An Excellent presentations for a true Japanese culinary experience just as
if you were in Japan.
We bring the taste of Japan to you!
We waited 45 minutes to be seated, even though there were several empty tables. Then once seated, no service for another 30 minutes. We left and I don’t think they even noticed. There was only 1 server for the entire restaurant and she was suffering so we didn’t fuss. We were told they are closing soon and it seems like they have given up already.
We waited for 15 minutes for anyone on the staff to even acknowledge that we were at the hostess desk, rather than just walking by without saying a word. The party ahead of us eventually gave up. The several parties behind us were discussing doing the same.
They let us wait 20 minutes past our reservation time. And then told us that they could not take us. Offered a corner table and told us we would have to wait that 30 people get served before taking our order.
We loved the food here and I was hoping to have a final taste before they close. Too bad.
Reservation was not appeared in restaurant’s portal upon arrival. The service was slow.
Excellent fresh sashimi ...as usual.
Hatcho is consistently high quality.
Amazing hostess and chef!! Wonderful group dining experience.
The sushi was fresh and a great presentation. It was an authentic family owned business. We enjoyed our dinner.
Consistency amazing fresh food...
I dined with my family including two kids under 11 yrs old. We did have to wait a little longer than we are used to at other venues. However good things come to those who wait - the food was delicious, the soup the sashimi, tempura, sushi rolls. We had a very filling and pleasant dinner. I highly recommend.
very limited wine choices- only had Chardonnay as a white wine. Service was very slow. We were there for 30 minutes before they took our order. Food was good though, and the location is close to Santa Clara Mission.
Feeling nostalgic so on a whim, went back to check out the restaurant; last time we were there was 8 yrs ago after my child graduated frm SCU; remembered food was pretty good and pricing was very reasonable; however, this time around, meal combos were so-so; service was still ok; not a lot of diners on a saturday at 7pm so was kinda nice where it wasn't crowded or loud; all in all, very disappointed.
It's been 20 years since the last time i visited this place, the food and service are still exceptional everything is beyond my expectations, if you're looking for traditional Japanese cuisine around the bay area this is the place, we'll be back soon.
Friendly, family run restaurant with excellent food served. Service could be more friendly, but the owner couple is taking care of the guests like a mum.
The light was so bright our eyes hurt after dinner, which ruined our experience. Otherwise the meal was beautiful, the people so nice, an authentic experience.
Hacho was amazing. The most traditional Japanese restaurant I have been to in the year I've spent in the Bay Area.
We enjoyed the calm Tatami room and authentic food with genuine service from the owner and staff. Felt as if we were in someone's home for a real Japanese dinner. Sake selection is not found elsewhere and ours was excellent.
My BF found this place a few months back and we’ve been here at least once a month now. The food is delicious, fish is fresh and overall value of the price paid is just right. This is our new favorite place. We usually get the hatcho gozen which is like a bento 🍱, just right for the tummy!
Best hand made sushi in many years. Family owned restaurant near santa Clara University. Lots of signs saying "we can only move so fast..." so if you are in a super hurry, you will miss one of the best meals in Silicon Valley. The Salmon sashimi was excellent. So were the ebi, unagi and spicy tuna. And the dragon rolls. I was sad they didn't have any coffee mochi balls left, but the green tea, the mango, the vanilla nad chocolate were all good.
I made a reservation for 4 people at 6:30pm for last Friday and were pleasantly seated right away.
It's a quaint, modest-sized restaurant with no frills and no fuss; just the way I like it. Don't get dissuaded by the oft-mentioned "slowness" of their service as mentioned on Yelp. This is a small business run and operated by two people and only a few people on their waitstaff. If you think you're so important that you demand fast service, then sorry Felicia, this is not the place for you. The wait, in my opinion, is far worth it especially given the quality and flavor of the dishes they make. To begin, I always believed that if a restaurant can't get the basics right, they shouldn't be making food at all. as an example: I may have had one of the best-tasting miso soups at Hatcho: simple, savory and hits the spot just right. Their Premium Sushi Gozen was just simply divine. I typically use a soy sauce dip to "enhance" flavors in the nigiri, however their rice is well-seasoned that I didn't need anything at all ( except for of course the picked ginger in between to cleanse the palate between the different types of fish).
If you desire a low-key spot, quality Japanese food - not just sushi (which they do very very well), AND you want to savor every piece of rice - you will not leave this place disappointed.
I will be coming back again soon, Thank you Hatcho for a lovely dining experience.
Excellent authentic japanese food, but need to wait a little longer for food to come to the table. Waited 20-30 minutes for example, as it was crowded.
Since I read reviews, I was prepared for service to be relatively slow. I made reservations online and got tatami table for 7. We were seated within 5 minutes but waited 5-10 min for drink orders and longer for our food orders to be taken. Appetizers come out first then most of the cooked items. It seems the sushi and sashimi takes the longest and rest of us were finished eating by the time those who ordered sushi and sashimi came out. Food was good enough, not sure if most spectacular, guess it depends on what you get. The rice that came with sashimi had too much rice vinegar and my husband did not like the sauce on his potato croquettes and wished it was on the side. I had nabeyaki udon which was good but probably hard to mess up. Nice place to try but not somewhere I would frequent much at least not for those that like sushi/ sashimi - need more staff to provide better service. it’s worth trying if you are not in a rush. We came on a Friday night at 6:30 pm and left around 8:30 pm.
The food was all good. The service is slow and sushi took forever. They excused the speed based on them being a family restaurant. If they cannot make sushi in a reasonable timeframe, take it off the menu and focus on what they can do. There are lots of family restaurants that can work out how to have reasonable service.
Nice hostess and waitress, excellent authentic Japanese sashimi and sushi
Love this place as it serves traditional Japanese food. The interior is dated but It feels like visiting family.
The owners and the staff at the restaurant are so friendly. I took my Grandma and Fiance to their restaurant for dinner. I had been there a few times now, and it never fail me.. both the food and services!
Salmon was not fresh, shrimp tempura was undercooked, squashes and potatoes were raw. Only the California Roll and miso soup were okay. Place is dirty and old. Pretty sad experience. Don’t know why it’s so highly rated here as other sites list them as 3 out of 5.
The service was absolutely abysmal. We made reservations and were ignored for 10 minutes along with two other parties. After being seated, another 15 minute wait. The food was adequate. Chicken Kara age was over cooked and dry. Sushi rice fell apart from being too wet. Other dishes were good in flavor. If it were possible to give a negative rating for service this restaurant deserved it. They have a sign that says if we’re half full you may have to wait. And the restaurant was less than half full. Why don’t they hire more staff??
My favorite casual Japanese restaurant.
Cost performance is good.
Authentic Japanese food prepared by an experienced Japanese chef.
Very disappointing food, unpalatable and lukewarm hot dishes
As usual... excellent food, high quality ingredients
Decent neighborhood Japanese joint. Be prepared for a long wait to get seated/orders taken. Once they take your order food shows up pretty quickly. Potato croquettes and uni hand roll were the highlights. The dinner set is a great value.
It is a small family owned shop that make quality and delicious food. Sashimi and sukiyaki were by far the best dishes that I had. Service was slow but our group was understandable and were quite friendly.
Super slow service. Rice was soggy. We went two hours before a concert and had to beg for our check at the end so we could leave.
Try the beef with potato appetizer. Outstanding!
I also had the burger Japanese style topped with egg. Also delicious.
The only downside of a family business is that you never know when you will be seated.
But once seated, you will never regret it: fantastic Japanese dishes in various combinations, select range of specials depending on market, generous portions on sushis and sashimis...
And Linda's smile!
The food was OK.
However, the service was really bad.
We arrived at the restaurant at 6:45, with an reservation.
We got our seat at around 7:15
They served water at around 7:30 with menu offered.
Took the order at around 7:50 (had to ask a couple of times)
Food was served at round 8:20
Had to ask for check for multiple times.
Left the restaurant at around 9:50
I knew the service is slow in this place, but didn't expect it to be this slow...
Foods are awesome. Much less expensive than New York. One downside is that it took very long to have foods and to have check ready. Japanese stuffs were very good. Other stuffs were unfortunately far below the level of what we call “good” or acceptable. Hope they could hire more Japanese stuffs so that they can provide much better service.
Excellent food quality and preparation.
Fantastic Business Meal. The food is so authentic, it makes me long for another trip to Tokyo. Excellent.
