Harvest - Wisconsin Ratings and Reviews
Excellent meal served by a well trained staff. We were a large party and were seated away from the main dining area per my request because one of our party has a hard time hearing. The food was excellent. Suggestions were right on and we could not have enjoyed the meal more.
Arrived at 730, early enough that you shouldn't be out of things. Ordered a bottle of wine and it wasnt available. Ordered scallops and you were out. The cheese platter arrived without it customized as we asked and for three people there were only 5 slices of toasted bread. I ordered pork and it literally came plain, no sauce, and was barely luke warm.
We went to Harvest on the recommendation of a friend before a concert at the Overture. Our waiter, Max, was very lively and helpful and we put together a wonderful meal of small plates and one entree. Just an overall amazing experience. Food was fresh, ambience a little noisy with close tables but no real problem as far as I am concerned.
We will return again and again.
The food was outstanding from start to finish. The Market Rissoto was a great combination of flavors, made perfectly. We were impressed by the food and wine knowledge of the waiter. I had the Door County Cherry Drop and it is now my new favorite. Service was terrific. We will definitely be back.
Oh how I wanted to reap the benefits of the Harvest once again. I had made reservations way in advance and still was seated so far back in the restaurant near the kitchen and bathrooms! Then to be near the air conditioning, asked to be seated somewhere else, which they were accommodating, only to be seated further back yet! Service for us seemed to have been forgotten and we were feeling left out in the mist of things being right by the kitchen. Rarely did I see staff smile and look like they were happy doing what they were doing, quite depressing. We will not be back, I'm sorry.
I've never been disappointed with the food at Harvest. As other reviewers have noted, portions are small, especially by midwest standards, but I consider that a positive! Food was excellent again on this visit with the halibut entree being outstanding. All dishes tasted fresh and well prepared, and thankfully come as described on the menu and with only sufficient ingredients to bring out the best of the flavors. No smothering in unknown sauces here ....
The wine list is consistently excellent at Harvest too, with by far the best range of half bottles in town. These half bottles are generally very good quality, pair well with the flavors of the food and are reasonably priced. Kudos to Harvest for taking this unusual and appreciated step for wine lovers.
The only down side was service that was below their usual standards. We were left waiting at the entrance as the greeter had disappeared. One of the dishes we ordered never appeared and when coffee was served, no spoons or cream were brought. Any one of these would have been forgivable, but to have all three in one evening, at a place that contends for one of the best restaurants in Madison was a surprise.
Food was excellent but service was horrible. For example it took 10 minutes for someone to approach table after seating and it was not busy. Then another 10 to get ordered drinks. Water. Bread. Dessert was even slower. Dessertcame out which we finished and then coffee. . I'm guessing front of the house and back don't communicate. Also guessing our waitress was new. Clearly she forgot about us because she never did the seasoned wait staff fly by to check on us. Food was excellent but unlikely to recommend due to how front of the house didn't seem to care about guests.
My overall impression of Harvest was that it was "okay". My halibut was "okay"...a bit overcooked leaving it bordering on dry and too salty (this coming from someone who is often accused of over salting her food). My son's steak was also "okay"...nothing to write home about. They no longer had the wine I ordered but rather than coming back to the table and informing me of that and allowing me to chose another the waiter returned with a completely different varietal than the one I ordered. I felt pressure to accept his chosen alternative and although it was quite good, I should not have been placed in that situation. It is a very small and narrow restaurant and luckily I was seated by the window with a view of the capitol which is it's only saving grace as far as ambience is concerned. Sorry...it was a lot of money to spend for "okay".
Another great dining experience!! I get to Madison every few years and always make it a point to eat here. The food and wine are fantastic, and the service is attentive yet comfortable. They accommodated my request to combine a couple of the entree options and the server had a great wine recommendation to match it. So pleased to have enjoyed another great meal at Harvest!
We recently had a very enjoyable meal at Harvest. Our server was knowledgeable of the menu and was able to guide us in the right direction. I ordered the house made pasta and it was delicious! Husband had the halibut which he liked very much. Apps and desserts were also good.
Harvest is a very restaurant with a locally sourced menu and a decent wine list. It is a rather small place but it doesn't feel crowded and doesn't get too noisy.
it is a nice place to have a business dinner whether among colleagues or with clients. It is a bit upscale without being pretentious.
I recommend this place for dinner on the Capital square in Madison
Harvest was excellent. The food was amazing with my only complaint being that my wife's steak was underdone....very rare instead of medium like she ordered. Albeit she could have and should have sent it back. Our server was incredible although I cannot remember his name. he was very knowledgeable and excite for the menu and the wine list. The cuisine was creative with seasonal items (I had the salmon) and the wine list was eclectic and very very fairly priced compared to 95% of other restaurants. Would certainly go back when I am in Madison and highly recommend the experience!
The food and drinks were very good. The ambiance of the "back room" is... bad. It feels like you are in a banquet hall or party room. It's doesn't feel like you are a part of the rest of the restaurant. I'm sure we would have enjoyed it more had we been sitting in the main dining room.
