessive, but, we can embrace diverse "worship" on Sunday afternoons ;-)
